I think it's actually the heated airer... it's on 24/7 from October - late April... the stream of clothes that need drying is endless though. ENDLESS. It doesn't make sense, I'm convinced we wash more clothes than can possibly be being worn.

What I pay is going up 40% soon also.
Compare the Market didn't help much this time.

I use a washing line whenever possible now. Apparently you save 60p each time.

I had to do a switch even to get just a 40% increase - my old supplier was wanting to double it!

My house is well insulated but that’s half the issue for clothes in winter. Can’t put them outside because it’s too cold/wet, but if I have the central heating on for more than a couple of hours the house gets too hot, so so can’t dry stuff on radiators either. So the heated aired is the only option and I think it probably costs a fortune. Like £50/month :umm2:.
electricity has increased massively over the last few years. I used to blaze out the old 60w and 100w lightbulbs all over the house without a thought. Now i have led lighting everywhere and my electric is still 3 times the cost of my gas

Lighting is cheap as chips these days (with the 5 to 10w bulbs), like £10/year if you had a main light on 24/7. In my house it's things like desktop PC, Playstation, TV, other electronics constantly on charge (although things like laptops and phones don't use all that much usually) and the dreaded heated airer. Plus the washing machine itself tbf which runs like 2x a day :umm2:. We've also had massive industrial-sized fans running all summer.

I keep going with small suppliers, and they keep going bust, and they keep getting transferred to ****ing EDF. I was with EDF before I started switching to small suppliers! They tried to tell me my annual Gas & Electricity combined estimate was £4000+ a year, for a family of 4 in a semi-detached  and set my direct debit as something like £370 a month! I don't want to be with bloody EDF! :fist: Why are they forcing me to always go back.

You're quite right to be honest, we need a good clearout as half of the youngest's stuff doesn't even fit her very well at this point. The local recycling centre just got those big metal deposit bins for clothes to go to charity so I might convince my wife we should bag a load of stuff up and just jam it all in those.

If you want turkey, then my advice would be to buy one or two of Icelands frozen turkey joints. Then you can freeze it until Christmas and just in case the scare mongering is true, you'll have turkey for Christmas.
I've had one of their turkey joints and they're fairly good, you can get one that's wrapped in bacon.
Personaly, I'd have a good Christmas day if it was just spaghetti hoops on toast for dinner, as long as I can get pi55ed.

the business model of the failed companies was to assume that the price of gas would always fall, and to tempt other companies customers away by offering prices that reflected a falling gas price trend. It's hardly a surprise that they go out of business when there is a price cap to protect consumers and they were selling their gas for cheaper than they bought it. It's a very blinkered business model and was bound to fail as soon as their was a gas price rise. Consumers will be able to switch to another supplier so its no big deal, no matter how much the media try and panic everyone
Tibb should sell itself to the national grid, the money we could make with all this gas, imagine.

They are predicting that gas prices are going to go through the roof next year. Who is on a fixed price plan or who is going to join one now? I signed up for one last week with no exit fees, so if the price comes down I can always exit the plan and go for a cheaper option.

Really concerning.
Not for myself, I'm able to absorb more costs even though I find them sickening.
All it is now, is bills up and then up again and again.
For those, even in work, who find these extra costs crippling.
My heart goes out to them all.
Sadly, it's termed necessary and apparently our government can do nothing or WON'T do anything about it.
So we are really up the creek without a paddle.

Russia basically control the price. We get next to no gas from them, but they drive the market and so heavily influence the price. They want europe to take russian gas from their new pipeline and are controlling the price to try and force countries to take their gas and get it cheaper.
Also, our drive for the environment actually means that we will be using more gas until we get greener options on line, so we are ****ed from every angle

I was lucky enough to have my previous plan expire literally 2 weeks before all of this began and got on a 12 month fixed at that point... however, it's with a small company so they might just end up busting . That said I've been with a bust company before and the company that took over honoured any fixed plans that were in place.
Thankfull we use **** all in terms of gas, like £40 a month and that's with a gas cooker (both hob and oven, and we cook frequently). If they really do go through the roof, will probably swap out for an all electric cooker, or at least an electric oven/gas hob combo, which would probably at least half our usage if not more.
Electricity also went up significantly between my last fixed term and this one though. Exaceerbated, I've realised, but us using a tonne more electricity during lockdowns 1 & 2 than normal so their estimates of our usage are way off. We had 3 desktop PC's running all day, plus my youngest was in a phase where playing in the shower was a guaranteed way to keep her amused and calm, so there were multiple days per week that she was in there for literally 2 - 3 hours (electric shower) :joker:

1) it isn't cheaper, per-unit prices are literally always higher.
2) the prices (how much energy you get per £1 on your card) are still dictated by the market.
The only benefit of a pay-as-you-go meter is that you have no unexpected bills, and can control your spend.

so we use up lesser gas than before, now just for the heater i think
but yeah it is kinda a gas crisis here in my nation, mostly for farmers who grow their crop in greenhouses and require gas for power in those (and we got very large greenhouses here)
so prices on tomatoes, lettuce, other veg can go up this winter they fear
and drilling for more gas, well lol not a option either because of moaning people in Groningen due to dangers of earthquakes there from the drilling

Energy bills will rise to reflect soaring wholesale energy prices, the energy regulator has warned.
A price cap limits the impact of rising energy costs for customers, but Ofgem said this would increase.
Chief executive Jonathan Brearley said the cap was "designed to reflect fair costs and therefore will need to adjust over time".
Nine UK energy suppliers collapsed last month and Mr Brearley said more could follow.
"Given the continued volatility in the market, it is likely more suppliers will exit the market," he told a conference organised by Energy UK.
Natural gas prices are at record highs as economies around the world begin to recover from the Covid crisis.
As a result, firms are running into trouble because they have agreed to sell gas at less than the price it now costs them to buy it.
More than 1.7 million customers saw their energy provider go bust in September.
They have already seen annual bill increases of hundreds of pounds when they moved to a new provider and away from whichever low-rate fixed deal their supplier had offered.
Ofgem's advice to those affected is that they should wait for the regulator to appoint a new supplier and refrain from switching in the meantime.
It says customers can rely on their energy supply as normal.
The warning from Ofgem's Mr Brearley came after analysts Cornwall Insight predicted that household energy bills could rise by hundreds of pounds next year.
They said the energy price cap, which works by limiting how much firms can charge domestic customers for a unit of gas, could soar by £400 in the spring to about £1,660.
That is about 30% higher than the record £1,277 level for the cap set for winter 2021-22, which began at the start of October.
"With wholesale gas and electricity prices continuing to reach new records, successive supplier exits during September 2021 and a new level for the default tariff cap, the Great British energy market remains on edge for fresh volatility and further consolidation," said Craig Lowrey, senior consultant at Cornwall Insight.

If you're still on a fixed tariff there's no need to submit a reading until the tariff ends (the time to do it would be the day before the tariff ends). The change in capped price doesn't affect you until your tariff ends (so you go to variable rate; i.e. the capped rate) or you switch to a new fixed tariff (there are currently none worth taking).

If they can let energy rise by this amount...they will do the same with food
Its a scandalous rise, on the plus side they will reach net zero quickly as no one will be turning on their heating or driving :skull:

This is just the April rise - it's rising by another chunk in October.
unless the market calms significantly, and thats unlikely, the price jump in october could be double the rise today. Next winter could be dire. I think i may get a wood burner in

The October cap is already announced... it'll be that amount, no lower (and can't be higher). The real worry is when THAT cap expires, if the government doesn't announce a new cap or an extension of that cap. Because if it's uncapped... ... ... well all bets are off. I don't think that's a likely scenario as it would get to the point where energy is literally unaffordable for most households, which would make political intervention inevitable.

I mentioned in another thread, currently very jealous of my sister for still having an open fire (and contacts who can sell wood on the cheap).
i have woods at the back of my house that go on for about a 10 min walk, so not even cutting anything down, there is a massive supply right there

Yeah my sister lives in the middle of nowhere, and also it's an island, so there's driftwood and stuff everywhere as well. But she also knows loggers, and the logging companies only haul off the nice big cut-to-length trunks, which leaves behind absolutely LOADS of "scrap" logs, and the loggers will collect them up and deliver for a small fee. Probably not supposed to technically but they're not going anywhere otherwise .
In fact, if you have any logging nearby I reckon you could just rock up on a day when they're not working or to an area they've stripped and moved on from, and fill your boots with abandonned logs.
Maybe those ‘preppers’ were right after all ...
They just weren’t sure what they were preparing for ..

There is going to be a real crisis in October. Finding the elderly and babies frozen in their beds will become the norm next winter. Crime will go through the roof but no doubt blamed on Ukrainian refugees.
Until now this country has never known real hardship, that's going to change.

People will be going back to heating just one room
I remember as a child the walk from the sitting room to the bedroom in winter used to be baltic and the sheets were like ice when you got into bed and there used to be frost patterns on the windows when we woke up :bawling:

We keep the bedrooms colder anyway (I can't sleep when it's too hot and kids seem to have inherited this trait) ... it's more the summer that's an issue - we run massive fans in the bedrooms constantly (for this same reason). The kids room gets RIDICULOUSLY hot on summer evenings. We were thinking about getting an aircon unit this summer. Probably not the best idea now :umm2:.
