[Sad news: Emilia Clarke will not be reprising
her role as Daenerys Targaryen.
As the show is set centuries before
the events of GOT, her character doesn't
make sense to be in the plot]

Thought the first ep was very good. I hope they keep the focus reasonably narrow based mainly on the two sides of the Targaryen conflict. Thrones became a beast they couldn't control a bit with the multitude of storylines which they couldn't wrap up neatly
Yeah I enjoyed that first episode.. not as gripping as the first GoT first episode but that was special .

no spoilers but apparently the ''high septon'' actor is 87 yr old Gary Raymond whom had actually retired his career in 2017, but he was convinced by producers here to say yes to this role and make a mini-comeback of his career
basically most famous from The Rat Patrol and from playing in films alongside stars like Charlton Heston, Sophia Loren, as well as having starred in another film with Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Mercedes McCambridge
and also
Raymond worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1950s, playing roles such as Macbeth, Oberon and Claudius, and others. He made his film debut as Charles Stuart (King Charles II) in the British swashbuckling film The Moonraker (1958).

The books were doing better with all the story lines I think, they were able to flesh them out better. I refuse to read anymore of GRRM books though because of him not finishing A Song of Ice & Fire series so I don't know how much of this series is based on books?
Really enjoyed the first 2 episodes, pretty gruesome though also
From Ep 2
That scene with the king walking with that little Valarian girl talking about being married and her giving him Heirs was pretty vile

Yeah (even though she's only supposed to be 15 or something?) But she at least looks more like a woman, that other little girl looked around 8 years old (though they said she was 12)

That's part of the world that GRRM built, and part of our own history. You could see his shock and slight revulsion which redeemed it a bit.

Still really gross though. And a lot was to do with despite them saying she was 12 she looked even younger, i thought she was around 8 years old

Of course, but it is obviously a realm-defining decision to choose one girl/house over the other, so I think they had to provide the background, and at least provide some context as to why he made that choice, when he ultimately makes the "wrong" decision for himself and the realm.

Show has made a great start and brings back all the old pre-season 7 memories of how good it used to be. I hope they end up rotating producers/runners so this one won't be beholden to the ambition any runners have to destroy star wars.
Niamh.
31-08-2022, 12:45 PM
I think he made that decision not only because she was young but also because he clearly wants to be married to Alicent more because of her father making sure she acts like she's interested in him. If that wasn't the case he may have decided on the younger girl who would benefit him more

I know Rhaenyra is 15 but don't know if they've said what Alicents age is, thought she might be a bit older
I'm not really sure what to make of Alicent atm, I'm guessing her father has been pretty awful torwards her in the past but I'm not sure if she has genuine affection for the King or was just doing what she was told and I don't know if she realised what her fathers plan was or not. Only 2 eps in I know but hopefully they'll flesh her character out a bit soon

She seems extremely nervous and seems to genuinely care for Rhaenyra, I don't think she's interested in the King, just doing what her dad tells her, he seems like a sneaky rat

I thought it was good to get to know the characters a bit more and where their heads are at. Alicent seems genuinely nice, as does Viserys but he's not a strong leader.
I was annoyed the Crab feeder was just killed off screen like that too, was all a bit anti-climatic

Rhaenyra wasn't wrong about Otto Hightower, i mean he had full intention of marrying of his daughter to the king, in hopes of her to give birth to a boy to be an heir, meaning his blood potentially on the iron throne
Daemon's Wife, well she's too clever to be just some random *****, i mean she has spies in the streets, almost similar to Varys in GoT for example, i wonder who she really is, what family she is from?
I'm really enjoying it so far.
Although I'm not getting all the Daemon hype (not the character but all the people on social media drooling over him) he looks like a kneecap

GOTs would have been good all the way to the end if they hadn't rushed it, the ending would have been fine if they took more time showing Dany losing her mind and getting to the "burn them all" point. I think the books would have finished it all a lot better especially if GRRM hadn't given up writing them :oh:

For Danys story to really get to her end point it could have done with that many seasons tbh Book Dany (did you read the books?) imo was already further along to her turning evil but all the characters were able to be fleshed out much better in the books. There was plenty of material and viewer demand as well to have 13 seasons, seems like a stupid move not to make that many. So many popular TV Shows drag it out and end up ruining the show but this would have been one example where it would have really did it the justice it deserved

Exactly, it didn't make any sense. (sorry for banging on about the books but....) She had started to lose herself a bit more in the books so i didn't find it as bad from having read them but if you had just been watching the show it would have made very little sense for her character to turn like that, they tried to make what should have been years and years of lots of stuff happening to her into Missandei being killed by Cersei causing such a massive personality change

I assumed that when Daemon had the conversation with Laener's b/f about going to live in the narrow sea where people didn't mind you being gay, he was selling a life where him and Laener could go be an open couple?
I thought at first Daemon was killing him so that Qarl could get there unguarded and then Qarl and Laenor came up with the plan between themselves to use that guy as the body but seems I'm alone in that thinking!
It seems strange that no one questioned if the body was Laenor though, how would it be burnt beyond recognition in the short time it took people to arrive from the kid going to alert them
it's funny how this is basically mirroring the first season of GoT
btw, this episode is ****ing brilliant
Weird how the one eyed kid now looks by far the oldest of all the youngsters
I liked Alicent in this episode, it is true that she's spent basically her whole adult life caring for the sick King and she's also obviously been governing pretty effectively the last few years. I'm glad she didn't have that young girl killed or jailed as well, thought that's what she was going to do for a minute It's a shame both her sons are awful.

The last episode was the first time the aging felt really off for me. I don't know why they didn't have younger actors for Criston and Daemon at the start, also the "old" actors for Rhaenyra and Alicent now look too young for their kids.

There's only a years difference between Olivia Cooke (Alicent) and Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon) in real life :skull:

Yeah that's true although I think the main problem is the kids have aged too quickly. Isn't Aegon only supposed to be like 18 and his younger brother 14/15 or have there been more time skips than that. The one eyed guy looks about 30.
when they changed 2 of the cast a couple of weeks ago it threw me off completely, but now it washes over me, i'm more interested in the actual events which i'm really enjoying

It is a pity they couldn’t somehow ‘age’ that first blonde actress.. she is so watchable / captivating for some reason ..

why is that obvious, isn't Aegon a direct ancestor of Daenerys?

which Aegon though? Rhaenyra also has a son called Aegon

so maybe Viserys thought he was talking to Rhaenyra and not Alicent on his death bed, talking about ''the prince who was promised'' so making Alicent's Aegon king is all based on a big misunderstanding i think

Yeah, that's what I think anyway, I seriously doubt that
Alicents gross son is "the prince that was promised"
Alicent's redemption arc last 2 episodes

I've checked the pilot out.
I like Daemon's character, he actually feels like he wouldn't go amiss in GOT.
Tbh I'm not sure on the rest of it so far, it felt like it was Upstairs, Downstairs with a violent element added in to make it look cooler.
But I'll give it another chance tomorrow.

As regards Daemon - he’s probably my favourite character to be honest

I can see a lot of potential in him as a character, I also really liked the scene between him and his Brother towards the end of the episode after Daemon was being reprimanded over mocking the death of his Brother's Wife & Son.
My main issue that I'm hoping will be fixed in later episodes is a bit more of that GOT grit, rather than feeling like I'm watching a borderline Soap Opera.
But I definitely agree with you on Daemon.

Tbf I'm still early in the Season, so I'm hoping that this problem will be fixed in the next few episodes.
Why is it that every male character in the Show is an unlikable jackass? I get that the Show is going full on feminist, but can't they do that whilst also making at least one guy likeable? And don't get me wrong Daemon is entertaining, but again he isn't meant to exactly be a decent Human Being.
It's the opposite issue to early Seasons of TWD which liked to make the women be pathetic.

I've got faith that it'll turnaround for me on that particular issue.
Because at the moment that is my biggest issue with the programme.
