The celebrations of the Coronation are an expression of all these harmless
hopes. The ceremony itself is, as a matter of fact, only a small part of what
will make us happy on Coronation Day. The real cause for rejoicing is that,
despite all our problems in Britain, we live in a reasonably prosperous,
reasonably peaceful society.

If you sometimes feel depressed about the state of the nation, imagine being
an American, who will likely have to choose between a dodderer and an old
crook at their next presidential election. Imagine being in Putin’s Russia, or
Macron’s faction-torn France. Think of the countries of the Middle East; think
of Sudan.

The British have much to be thankful for. Without quite spelling out what
those things are, they will be mysteriously expressed, not only by the
Coronation ceremonies we watch on our tellies, but in the street parties,
family get-togethers and jolly noises coming from pubs. Vivat! Vivat!

If there were a referendum tomorrow I guarantee you the Monarchy would stay, replacing it with a President would just be silly.... no one does pomp and ceremony like the Brits and the people who travelled in numbers to sand in the rain confirms that

The UK's annual income from tourism is in the region of £50 billion and it's probably reasonable to say that maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of that could be lost (at a MASSIVE stretch) without an active monarchy, so it's value is maybe about £15 billion. It's a good little chunk but I wouldn't say its unfathomable?

A referendum with voluntary turnout yes. A referendum where by law every adult had to be polled - I thi k you'd probably get about 30%.

Speculation of course, they'll never poll it in any meaningful way. The most we'll get is "x% of Daily Mail readers say..." and we'll.... No ****, DM readers are crown humpers

It's because there's no compelling vision for a republic that captures the imagination the way monarchy does. The only thing republicans are really for is elevating politicians to higher status and everyone hates politicians more than royals so...

Republicanism had its day when monarchies were actively political and repressing people. That doesn't happen anymore so honestly the only thing they've got to complain about now is a £1 a year cost to each taxpayer

I think the Future Monarchy with William and Kate as King and Queen is keeping up the momentum.
When you watch the Ceremonies......the pomp and Pagentry that comes with our Royal Family its what makes this country stand out from all others. Its what draws in the Tourism that brings in Millions each year. No other country does it better and if we didn't have a Royal family we would not be putting on a performance like we do for a 'President'.

Spot on! :clap1:

Prince Harry wore custom Dior for King Charles' coronation.

The Duke of Sussex arrived at the ceremony at Westminster Abbey on Saturday (06.05.23) in a three-piece suit designed by Dior Men’s artistic director Kim Jones.

Dior shared a picture of Harry on Twitter and wrote: "Tailoring fit for royalty. Dior is honored to have dressed Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, for the coronation of King Charles III in a custom design by Kim Jones. Seen arriving at Westminster Abbey, gain an insight into the savoir-faire of his three-piece suit next."

Dior also posted on Instagram: "For the coronation of King Charles III in London, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, was attired in a formal Dior look specially designed by @MrKimJones for the momentous occasion. I think William will strip the Coronation back even further. I don't think he'll want as much fanfare plus sadly I don't think his will be as momentous, today has been so hyped as its been 70 years since the last. If William's is in 10 years or so everyone will remember this. The only saving grace is the Wales popularity so that will save it somewhat

The Prince and Princess of Wales have released a touching video commemorating the Coronation of King Charles III.

In the glossy video, just over a minute long, Prince William and Kate Middleton can be seen with Prince Louis, their youngest son, and Princess Charlotte. Their eldest son, Prince George, does not appear until the family are seen in their carriage between Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.

The video is captioned: "What. A. Day. Thank you to everyone who made it happen

Just two days earlier, she was cradling a pint in the Dog and Duck and taking a trip on the Tube.

She may not have been the one being crowned at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, but as she dazzled the crowds in a stunning ivory Alexander McQueen gown, the Princess of Wales once again proved herself to be the queen of royal style.

Her intricate silk crepe dress featuring silver bullion and thread work embroidery in the shape of patriotic roses, thistles, daffodils and shamrocks naturally invited comparisons to her wedding day in 2011 - when she wore the same designer at the same venue.

But it was the Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece that really set the mother-of-three apart from the rest of the congregation.

Made with silver bullion, crystal and silver threadwork in three-dimensional embroidery, the beautiful piece was part headpiece, part floral garland.

Pinned across a meticulously styled updo, the 40-year-old future queen could not have looked more regal if she tried.

Teamed with the three-strand George VI festoon necklace, a favourite of Queen Elizabeth II, and the late Princess Diana’s diamond and pearl-drop earrings, her entire look paid tribute not only to the King’s love of nature but also her late mother-in-law’s unparalleled ability to wow a crowd.

It not only felt right that Diana should be represented at the ceremony with the jewellery gestures - but that she should be represented by her newly minted namesake.

Camilla may have been crowned Queen - but this was Kate’s opportunity to shine as the next in line.

Having been made a Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order by the late Queen in 2019, Kate is entitled to wear the impressive royal blue and red striped Grand Cross Mantles of the Royal Victorian Order - and did so with aplomb.

Made from dark blue silk satin, the grand floor-length cloak is edged with scarlet and lined with white silk taffeta, with a hand embroidered badge and hood attached to the right shoulder.

The cape could not have been a more fitting adornment for a woman widely regarded as being the saviour of the House of Windsor.

With the popularity of the monarchy waning among the under 30s, Kate and her three children Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, eight and Prince Louis, five, are playing a pivotal role in shoring up support.

The Duke of Sussex depicted her as cold and unfeeling in his autobiography Spare by including anecdotes about how she bristled at the idea of Meghan hugging her, borrowing her lip gloss and discussing her pregnancy hormones.

Describing his sister-in-law as put “on edge” after realising she “was now going to be compared to, and forced to compete with, Meghan”, Harry appeared to mock Kate for being “dressed to the nines” for a family dinner whereas his wife was “barefoot” and wearing “ripped jeans”.

Yet with the Duchess conspicuous by her absence from the two-hour ceremony, and Harry relegated to a third-row view obscured by the Princess Royal’s feathered hat, Kate’s “formality” appears to be serving her comparatively well.

Now the second most senior woman in the Royal family and also one of the most popular, the criticisms made from Montecito have done nothing to dent her approval rating which stands at 65 per cent, according to the latest YouGov polling, more than double that of Harry on 29 per cent and Meghan on 23 per cent.

Moreover, in effortlessly combining a sense of majesty with a generous helping of maternalism at these major royal occasions, Kate is fast emerging as paladin for working parenthood.

As with her ability to fuse high street and haute couture when it comes to her wardrobe, the Princess is deftly pioneering a new approach to royal life that has put motherhood at the forefront of her work.

Previous royal generations were brought up on the nursery floor but family-orientated Kate has decided to do things differently by playing a hands-on role not only in her children’s upbringing but their imagery and appearances at state occasions.

By regularly providing the media the intimate images from the Royal family photo album, the Princess has succeeded in killing the market for paparazzi shots of her children stone dead - thereby shielding her children from the instruction that William and Harry faced.

Gone are the days of Kate simply acting as the heir to the throne’s plus one. As we saw with yet another power performance at the Coronation, when it comes to capturing the hearts and minds of the public, it’s the Princess of Wales who truly wears the crown.

Kate is beautiful inside and out, she really is the Jewel in the Crown.
Her Mum and sister Pippa looked stunning too, they are such a lovely family.

Tbf can't elderly women have been slags when they were younger?

Tbf just like men in general can be slags as well, even if it's not really common to use the term against men, we can still behave like a slag if we so wish.

It was a great day by everyone involved and for all those who wanted to and did really enjoy it.

I'm not going to snipe at anyone involved, I will also say it's right for those against the monarchy to have the chance to say their piece.

I thought the ceremony was great and I myself felt privileged to be able to se a Coronation.
From a service that goes back in our History for centuries.

I equally thought it really appropriate and good that both King Charles 111 sons were present for it.
Immaterial of where anyone sat.
The main people yesterday were the new King and Queen.
Who seemed to sail through the whole event.

The children were incredible, it was a long ordeal to sit through.
I understand only Charles was at his Mother's Coronation and not for much of it either.
Being only 4.

The planning and unfolding of the build up to and the ceremony itself was uplifting.

I wish the new King and Queen all the very best in their reign.
There may be much harder roads for the Monarchy in the future.
Yesterday was not one of those roads.
It showed Britain at its best as to these occasions.

I'm sure ALL who attended were welcomed by the king and Queen and ALL played their part in the event.
Whether they had any kind of role in it or not.
I found it both enjoyable and inspiring.
Congratulations to all who organised it.

£15 billion is still a lot more than the monarchy costs, so it sounds like there's little to no reason to abolish them after all :)

Im not really bothered about the coronation although I did have it on for the kids as it's history for them, from what I saw it was a spectacular event even the rain didn't spoil, i do think its just mean spirited when some delight in hoping it was a failure and the names Camilla is called is imo childish and nasty,we do not know any of the circumstances of their lives, only what we have been fed,I liked Diana a lot,but she has passed ,time to move on,she isnt coming back, maybe some feel she should be queen, but she isn't, from what I have heard and seen of Camilla she is a kind person and obviously loves Charles and him her,so let them just get on with their lives without all the unwarranted comments etc from people/press etc.No need for anyone to go out to purposely spoil the day, those same people will be happy with the bank holiday given.

The Duke of Sussex has returned to California after catching a British Airways flight within hours of his father's Coronation service.

Prince Harry arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at around 7.30pm local time (3.30am BST) to reunite with his son Prince Archie on his birthday.

British Airways flight attendants confirmed to the PA news agency that Harry had been on the flight but said they were not permitted to discuss his trip.

The Duke, 38, had always planned a swift turnaround, his priority being to support his father during the historic ceremony.

Beyond that, he was determined to make it back to the family home in Montecito in order to kiss his son goodnight on his fourth birthday - May 6.

As they chatted ahead of the service, Jack Brooksbank, husband of Princess Eugenie, appeared to be asking Harry about his return plans.

“About quarter to four,” the Duke told him, according to lip readers.

After processing out of Westminster Abbey alongside his family, he was driven off and made a quick vehicle change before heading straight to the airport.

The Duke stayed in the UK for under 36 hours, having arrived at Heathrow on a commercial American Airlines flight from Los Angeles on Friday morning, according to reports.

The Royal Family deliberately shielded Prince Harry behind Princess Anne's hat in a calculated move, a royal commentator has told Express.co.uk.

The Duke of Sussex played a background role on Saturday as his father and stepmother were crowned King and Queen.

He arrived at Westminster Abbey behind Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, taking a seat in the third row next to Jack Brooksbank, with Prince Andrew a few seats to his right.

Anne, Princess Royal was wearing a feathered hat which looked as though it was obstructing the Duke of Sussex's view - and spared him from the gaze of eagle-eyed fans watching live on TV.

Royal commentator Hilary Fordwich told Express.co.uk this was a deliberate ploy.

She said: "Harry struggling to see anything looking around Princess Anne's hat, not an accident as the royals don't make missteps. They covered Harry so the cameras could not see his face."

Ms Fordwich also commented on the fact that Meghan Markle was absent from the ceremony as she stayed in California to look after son Archie on his fourth birthday, referencing royal history as she described it as a "great pity"

everything is planned with military precision, they take account of what people will be wearing, camera angles etc. I don't think it would be Charles or Willie making a conscious choice, but a royal staffer would certainly have known

The old Harry would have borrowed a pair of nail scissors and cut the feather down

Even if it’s true that they planned to have Harry blocked by a feather, which I highly doubt is true in any form, do they imagine that would make them look anything other than petty and vindictive?

The amount of stories about Harry and mentions of Meghan are hilarious. The Coronation was about the KING And working Royals, not the Sussex pair. Charles wanted Harry there,he came and looked happy and relaxed sar with other non working royals. He then had no part in the rest of the proceedings as a non working Royal so left to go home and spend time with his son on his birthday. Don't know why the media keep writing stories about him when the focus of the day was the King and working Royals

Had a lovely day yesterday, family and friends round, buffet, Pims... Kids running around in home made crowns. SOOOO glad I didn't spend much time on this thread... What a depressing, dreary coronation day some of you had. Still it rained ... I'm sure it was the one thing that made some of you happy.

They speak for the masses

They speak for the tiny, but noisy, minority.
