I mean I was pleased he brought on Palmer but it should have been after 60 not 81 minutes. !
Also Palmer should have replaced Saka who went missing in the second half not Foden who was at last having a good game after 5 duds
Ultimately Southgate was pressed into making substitutions when we weren’t losing but he still left them ridiculously late and once again he just got lucky

I also saw Messi’s debut …. he was used as a sub initially and I just wanted them to play him all the time .. he was only 16 though.

I will always say that I'm happy with Southgate's achievements with England, and that I would be really happy if he were to lead us at the next World Cup.
However he does have to learn that at the final we have to start attacking the opposition, that's two Euro finals now where we have the better players overall, but let ourselves down by being too defensive.
We're at a final, you can't spend about 80 minutes of the game defending, and only attack for 10 minutes.

But the final was a few steps backwards and not acceptable, because it's the final so you can't hope to fluke a win off of about 2 or 3 clear cut chances, you need to be having at least 5 to 6 good chances to win because the opposition is much more likely to score against you in the final than in any other round of the competition, and Spain did.

Southgate still did better with Boro (which was his first job as Manager) than what Rooney did with 6th Place (at the time of his hiring) Birmingham City (which was his third job as Manager.)
As someone that watched Blues play Football under Rooney, yes it was more entertaining to watch than Southgate's run as England Manager (because it basically was like Football meets NBA) but his tactics were non-existent, that's why I don't agree with you and Girth on that one.

England are a typical example of a team of stars that just don't gel together as a team. They would get more success with 2 or 3 stars and the rest of the team made up of players that can put in a shift doing the pressing and keeping possession.
Southgate said that the team didn't maintain possession, but how could they when pickford booted the ball half way up the pitch on every goal kick. Possession starts and ends from playing out from the back. Everyone knows this
Teams can still keep a hold of the ball better than England were against Spain, even with a keeper booting the ball up the pitch.
Imo our midfield lost us that final, they were barely marking any of the Spanish players when not in possession, and struggled to control the ball or pass the ball when in possession, especially Rice and Mainoo imo.
Who’s involved with deciding Southgate’s successor if he actually goes ( they really want him to stay) ??

I think it might have been a bit different had Southgate included Jack Grealish, it's said the players were unhappy about him not being included and so were several fans and pundits.
I think he doesn't like Grealish.
I remember in the last Euros that he barely played him, and that was with a lot of fans kicking and screaming for him to play.
