On BBC1HD now
luke shaw is apparently fit now
Though not selected
We move Saka out of position to accommodate Foden as right of front 3 ( effectively)
Trippier instead of TAA at RWB is criminal
Why not play Palmer and give Foden a reset given he’s done NOTHING in 4 matches !
Palmer has offered more in his few minutes as substitute !!
Even worse I fear that when the first substitution comes along at 80th minute he will put on Bowen instead of Palmer !
This photo shows Palmer looking thoughtfully at an approaching Southgate talking one on one with Bowen

3-4-2-1
We change to match a system that they have been playing SUCCESSFULLY for years I whilst we have always struggled with 3 at the back !
He hasn’t even picked the best options for the system !
All their players are playing extremely well and they look good to watch whilst only one of our has beenn decent ( he doesn’t play today)
I’m seeing a 3:0 win to the Swiss
Shut the door on your way out, Gareth

We were poor, like we have been all tournament, but we scraped through. However, bar Saka being our saviour, and easily our best player, we look so poor. Spain will destroy us if they overcome the boring wall of France, and we can beat the winner of this game playing now.

Southgate's tactics come from another decade, he takes too long to make subs, and he's relying on his great players to get him out of trouble. Once again they did. That cant last.
He's had 100 games in charge now and we still act like he's some kind of novice and we should just be happy to be in the competition

He's qualified for every tournament they've entered. He's reached the last 4 countries in the World at a World Cup. He reached the last 2 countries in Europe last Euros. And he's reached the last 4 countries in Europe again this time. Still with the opportunity to improve on that position.
He's surpassed any other English manager in history besides Sir Alf who won a tournament. But even he failed to qualify for the 74 World Cup.

The problem is him. He doesn't talk or act like an elite manager. The Kalvin Phillips comment sums up my point.
When you hear Pep talk he is never too far from talking about how to make the team better. Pass better, defend better etc. GS talking about a player who, I'd say, was never a stand out player like he's prime Steven Gerrard tells me GS is not about 'better'. Its all very safe, which is fine in the group stage and the qualifiers, but when you get to the show you've got to put on a show. He's doesnt see this at all and its like he's too scared to go for it.
I could go on and explain further that his loyalty to players like Phillips, Maguire, Henderson etc also makes my point. He's exactly like how I'd expect say Graham Potter to be as England manager and I'm no fan of his.
GS could go on to win this but it wont be down to him, it'll be the players who change things to win a game.
I remember, on here, you were quite disappointed after the Italy final you mentioned. What happened. How did the deep state get to you.

I was disappointed for the way we just went into all out defense at such an early stage of the game, just because we scored early. So on that occasion, his tactics didn't work, and we got beat for it.

You were definitely right about that.
And I know that people will just be happy with the results in the England and France camps, but I do feel sorry for the fans of both teams that traveled to Germany in the hopes of being entertained by their teams, and this is the quality of entertainment that they've put on show for their fans.
Plus Football is meant to be an entertainment product, UEFA should be alarmed at how two really boring teams could possibly meet each other for the final.
I'm happy that England have gone through obviously, but we do need to be more entertaining to watch.

Well we are just doing enough to win games but it’s not exactly enjoyable - it feels like we’re dragging a corpse around !!
I reckon he nailed it !!!
I dread each game now - partly because we are so bad to watch ( bearing in mind by default I just watch teams who are pleasing on the eye like Barca, Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs) - England are turgid at best !
Also there’s the the added stress of wanting him to play the more gifted players like TAA and Palmer plus being desperate for us to win knowing that it will keep Southgate in a job !!
Aghhhh!!!

Tbf Southgate is the only England Manager to consistently get England deep into major competitions, so he does deserve some credit.
And without meaning to single Sven out, but his team did worse with much better players than what Southgate has currently got.
its more luck than something else LOL, also my choice of foreign manager is a good one though, Galtier is a quality manager who also looks more at the team than big name stars (he even benched Messi, Neymar at PSG)
Swiss had bad luck with Akanji's horribly taken penalty (and that plays for Man City can you imagine)
the penalty strategic subs for Switzerland were done properly by Yakin, yet also not giving up on the match to try and finish it in extra time
Swiss played an excellent tournament to get this far to quarter finals

France have played three of the seven highest-ranked countries in world football. The
Swiss, rated 19th in the world, are the highest ranked England have played so far.
Maybe someone should start a thread comparing the two teams/ squads ?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk ProWell here's a team of players that Sven had during his reign.
David Seaman
Gary Neville
Rio Ferdinand
John Terry
Ashley Cole
David Beckham
Steven Gerrard
Paul Scholes
Frank Lampard
Wayne Rooney
Michael Owen
Didn't advance any further than the quater finals.

All big teams struggled against the more organised smaller teams..ie, the Slovs, and the swiss Turks etc
.
The only small team that didnt look well organised was us, unfortunately. Thank god we didnt make it through, cause we would have bored the watching world.
Was a tad drunk last night....but did I really see Ivan Toney, take a blind penalty in a quarter final of a euro championship. Now that itself deserves some ball grabbing.

Well Sven's team had the Destroyer Of Championship Clubs, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes (at points) Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Ashley Cole, and Gary Neville.
Admittedly our goalkeeper situation is much better nowadays.

I'm not saying that Southgate is a perfect Manager (I don't believe that exists anyway) but he is a huge step up on some of the Managers that we've had over the years.
I mean who remembers Steve McClaren's reign?
And Switzerland had at this tournament what we ironically used to do under Sven, decent performances on average that gets knocked out at the Quarters.

Not one French player has scored in open play, where as three England players have (two of them multiple times.)
If France were to win this Euros it would be a laughing stock, as they can't do the most important part of the Sport which is to score goals.

Indeed and people forget that most good managers don't want to manage at international level, they'd much rather be in club football. So the idea that we'd replace Southgate with some managerial genius is for the birds

England are not in the semis because of Safegate
They are there in spite of him
Notice England only start to play football when they go down a goal and then they forget about the "tactics" and rely on their own skills and knowledge of football
We all knew that england had a fantastic squad going into this tournament and it has shown through. Every single player is capable of a game changing moment of brilliance.
They went behind in the last 2 games. Both times, they then forgot entirely about tactic and played for their individual pride and thats why they won. They were never in danger of losing that penalty shoot out yesterday
Southgate has built the culture of players being able to handle the big moments and show resilience when going behind or facing adversity
We are no longer the team of bottlers that we used to be

Didn't seem to do it for the previous golden generation
People can criticise his tactics all they want but there's no denying that the teams mentality is brilliant under Gareth
I think Southgate has created a unique environment for the players compared to previous generations that has helped the team be successful. Maybe his lack of tactical complexity has led to players from different teams finding it easier to play together. The fan base may not like the playing style, but no-one can argue that it hasn't been successful

If we're going back then why not go back to 66. There weren't 20 year old Champions league winners in the last golden generation. There are 6 champions league winners in the current squad. Thats got nothing to do with GS, thats why the mentality is better

International football isn't the same as league football. You're playing against the best 11 players of each country. And they're good players who know how to compete. It's tough.
We have never been close to being one of the best technical sides. English style has never been that way.
Some of the teams you come up against at this level can keep the ball and starve you of possession if you let them have the ball easily. I think that's the thinking behind Southgates tactics. Try and starve your opponents of possession so it lesens the damage they can do to you.
Also, a lot of team's we've come up against so far see England as a big football nation, that alone makes them raise their game and they also get men behind the ball to make it hard for us to break them down.
Maybe a team like Holland (certainly Spain or France) will play more open and give our players a bit more space in behind and we'll see a better spectacle.

I feel mixed on this post.
On one hand I obviously want England to win through any means necessary.
On the other hand if England were to win the Euros this year, then it advertises to teams in all future knockout competitions to play really boring Football that sucks the life out of every game, pass backwards and sideways for possibly 120 minutes.

well idk how to feel regarding tonight
England have had lots of luck on their side this tournament
hoping we will take advantage of any weaknesses within england team, i mean Walker, Foden, Kane are least technical players and Pickford is a mediocre goalkeeper
we should play Malen instead of Bergwijn, Van de Ven instead of Aké
Weghorst will never play in starting 11 because he doesn't want that sort of role, more a pinchhitter/supersub kind of role for him
How many Dutch players would start for England ??
Just 2 … but only one will play tonight as their only world class player FDJ has missed the tournament through injury

if England win, no annoying loud fireworks over here when i go to sleep ;)
if Netherlands win, i think we get a ****load of negative vibes tomorrow on this forum
no matter what results, i think there'll be fights between dutch and english fans in dortmund and we have the majority, 80.000 dutch fans in dortmund
