Anyone else just see the HMs talking about eggs?

Sorry if I am the dumbest person ever but I had no idea that the eggs we eat wouldn't grow into chicks if we hadn't eaten them.

Am I the only person that didn't know that?

They need to be fertilized.

The eggs you buy from the supermarket are not fertilised therefore will not hatch into an chick. It's something like that anyway.

What are you on about? It's got nothing to do with where they come from. I just didn't realise that eggs could still be made if they weren't fertilised or that they would still be layed too. I thought we ate the eggs before they had chance to grow into chicks rather than them not being fertilised at all.

I am sure you are not the only one. I would bet many just would not have the nerve to ask in case some inconsiderate person lashed out with insults.......Never be put off asking a question.

This is not as daft as it sounds, as there have been rare cases where fertilised eggs did slip through, and were successfully hatched.

I think that it's when the egg is born, the mother sits on it so that it warms up, the eggs that we use are taken away before the mother can warm them up and set up a good environment in which they can be born, thus effectively killing the chicken, but you're not really killing it, it's weird.

Most of our eggs tend to come from caged birds, who have never been near a cockerel, so the eggs will not be fertilised. There is no chicken in the egg.

In order for the eggs to be capable of bringing forth a chicken, then the hen will have to be mated with the cockerel before any egg is laid.

For the record I got a CSE Grade one in environmental science which had a heavy element of farming.
