This guy is awesome check out his site for advice about training
http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/
Also you need to take your dog for a health check and vaccinations, they get 2 sets of injections before they are allowed to be walked outside. This is to protect them from distempa, parvo virus and not sure what else!
You can get puppy house training pads now to help them work towards peeing outside.
Lots of love and cuddles is what a dog needs along with firm boundaries and training.

Good sight thanks  So should i let it sleep on my bed and at night? i have a little laudury room AND IT WARM SHOULD I SET A BED THERE FOR THE TIME BEING?
You're best off calling him a two syllable name, ending with ie, or y. They respond best to names like that, e.g Charlie, Sooty, Rosie, etc.

oh ok thanks my mum not tooo happy about a dog as she is a cat lover lol...
ALSO i have 2 cats will it be ok with it? i know my cats will scream but they will get use to the dog right???
LoL we keep cats and dogs together and we do have the occasional problem. But it's normally ok.
I've got a dalmation called Rosie, and once my cat Polly had kittens, and then Rosie started looking after them and then she'd growl whenever the mother cat came anywhere near them. It ended up in a full blown fight. But all in all, we don't have too many problems.
It may take a bit of training your dog to get him completely on board with the cats but it depends what type of dog he/she is.

It a Staff..... i know they have had bad press but i love them....... My older cat does growl at dogs when she in garden and next doors are out.... what if i put them in room together? WITH ME PRESENT.....the dog im getting is only 7weeks old
I think it will take time. Probably after a few months they will be able to behave together without your supervision.
But at the start I'd keep an eye on them and then assess the situation.
They may get on fine, or they may not, but there's no reason why you can't train them to tolerate each other.
But it's hard to tell right now.

I hate dogs, infact I loathe them (pets on a whole) but we have a staff and he is absolutely harmless, really daft, not aggresive in the slightest and rarely barks.
He's not even that smelly either.

I wouldnt get into the habit of letting it sleep on your bed, if you must have it in the bedroom set aside a bed on the floor for it. Even the littlest of dogs take up A LOT of bed, I know from experience!
As for the cats, the puppy will quickly get used to it being there and the pup will quickly realise that the cats are the boss of it lol.
Staffs are lovely dogs, every dog is lovely its owners that are rubbish and let their dogs take control and become aggressive.

thamks guys...i am getting him tommorow now it was meant to be today....but am going tommorow now....
when can i bath him as he is only 7weeks old?
Kate..
02-11-2007, 02:54 PM
i bathed my dog on the first day! i was so happy to finally have one, the more unusual things u do to them at an early age you will get more of an advantage later on
in the first week it's best to train them to sit and come, also take them on a bus and things like that,
for instance, my dog's a complete whimp and everything i try to introduce him to now he refuses to co operate with lol
but he's fine with buses, cars, the street, new people and things like that cause i introduced them to him straight away
good luck with your dog and try not to think of names before u see the dog cause sometimes the name just comes to you

if it has the runs, make sure it gets plenty of drinks and make sure you give it a really good puppy food of the dry variety to try and avoid the runs in the first place.

Staffs are lovely dogs but tend to hate other dogs. Training and proper control is imperative if your cats are to survive.
Where I live Staff have become popular and sadly dangerous incidents have mushroomed. Local Staff owner is currently be prosecuted as his dog attacked another dog and seriously bit two people at the same time.
Two of my dogs in the past have been attacked by out of control staffs so beware make sure you are the master at all times.
Sorry to be negative as I know with my little jack russel I am escaping dangerous situation from staffs on a weekly basis.
Beautifull dogs from a breed point of view but could be a nightmare from a control point of view.
Injections (Also worming) are done every year. Costs me about £35 each year assuming no other problems. If your dog gets seriously sick and you dont have insurance then expect to pay hundreds of pounds in the future.....
Remember train.Train.Train.Control.Control.Control....Is the motto for Staffs in particular...

Any one help me or suggest a name thanks

You can wash his mess off him yes, you dont want him to stink.
Can I suggest that you consider enrolling your puppy into a behaviour course for as soon as he has had his injections. I only suggest this as you seem so unsure about what to do for him. Also I would carry out some research NOW online about looking after a puppy, here are a few links
http://www.pedigreepuppy.co.uk/after_care.htm
http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/kids/kidspuppy.htm
http://www.doglistener.co.uk/puppies/newpuppy.shtml
Read through them to find out how to toilet train, when to bathe (not really appropriate to bath a puppy, just wash its feet etc..) what to feed, how to clean their teeth, how to check their nails etc.. as a responsible pet owner it is really important that you know all of these things so you are equipped to do the very best you can for your dog.

they can my nan said... she fed her dog it.... and he still cooking anyway i read a recipe that egg is good for them BUT NEVER give Raw Milk it is bad for them it says...I mean the Dog food Is not that nice he not eating it
Kate..
04-11-2007, 11:16 AM
Don't worry about him not eating straight away, he will want to explore his new home and he will probably follow someone around a lot for they are feeling vunerable as they have just been taken away from their siblings
A good idea is to give him a corner to let him know its his, that he can always go to
Also put a hot water bottle where he is going to sleep for he will feel secure with the warmth, it will remind him of his mum
Can you post a picture of him!!
Well you aint gonna find the dog food nice are ya haha

URGENT>>>>>>>>>
Not a good start. Like you have been advised. research. To many eggs i have heard can kill a dog.
Train it to eat dog food or you will make a rod for your own back and possibly poison him. Don't give him any milk chocolate which = poison......Dont give him milk. That is for cats.......
Train him at the outset to be obedient at all times. staffs can become dangerous dogs in the wrong hands.
You cannot excape the fact keeping a pet responsibly is not going to be cheap.
Insurance I think will be in the range of abot £10-£12 per month. Insurance does not cover you for visits to the vet for the cost of minor ailments or routine injections....
Kate..
04-11-2007, 12:31 PM
It's true, he must learn to eat his own food.
A lot more things are poisinous to dogs than people think,
Chocolate
bread
Oranges.
you have to be carefull with what you give them and you should make them work for their food if you're going to give them treats, teach him the basic comands, especially stay come and down.

I have one lol
the puppy is the same on as on the left
but i know they look SO different!!
but i do know what i'm talking about lol
but it's the first day, you have to give him a chance, his probably nervous and scared seeing as so much happened in one day, if you dont make a fuss about food, he wont either. My dog is really weird he doesn't gobble down food straight away. He just eats it when there's nothing else to do and he still gets through two bowls a day. Give your dog time.

Like others have said feeding him eggs and human food is not ideal. Dog food is designed to fulfill all your pets nutritional needs, they need different things to us.
If you need to soften his puppy food, or mix in a slight amount of your food for a short while to get him to eat it.
He will be unsettled, he has just left his mum and siblings, it will be a scary time for him and a few days off his food wont hurt him in the very short term.
I have one dog now, I lost my 14 year old dog 3 weeks ago and believe me I know the trials of being a dog owner.
Training and making sure this puppy knows you love it but are it's master from day one are very important.

Someone Please help!!!!!! thanks :conf2::conf2::conf2::colour::colour:
Kate..
05-11-2007, 08:53 PM
Be patient with your dog, he is only a puppy.
It's good that you ignore him at night, dont ever let him sleep in your bed after howling, and you shouldn't let him sleep in your bed anyway so that's good.
You have had your dog for two days, of course he isn't going to be puppy trained yet, just every time you see him peeing inside or about to pick him up and put him outside, praising him when he does it..
These are the signs for about to go toilet
Sniffing around,
Circling where he is about to go
Also they normally go toilet after being asleep and eating so it's best to take him outside straight after this.

That's not to say bread/oranges/chocolates WILL be poisonous however...
So don't worry if you occasionally decide to give your dog a piece of your chocolate biscuit or something.
As for sleeping near your bed, that's fine.
My mum has both of our dogs sleep on small dog beds at either end of the bedroom, unless one of our dogs occasionally decides to sleep in my room.
Though im aware your dog is a puppy, which would usually be a bad idea in regards to sleeping in your room...but if you're near the kitchen then it sounds practical.
Make sure the puppy is tired out by night time, in order to make sure it goes to sleep...
Otherwise you might have problems >_< lol.

Folow SumminAboutKate advice above. Don't train your dog to pee or whatever in the house at all. He should not have a toilet area in the home at all. Allow that now and you will regret it later.
As soon as he starts to toilet in the house pick him up and take him outside. Even if you are aware of it happening in the middle of the night.
You say you prepared his meal if that means you are still giving him human food then please don't.
Although the odd bit of chocolate or bread may do no harm to use either as feeding could harm him or worse.....Advice from a vet. Dark chocolate is the worst never give him that.
Have you registered him with a vet. If not you neeed to do so and at the same time ask for advice from them about feeding. They will also probably supply you with diet linformation litrature.
I know you are excited with your new pet but settle down and find out the proper things to do as of the moment you are doing all that you should not do....
1.Do not allow him anywhere in the house to toilet. You may have a place at night where you don't mind as much but never give him the impression it is ok to mess in the house.
2.Do not feed him any human food. prepared human food may have high salt content. Not good
3.Put him outside to wee etc frequently and reward him after toileting outside.
4.Register him with a vet right away and obtain his advice
5. Cheap insurance=cheap cover and probably high excess fees to pay. For a staff at least £8 a month.....
6.Look for puppy foods and stick to them
7.Treats are the equivalent of junk food so don't let him make a meal of them......Use treats to train him
8. Being a staff which are potentially deadly dogs it is important he is socialised with other dogs.
9. Phone you local authority dog warden and ask where your local dog training is held. getting him to remain friendly with other animals is imperative.

You cant really take him out until he has had his second set of injections and really you shouldnt be mixing him with other dogs just yet.
I would really read through what Bananrama has said and take note.
Try picking him up every half hour and popping him outside to see if he needs to wee, he surely will some of the time and then you get to lavish praise on him and get him to see the benefits of going outside.
Shouting at a puppy is a complete waste of time, they dont know why you are doing it, you need to reward good behaviour and be patient, he is a very young dog who will need to be shown the right thing to do many, many times before he will get it right.

Should be safe to put him in the garden as long as no other dogs are there or have been there recently.
Although he needs to socialise with other dogs don't allow your friends dog near him until it is safe to do so after injections.
Socializing with a friends dog may not be enough by a long shot. Find your local dog training centre when he is allowed the freedom to mix.
I live in an area where staffs have become more poular seems to be some sort of status sympbol with some. However most of them are a menace and danger as they are hostile to other animals in fact deadly to other animals.
I cannot stress hard enough. Socialise him. Train him. Control him or other dog walkers will walk there dogs in fear.....I have even seen a staff still a puppy attack another dog which took two passers by to get him to take his bite off the victim. Then it went on to persue the owner who esacped into a local office building.
In the wrong hands Staffs are deadly in a similar way to pitt bulls.......They fight to the death.....Note... Never leave it alone with a child.....
001steven
08-11-2007, 06:21 PM
All staffs are not dangerous.... i was apeaking to a woamn in the vet and said same thing what you said BUT she said as long as he is taught right from wrong and NOT to rag he will be fine....
No dogs have been in my garden...so is it ok to put him in the garden...what is it been raining as it is now? But Damp?
Sunny_01
09-11-2007, 08:51 AM
As long as no other dogs have been in your garden yes it is ok to put him outside, you want to get him used to going outside for the toilet as soon as possible.
Staffs like any other dog have the "potential" to be dangerous but with good firm training and love and kindness he should turn into a lovely dog.
