Hmmm I wonder if they'll ever do a game where you have to visit the other towns? like, if what's happening to silent hill spreads to the sorrounding towns too.

In other news I think i'm gonna get Origins for the PsP next week but it all depends on how much money i'll have left since i need to buy Sweeney Todd for a media presentation. So hopefully I'll have enough otherwise I might get Pokemon Pearl if it's cheap (So what if it's aimed at kids, They're good games!).

Scarlett.

Its out for the PS2 (0rigins I mean)
In SH you will be in Shepherds Glen which is somewhere a long way up Toluca Lake

Apparently the other people trapped in the foggy world will be seen doing things as you play
(quite a few people seem to be stuck in Foggy world
Including Travis from 0

Cool, the more I hear about Silent hill 5, the more I wanna play it. It'll be interesting to see what Shepherd's Glen is like.

As for 0rigins, I'm gonna get it for PsP I think. I don't really play my Ps2 much anymore so it'd be a better purchase for my PsP. I saw it for pretty cheap in CEX so hopefully i'll be able to get it.

Finally, wasn't Silent hill 4 set in a different town also? I didn't play it as much as the other games but i think the main character's apartment was in a different town.

P.S Great to have you back Chewy!

Scarlett.
22-05-2008, 10:24 PM
Aye Ashfeild is at the far far end of Toluca Lake
and Heathers town from 3 is unknown

ps Thanks!

If I remember right in Silent Hill 3 we never got to silent hill until half way through didn't we? the first part was in that shopping centre. I never finished it but i did quite like Silent Hill 3.

I liked the hauntings and ghosts on silent hill 4 but I wasn't that keen on the game itself.

Scarlett.
22-05-2008, 10:32 PM
Aye
there is an awesome fan fiction writer though who made the game feel 10 times better
http://www.fanfiction.net/u/842888/xeyes

Silent Hill 3 was awesome

3 & 4 are detailing the fall of the Order btw

It is theorised in Homecoming that the surviving members are back

Tom4784
22-05-2008, 10:51 PM
Oh I know that site, I'm a member on it. I haven't been on it for ages though. Here's my homepage, if ya wanna look not much goin on there though apart from an uncomplete E! Nintendo Parody.

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1344398/Skye_phoenix

I'll have to check the person's stories out, they sound quite interesting.

Hmmm, So I guess Alex's brother must have some tie to the order. Maybe their father was a member?

Scarlett.
22-05-2008, 10:53 PM
Alex Shepherd

Mary Sunderland-Shepherd....

I think there is connection to 2
as PH is returning too
its Homecoming time!

Tom4784
22-05-2008, 11:01 PM
Maybe Mary was Alex's sister or perhaps mother? If the ressurection ending in SH2 is canon then perhaps it could be true, when was SH2 and and 5 set? I definately think they are related.

Scarlett.
22-05-2008, 11:06 PM
SH0 was 1976
SH1 was 1983
SH2 was 1994 (May 14th)
SH3 was 2000
SH4 was 2004
SHH will be 2008

I think Mary will be Alexs close cousin

Tom4784
22-05-2008, 11:08 PM
Oh, I thought SH2 was set in the 80's. That blows my ressurection and giving birth to Alex idea out of the window... Unless maybe he isn't completely...human. Hence the homecoming aspect.

Mary being a cousin could definately work. i think without a shadow of a doubt that they are connected somehow.

Scarlett.
22-05-2008, 11:09 PM
Aye true

Also look at this family photo

http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w193/antparker/x3603.jpg

Where is Alex?

Tom4784
22-05-2008, 11:13 PM
True, I might be reading into it too deep but doesn't the mother kinda look like an older version of Mary? maybe she did get ressurected but as a consequence she aged quicker and when she had Alex he gained the aging problem hence making him look older then he is and explaining the homecoming part of the title as Mary was kinda 'reborn' if she was ressurected...In a way you could technically call Silent Hill her new hometown... I'm probably reading into it too deeply...

Scarlett.
22-05-2008, 11:17 PM
No you arent

You can never read too deeply into Silent Hill
I figured out the canon ending of SH2 though subtle hints through the game

Wa(l)ter Sullivan commits suicide?
:P

It kinda does look like her
I wonder what Elle has to do with it all?

Scarlett.
22-05-2008, 11:24 PM
THE THEROY

Water ending has to be the canon

So many parts of the game are associated with water, especially The Blue Creek apartments (Blue coulor of water), water flooding the staircase, puddles all over corridor, you meet Maria beside water, you cross water,
The Lakeview Hotel, it gets flooded, and over all the game just has a wet-damp look, even the Fog looks damper than other games, also the game begins in what looks like a water damaged toilet.

Oh and of course BrookHaven Hospital

P.S I kinda liked the Re-birth ending too

Also
Wa(l)ter Sullivan commited suicide

Tom4784
22-05-2008, 11:24 PM
Hmmm 'water' that's suggesting the 'in water' ending which would explain why Mary isn't with James if the 'Mary is Alex's mother' theory is true, but then how would Mary be ressurected? unless the real ending mixes elements of both endings?

James ressurects Mary, realises that she's not entirely human. He can't get over his guilt and the fact that he has messed with the order of nature and has basically condemmed himself by bringing her back.. he ends up commiting suicide, leaving Mary in Silent Hill. She can't remember this but she wakes up older with fake memories in Shepherd's Glen. When Alex's brother runs away to Silent Hill, she regains her memories and slips into a catatonic state through shock??

Who was Elle again? I can't seem to remember.

James is Alex
afterall he has been a mssing person for over a decade (Douglas was hired to look for him (remember the "Missing person" discussion in the car to Silent Hill) also Supt. Sunderland hasnt seen him

Its possible he ran away with Mary, took her name and changed his first one, Mary could have died and James moved in wither her family

Tom4784

That's a very good theory which makes a lot of sense, but Alex is quite young isn't he? still a good theory, maybe Silent Hill made him younger or something?

I did a comparison between the original Silent Hill's Alchemilla Hospital and the newest incarnation within Homecoming's on another site sometime ago. I didn't see any thread concerning this, so I've thrown my hat into redoing it. And the original post certainly isn't as in-depth as this one is. :D

Please note - the only floor shown on the video is the 2nd. Unfortunately, nothing more than that can be addressed at the moment. Also, with no units of measurement or scale, we have to go purely on visual reference. One last thing: the program I used to screencap the SH5 map, left it stretched for some odd reason. It's not as long/wide as it appears in the screens below. Without further ado.. oh wait. Beyond this line - I'm pointing out rooms and other locations - so possible minor spoilers at any given point (but given the video, I'm 100% certain the 'assumptions' are correct). YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Especially if you're oversensitive about such things.

P.S. - I'm leaving speculation --for the most part -- out. Too little is even known about Alchemilla at this point to really poke fingers (I'd probably just get them cut off).

-

- - -

There are quite a few differences, so evidently the town has been busy (hmm..) in the timespan between Dahlia's failure and Alex's overwhelming despair. Or, Alex simply see's the hospital differently from that plucky Harry Mason. Given the amount of construction, if it's in the real world, I'd be hardpressed to say it's under 3 years between the two events. God only knows on the upper limit of that. You decide on the timeframe, dear reader.

Below are the maps:

Section 1 - Notable Additions

http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6246/sh5additionsnl4.jpg

1. Brand spanking new storage closet that accesses both restrooms.
2. West stairwell that combines the (for all we know...) 3rd floor storeroom and 1st floor conference room.
3. The most notable/obvious addition to Alchemilla: 2nd floor Operation Theatre.
4. Room 207 in the east hall.

Section 2 - Changes in Structure

Silent Hill Alchemilla
http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/9295/shalchemilla2fx9.jpg

1. Room dimensions altered to distribute area evenly.
2. Added doors to both east and west hallways.
3. Intensive care unit dramatically slashed in size to accomodate operation theatre.
4. Rooms 205, 206, 207 are (re)made.
5. Elevator entry and shaft moved to create Room 207.
6. New position of elevator.
7. Areas that will be demo'd and extended to create longer restrooms, storage area, operation theatre, and the accompanying west stairwell.

http://img292.imageshack.us/img292/2608/sh5additionsqr5.jpg

1. The current operating room was formerly the "Operation Prep Room."
2. The "original" Operating Room.
3. Intensive Care room ... just 1/8 it's original size. :D
4. Before being Room 207, this area served as the original elevator and entryway areas.
[/spoiler]

Section 3 - Alex's Journey ... in Pictures

http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/1338/sh5journeyst8.jpg
Where each little splatter is placed happens to be his starting locations relative to the preview vid. Originally, he starts at the Operation Theatre (which is assumed to be the VERY beginning of the game, after the QTE of escaping the gurney), and moves into the corridor just outside of the Operation Room.

The video then cuts forward to the Nurse's Center. He grabs the map, and moves into the west hallway, and proceeds to room 203.

Well, it's been fun posting this, but it's come to it's inglorious end. To those who have enthuisiasm for these tidbits, I thank you for any comments and c&c in advance.

Opening with a short, violent descent into a blood-spattered vision of hospital orderly–staffed hell, this could be only one game — Silent Hill: Homecoming, the fifth in the emotionally disturbing survival-horror series.

“You know Silent Hill,” explains Konami producer William Oertel. “You don’t explain a lot of things. Much of it is very deliberate. You don’t have to go into every single detail. You leave it to the fans to decipher…In a sense, the whole game is like a puzzle.”

Indeed, from its harrowing initial sequence — one that also introduces you to a new button-spamming mechanic you’ll have to employ to escape the restraints of a leather-strapped gurney — things definitely aren’t what they seem. As incredibly reserved protagonist Alex Shepherd, who’s just returning to his hometown from some mysterious form of military service, you feel like nothing is real — and in fact, you’ll be hard pressed to figure out exactly what’s going on even after you’re a few hours into the game. Everything from the trademark quivering, herky-jerky nurses to the empty hospital hallways to the sudden realization that everything up to that point might be a dream (D’oh! spoiler alert!) — it can all be seen as merely some physical manifestation of what may or may not be happening in Shepherd’s mind.

But while the storyline has always been the series’ most riveting bullet-point, Homecoming doesn’t exactly let up on the gameplay. The most notable newness comes in the form of combat — something that in previous games was pretty much relegated to “Smack that dog around with your pipe” or “Shoot the nurse!” This time out, the team at developer Double Helix (a.k.a. The Collective and Shiny merged together) has opted to make things more interesting with your ability to dodge attacks, inflict heavy or light hits, and execute massively brutal finishing moves. Deliciously, each weapon you wield harbors a unique finishing move depending on the enemy you’re facing — in the nurse example, the last blow is particularly grisly, as you plunge a knife into the creature’s chest repeatedly. Psycho.

All in all, combat seems…well, tougher than before. Timing and dodges aren’t common words in most Silent Hill fans’ vocabularies, so you’ll rely heavily on another feature new to the franchise — enemies’ ability to detect sound and light. Running into objects (like an appropriately rusted iron lung in a darkened hospital, perhaps?) shows off the game’s new physics system. Metal objects clatter to the floor, while discarded chairs and other bits knock around. All of them make the kind of noise that’ll set those stumbling bad guys into a frenzied hunt for your sorry hide.

Another mechanic that’s new to the series is the ability for conversations to “branch.” It’s not nearly as deep as, say, Mass Effect, but in certain situations, you’re prompted to ask questions from a two-choice list. Depending on what you ask, you may get more background or garner a slightly different reaction. You’ll have only one shot at each conversation (replay-value alert!), but the world itself is fairly wide-open. If you visited the City Hall earlier and you’re still in town, you can always backtrack.

But not surprisingly, the real meat of our demo was the storyline — hardcore franchise buffs should be happy to note that it’s all coming along swimmingly. With a few nods to previous series entries (Silent Hill: Origins trucker Travis shows up as giving the hitchhiking Alex a ride to Shepherd’s Glen) and the franchise’s trademark general weirdness intact, the team behind Homecoming is dead-set (heh, sorry) on making sure that the plot holds up in the tradition of Silent Hill 2’s psychological wake, rather than emulating any of the other, more literal-minded chapters.

Why is Alex’s hometown shrouded in fog and devoid of people (except for a handful of characters we saw during the demo, including his childhood friend, Elle; Elle’s mom, Judge Holloway; and a kooky junkyard owner named Curtis)? Why is Elle putting up a flier for so many missing townspeople? Where has your brother run off to, and why is your mom sitting around with a gun in her lap? And how the hell do you end up in Silent Hill? Well, we know the answer to that last one, but we certainly aren’t telling.

From the frantic action pace of Resident Evil V I moved to another of my favorite horror franchises, the creepy and slightly less actiony Silent Hill. But, less action doesn't make it any less scary. I know many people were concerned that Silent Hill: Homecoming was not being worked on by the original SH crew, but allow me to tell you that while the game may be somewhat different in certain ways, it more than lives up to the Silent Hill moniker.

This was the second time I had visited Silent Hill: Homecoming. The first was at Konami's Editor's day and I was excited to see that they had a new level to show off at E3. The gameplay is basically the same as you wander the grimy halls searching for the pieces that will solve a sliver of the Silent Hill mystery. You play a man returning from military service who must go on a search to find his missing brother. Familiar themes of loss from previous games are also present here.

The level starts as the disembodied voice of a woman calls to you from behind a door. She begs you to help her find her memories and once they are found, the woman promises to help you find your way out of the building. So, off you go to search the halls and many locked doors for some postcards to bring back to her. But be sure to have your wits about you because you never know if an errant nurse is going to be waiting around the corner. The fellow who was watching me play let me know that the end of the level would bring a pretty cool surprise. However as much as I love surprises of the Silent Hill variety, I decided to restrain myself so I could save the scare for when I play the game in the comfort of my living room

The new level looked appropriately dirty and corroded in classic SH style. Some new mechanics include a visible health meter and the ability to cut your way through certain walls. The battle system receives a makeover with new attacks, counter attacks and dodges. The music, created by longtime Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka retains plenty of the SH flavor and yet still manages to be noticeably new. The music is a huge part of any Silent Hill experience and even manages to become a character in and of itself.

Ultimately, whether or not this Silent Hill succeeds will be left in the hands of the fans and consumers. If you are a fan of the franchise (like me) I feel confident that you will find much to enjoy as it seems to follow the basic SH tradition. If you are the type (like Tiny) who feels you've played Silent Hill and don't need to have that experience again, perhaps this won't be the game for you. But either way you'll be able to make the decision for yourself when the game hits the 360 and the PS3 in September.

Hmmm interesting! I never realised that SH didn't have a black character untill now.

Yah I know lol

We get to visit the Grand Hotel in Silent Hill, me finks we will see another area of the city of Silent Hill!

btw another reveiw
We got not just one but two up-close looks at Konami’s Silent Hill: Homecoming at this year’s E3, and what we saw was encouraging. Even among fans the series has its share of nonbelievers, folks who have grown increasingly frustrated with each release’s strict adherence to certain formulaic elements, such as a fixed camera and non-intuitive combat mechanics. With a new developer on board – Double Helix Games – and some cool new ideas to implement from the latest release in the series, the PlayStation Portable-exclusive Silent Hill: 0rigins, Silent Hill: Homecoming is looking like it will offer the top-to-bottom restructuring that fans of the series have been waiting so long for, starting with versions for Xbox 360 and Windows PCs in addition to PlayStation 3.

Click through for the goods.

For those who need to be refreshed, this latest Silent Hill story follows Alex Shepard, a military man who is returning to his family’s home in Shepard’s Glen when the game opens. Alex’s trip is not necessarily a happy one either; he’s been receiving subconscious suggestions – perhaps it’s a message? – that his father and brother are both in trouble. Of course, Alex doesn’t settle in for some nice family time in Shepard’s Glen; instead, he finds himself wandering along the fog-shrouded, nightmare-infested streets of Silent Hill.

Our first look at Silent Hill: Homecoming during E3 came at Konami’s press conference. Here we got our first look at the new, player-controlled camera which is… well… a fully adjustable camera. It’s not exactly groundbreaking, is it? We’re just pleased to finally see it in a Silent Hill game after struggling for so many years beneath the oppressive weight of fixed perspectives.

We also got to see Alex in conversation with the soon-to-be former mayor of Shepard’s Glen. Rather than unfolding as a straight cutscene, the exchange was interrupted at several points with a list of dialogue options from which players can choose Alex’s response. Again, nothing which will redefine gaming as we know it, but yet another welcome new feature for better immersing players in Homecoming’s story.

Alex’s chat is interrupted when a massive, beastly thing descends from the shadowy ceiling of the large, round room where he first finds the mayor. After mashing the civil servant into a fine, red paste, the creature turns its attention to Alex. The new camera really gets a workout during this battle, with Alex circling the room as he destroys a series fleshy counterweights which together suspend the creature from the ceiling. Taking out the weights isn’t necessary – the creature is low enough that damage can be dealt as it hangs – but it does give Alex an added layer of strategy to work with.

image

Later on during the show we visited Konami’s booth for a short hands-on session with the game. This section saw Alex working his way into Silent Hill’s Grand Hotel and then… well… we didn’t have time to get any further. However, we did see enough to get more of a feel for the new controls and some of the new features.

The new camera introduces some new control quirks. Alex is constantly strafing when he is moved with the left analog stick; the right is required to adjust the direction he’s facing. It’s not the most intuitive arrangement, but it worked well enough during our decidedly “safe” (i.e. mostly monster-free) session. Weapons and item inventories are now accessible separately with a push of the left and right bumpers on an Xbox 360 gamepad. The weapons we saw – an axe, a knife and a pistol – do not break and in fact remain in Alex’s inventory once found. They also fill non-combat roles, such as using the axe to chop through a boarded up door.

The great auto-mapping system seen in Silent Hill: 0rigins has been carried over to Homecoming. Each location in the game has its own map which must be found. Once Alex has it in his inventory, he can open it up to look at the full layout of his surroundings. As he explores, doors and other points of interest (such as blocked hallways, locked doors, yawning pits, etc.) are automatically marked.

Also returning from 0rigins is head-tracking. Whenever Alex is near something he can interact with – be it a door, weapon/item, puzzle, etc. – his head will automatically turn to look at the object in question. Players can also dip into a first-person perspective when not moving for a closer look, though this feature unfortunately does not work with firearms as well.

From the looks of things, the most tired and outdated gameplay mechanics have been streamlined or done away with completely. Double Helix had to face some hard choices in designing the game. How does one distinguish between a series motif and outdated gameplay? In the end, they seem to have followed the most basic rule for any developer to follow: give the gamers something fun to play with. Silent Hill: Homecoming looks like it offers just that, maintaining the overall tone of the series while offering up a new, far more intuitive and enjoyable way to play.

Pendulum Announces New Facial Performance Division, Alter Ego, At SIGGRAPH
Thursday August 7, 2008

Pendulum's AlterEgo team will be presenting their technology at SIGGRAPH along with examples from some of their recent projects at the Vicon booth (#1101) on Tuesday August 12 at 12:15 p.m., Wednesday August 13 at 12:15 and 4:30 p.m., and Thursday August 14 at 11:10 a.m.

The AlterEgo team, armed with their most recent innovation and Vicon's new T160 cameras will be giving a demonstration of an unprecedented high-res real-time facial mocap visualization technology, during each of their presentations.

Creation of lifelike and emotive digital characters is one of the most technically complex and arduously sought after facets of the digital animation pipeline -- and of the entertainment industry as a whole. Of course, one of the greatest barriers to achieving compelling 3D characters is the implementation of believable facial performances.

This is an area in which leading 3D animation studio, Pendulum, has focused a great deal of R&D. To this end, they set out to develop a set of proprietary software tools with which they could create the kind of high-end characters that their clients and the studio's owners/directors, Rob Taylor and Mike McCormick, wanted for their productions. The resulting technology, along with high-quality full-performance motion-capture data, like that provided by their long-time production partner, Vicon House of Moves, allows Pendulum to create some amazingly believable facial performances.

They've been evolving this technology for use on a wide range of production pipelines, from high-resolution characters like their "Emotional Old Man" piece, their award-winning MARK ANTONY short, and pre-rendered game cinematics like SEGA/Secret Level's upcoming GOLDEN AXE: BEAST RIDER and the diverse characters of THQ's STUNTMAN: IGNITION cinematic trailers, as well as real-time game-engine based productions, such as the 70 minutes of in-game cinematics they created for Konami's anticipated SILENT HILL V and THQ/Volition's upcoming sequel, RED FACTION: GUERILLA.

Named from the patented software at the heart of their process, the AlterEgo group will offer their services to clients from throughout the film, games, and broadcast arenas. Coupled with high quality facial mocap data, the technology at the core of AlterEgo's services allows them to deliver high-end facial performances at remarkable speeds, transforming extensive amount of mo-cap data into realistic and accurate facial performances. The team's expertise conforming to their clients' diverse pipelines allows them to work directly with real-time engines like UNREAL 3 as well as more traditional pre-render pipelines like Maya or XSI.

This flexibility increases AlterEgo's cost-effectiveness and throughput, while providing an unparalleled solution for leading game developers, filmmakers, and whoever is seeking high quality facial animation.

For more information about AlterEgo go to http://www.studiopendulum.com/alterego.

Double Helix games have apparently been listening to SH fans since the start, especially on my favourite SH forum (which is linked to fom Pendulum's offical website)

*The 3D camera was implimented as fans didnt like the fixed camera points
*The box art was noticed to be spelt wrong after fans noticed it was Shepard, not Shepherd (it is now Shepherd)
*Fans wanted to see new locations as well as old, so Double Helix included Alchemilla, Toluca Prison
*Fans wanted a SH2 experience so Double Helix have worked hard at it
*Also fans who drew monsters for fun have been asked if Double Helix can do something similar

If you remember last year we reported on Climax releasing details on their website about some forthcoming videogame releases in the pipeline. One of which is a still a yet to be announced Konami title. Now Silent Hill: Origins has released so we can safely rule out the possibility of this being the Konami project. In fact as Silent Hill: Orgins was recieved quite well this strengthens the idea even more that another Silent Hill related videogame maybe in the works perhaps for a 2009 release. Also take into account that Akira Yamaoka hinted sometime ago that he is working on a still unannounced project where he would resume the role of a similar position like he has when producing musicial scores for the Silent Hill series. Is Akira working alongside The Climax Group?

Recently Climax have updated their website displaying at the bottom of it an unknown Playstation 3 title, another secret project for Codemasters and of course the mysterious Konami title which just says "New For Konami" with the Konami logo beside it no platform of the title is even specified.

Of course we can't say for sure this secret game is a Silent Hill project but the chances are pretty likely this could be the case. We will update you on any further developments surrounding this title when news becomes available.

1- Team Silent's work on the franchise is what set the series up and made it stand out as unique against other games of a similar genre. Has it felt like a daunting task trying to fill the shoes of Team Silent and continue the series?

Silent Hill has had tremendous success as a video game series. To pitch and then gain the opportunity to continue this franchise was, collectively, one of the highlights of the team’s career. Never before had we felt the weight of so many concerned people wondering what we’d do to their pride and joy. As with any complex task you undertake in life; the seemingly impossible can be achieved by breaking it into more manageable segments. Recreating or even evolving that experience comes from an understanding of what those components are, and how they interrelate.
We all had a deep appreciation for the series before we started work upon this next instalment; some of the team (myself included) were fans already.
How would your readers feel if given this opportunity? I’d wager they’d feel both daunted and tremendously excited; a chance to tell their story; to add to the legacy. In a nutshell, that’s a fairly accurate representation of how the team felt. It’s been a challenging but ultimately tremendously rewarding experience for us all.

2- Early on in Homecoming's development Akira Yamaoka mentioned working on creating a unique idea of "fear in daylight". Is this something which was worked into Homecoming?

This is not something we specifically dealt with; it may have been something Yamaoka-san was working on separately to our development.

3- What would you say were the major inspirations in the design of Homecoming? Were there any external influences outside of the existing games?

The influences of the team - as always – stem from numerous sources. We look at films and literature for narrative progression. There are always layers to any Silent Hill game; the surface encounters; the meaning that drives those events and finally their context within the overall narrative. It’s been mentioned in other interviews, but we looked at films like Jacob’s ladder, the Ring, Dark Water, Hellraiser etc. Each of these offers elements the team can then use as guidance. That’s not to say we take the film in its entirety. We do look at themes, costume designs, narrative exposition, setting, lighting etc. There are so many elements that go into the creation of game; we end up drawing upon many sources.
However I would like the readers to consider this, all our life experiences are shaped by our exposure to the world at large and though these events shape us, they do not dictate who we are. Game creation is no different, we look at games within the genre, films and literature for narrative, but that doesn’t mean we copy what we see. Our experience shapes our thought processes so we can create a journey that is unique, yet grounded in rules; rules we can intuit through exposure to a defined worldspace.

4- Now that Team Silent is apparently no longer involved, how does a Western developer such as Double Helix make sure that the series' unique Japanese sensibilities are preserved in order to prevent Silent Hill from becoming just another horror franchise? Aside from Mr. Yamaoka, did you maintain any communication with the other members of Team Silent?

We did not have any direct contact with other members of Team Silent; though it is my understanding that Yamaoka-san shared with his previous colleagues our work in progress to garner feedback, which he subsequently brought to the development team.

5- What are your opinions of the previous Silent Hill games are and what do you think their strong points/weak points were? How have you built on this with Silent Hill: Homecoming?

I believe the previous Silent Hill games are landmark titles. They may have appealed to only a smaller sub-set of the game playing audience at large, but they were visionary in their representation of an adult narrative. When I say adult I mean we have flawed characters dealing with complex issues with no easy resolution. The depth of narrative was unlike any other game I’d played.
From my own perspective I believe the flaws to the series included, the combat mechanics, world interaction and interface interaction. These aspects were ‘clunky’ in execution – I’m aware that some of this was conscious choice, however, anytime a game chooses a particular implementation of a mechanic that draws me out of the experience and reminds me I’m playing a game, I believe, it’s a bad choice.
We focussed on maintaining the essence of why the player was hampered but have implemented a different solution that gains fluidity.

6- With this being the first Silent Hill game published on a next gen console you have been challenged with preserving aspects of the series which make it unique with simultaneous expectations to deliver a "next gen experience". Can you comment on any hurdles you've had to overcome keeping the game true to its roots while evolving it onto next gen?

For the team, this particular game generated a great many challenges. We were creating this game on a new engine and were therefore unaware of its full capability. For a fair amount of time we would be putting new content in and seeing how that affected framerate. There were a great many unknowns. To achieve the level of quality expected for a next generation game required a lot of new methods for working, particularly on character creation. Different skin shaders were tried and tested. It takes a lot of trial and error before we get the result we need.
We changed the way the camera works in this instalment. I looked at the previous games and asked why those choices had been made; what we gain from them, and what we lose from them. I felt that given the nature of exploration, it was more important to feel grounded in the space. The fixed camera positions of previous games prevented a full exploration of the worldspace. I frequently found it frustrating, and it always reminded me I was in an artifice; creating a barrier to immersion. This is why we changed to a free-look system.
If I’m reminded that I’m playing a game, the fear and experience is lessened. We should strive for a perfect connection between ourselves and our avatar. I believe, when the boundaries are blurred our senses are heightened.
So we had our technological challenges. We also had our philosophical challenges. How do you portray a Japanese take on a Western horror from Western perspective? Capturing the essence of a particular mindset that’s foreign to your own way of thinking is not an easy task to achieve. However, I feel our experience on the team and our knowledge of the franchise helped create what we believe will be another successful instalment in the series.

7- From what we have seen so far there seems to have been heavy visual influence taken from the Silent Hill movie. This has caused concern in many fans since the movie and games are two very different entities. Will the story or universe in Homecoming be tied to the movie in any way, and can you comment on the heavy use of movie style visuals?

The aspects of the game that have been released to the public are only a small portion of the entire game. It is very difficult to form a truly objective opinion when you do not have access to all the information. If I blindfolded you and only gave you access to its mouth, what opinion would you form of a duck-billed platypus if I asked you to hypothesise how the rest of the creature was formed?
I also believe that because we are a western developer and not the original team, it is easy to let fear decide that the game cannot possibly be made by anyone else. There are talented games developers all over the world, all of whom, given the time and opportunity could do a very good Silent Hill game that would compliment the series. I know I mentioned this earlier, but I believe it’s very important to understand our thought processes are shaped by our experience, that doesn’t mean we copy. The film – if it provided anything – gave us visual references, not story, not characters, but stylistic cues on where to take our own character designs and that’s all. There is a motto I like to live by Take what is useful, discard what is useless, add that which is specifically your own. We haven’t tied the new game to the film. They are their own entities, equally valid but different stories in the same universe.

8- What processes do you go through when designing new monsters? How do you go about thinking of new ways to make the monsters meaningful and frightening?

We look at the psychological resonance created by the appearance of a character at a particular juncture in the game. What underlying psychosis is the character trying to represent? From this starting point we generate themes formed from that understanding. Some themes are workable, some are not. Those workable themes are massaged into very basic designs. Those designs then have to possess useful mechanical attributes that we can use and animate into a form that’s functional in the gameworld.
Then there are a number of qualities that create fear in the beholder. How was that (creature) created and would it be painful to go through were I the recipient? Do I stand a chance of defeating it? How would I suffer if it attacked me? If I lose will I suffer the same fate?
For those instances where I haven’t yet seen the creature in its entirety, fear of what it might look like, move, attack etc., those components are exacerbated in the mind of the beholder. If I can’t see it, then I can’t label it, if I can’t label it, I can’t understand it. When I don’t understand something threatening, I fear it, much more than when I do understand. It is in the nature of self preservation for all creatures to act this way.

9- Will Silent Hill: Homecoming have any strong ties to others in the series or will it be a new story completely? Can you comment on why you decided to make it that way?

This was part of the delicate balance we needed to maintain, and also part of the requirements Konami requested during the development of the game. Silent Hill: Homecoming had to be its own entity. It had to be playable as a discrete experience without having to buy the previous games. At the same time, there needed to be a sense of continuity from past games; portraying a world familiar to previous players. It is important for the series that we feel as though we are in the same world. Not necessarily the same time or even the same place, but familiar nonetheless.
Now that might seem a little vague and indeed the story is completely new, however, there are elements, threads that ‘may’ suggest a more direct connection to the past. For now I’d like to leave it there and allow the player to discover them. Suffice to say, we do know how important the past games are, and where appropriate and in a way that enhances the experience, a connection has been made.

10- When we explore areas, will the traditional Silent Hill approach be taken to advance (for example solving riddles, collecting items for puzzles etc), or will this instalment be more linear in its progression?

It most definitely uses the traditional approach to advancement. Large portions of the game operate under hub-based gameplay. There are some linear sections, but by and large it’s a very traditional approach so Silent Hill

11- Can you comment on the impact your responses during dialog sequences make on subsequent gameplay?

When faced with traditional gaming and a cutscene ensues, we are usually ‘spoon-fed’ information pertaining to our current plight. That information may raise questions in the mind of the player, that they have no way of answering – save waiting for the next cutscene. A dialogue tree offers the opportunity to anticipate those questions and provide answers; again, where appropriate. So we use it to further the player’s understanding. There are also specific instances where the player’s choice has a direct effect on the game. These instances will be reasonably obvious to the player when they occur. It is one of our methods for introducing replayability into the game. We want you to play it again and explore all the options available. You won’t get the full experience if you don’t. :)

12- Will we be revisiting any areas from past games and/or the movie or is every location brand new in this game? If all-new, which part of Silent Hill will this take place in?

There are mainly new areas - obviously Shepherds Glen is new. There are also new areas in Silent Hill and old areas too. It’s really a combination of new and old. I hesitate to say where we’re going in the game because I want you to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

13- From recent gameplay videos we have seen that Pyramid Head will be playing some kind of role in Homecoming. As an icon of the series in general this has caused quite a stir among fans with many mixed opinions. Can you comment on his appearance in the game at all?

I know his appearance has caused some consternation with the fans, saying he’s James’s demon and should not appear in any other version. As with everything else we do in the game his presence (or lack of) has a very real purpose. We do not stick characters in the game simply because they look ‘cool’. Any creature you find will have a very real purpose and meaning supported by discoverable evidence. From our perspective his presence is integral to the Silent Hill lore and he performs a specific function that is neither arbitrary nor trite.

14- How much impact has the fanbase responses to released footage had on development? Can you describe any changes or decisions which have been made because of fan reactions/comments/suggestions?

We do our own testing for the game using contracted specialists. It is their feedback we incorporate or change as appropriate. However, I would like to point out, that at a game’s inception we do take into consideration the concerns and requests of our target market. We use those wishes as guidelines for where we take the franchise and what aspects (if any) need changing in the next version. It is not practical for any game development studio to peruse forums and implement reactive changes based upon single or multiple threads posted.
The issue is that any game by its very nature is a creative process, as such whilst there are wrong answers; there are no definitive right ones. One person’s opinion is as equally valid as someone else’s. Since it is our studio that Konami have employed to create the experience, it is also our responsibility to get it right. We are mature and experienced developers, many of the team have been creating games for over 10 years.
Any developer goes through a process of due diligence before working with a publisher and then once work commences we have regular milestones (every 4 or 6 weeks usually) where work is checked and checked again, so there are many opportunities for them to exert content control if things are not progressing as planned. Obviously the publisher can request changes based upon their own investigations that are outside of our remit.

15- Now that the game is near release, has it turned out how you envisioned it being at the beginning of production or has it changed/evolved significantly from your initial vision?

All games go through an evolution during the product life-cycle. There are simply too many variables to be able to accurately predict their interplay at the start of the project so that it remains identical to the finished version. Though this may not be true for an in-house sequel; for a new project there are a great many lessons to learn. We use iteration to improve and polish the gameplay and like anything else; the more time you have, the better the end result.
Asking me if I’d change anything is like asking a painter when a painting is finished… To an outsider, you might say, when all the colouring is complete; but to an artist, he or she may see relationships in a partially finished or finished creation that alters the message they were originally trying to capture. They may have outside encounters that alter how they feel about their creation, causing a radical overhaul of their work. Game creation is no different. We see things differently as the game evolves from a paper specification to an interactive experience. As with all games I’ve made, I would have liked more time to finesse a few of the finer details of the game, but I’m sure that’s just the perfectionist in me :)

16- What do you think the future holds for the Silent Hill series?

The series is important to Konami; it is one of their premier franchises. There is much yet to be told; many characters’ must explore their personal issues through the lens of Silent Hill. Through this exploration and the facets of life it exposes, perhaps we can begin to understand yet the purpose of Silent Hill.
I have absolutely no doubt there will be another chapter in the ongoing saga of Silent Hill. It scares us, it fascinates us in equal measures. By rights no sane person would want to go through those kinds of experiences, but at the same time it touches on the need for catharsis we all have. Perhaps therefore, through a vicarious examination of someone else’s problems, we can shed light on our own. The need for that, I doubt, will ever change.

The gaming landscape has changed since the world last played a brand new Silent Hill experience, a fact Konami seem all-too aware of. To find out where the company plan on taking the survival-horror series next, we cornered associate producer Thomas Hulett to dish the dirt on Silent Hill: Homecoming.

How does this Silent Hill carry on from previous games in the series?

Well, erm, if you've played the whole series... the first three are similar; they say what they want to say; four went in a different direction... how succesful that is is open to debate. So, with Homecoming, we want to continue to see where the series can go and expand. I think it has a lot of potential as a horror franchise, it doesn't need to be confined to these set things, we just need to find what the core element the game needs is.

Given the name, is there an element here of going back to the series' roots?

Not neccesarily the roots. Basically, it hasn't been on a console in a number of years... I think its 2003 or 2004, when the fourth game came out. So going to consoles, especially the next-gen, we're looking to see what a next-gen Silent Hill will look like. The first game was on PS1, the others were on PS2, so with this game we're sort of saying here's a Silent Hill on a par with everything else you're playing. We're returning to Silent Hill in general, really.

Why are you revisiting the series now?

Well, survival horror is an important space. With Resident Evil and Silent Hill we defined what that genre is, so we really think Silent Hill is still important... we needed to move forward. While Resident Evil has moved into action with a couple of scares, we want silent Hill to uphold the psychological horror; the building dread, and a more cerebral sort of horror. So that's one thing I really think needs to be said with the series, the style of scare has to be the same.

A more deliberate approach, that's more cerebral... how will this be bourne out in the gameplay?

A lot of the game is about atmosphere. Its a combination of the graphics, the sound, the music, the story. It all has to add up into this paranoid experience. So you're always on edge while you play. So, beyond just improving the graphics, and the sound... with the combat improvements we've made we didn't want it to be like "oh, I've got these new moves, I can beat this guy senseless", we want the monsters to be scarier, harder. You're not just scared from the point of view that this is scary, you're scared because these monsters can come and kill you. You can run-away if you like, but if you choose to stay and fight, you're going to need to learn the combat system. If you screw up the monsters will come and make you pay. This is an important fear element.

How has the combat system changed from past titles?

In past titles it was really a single button affair. Monsters would come up and you'd basically hit the attack button a couple of times and they would fall over. What we really thought, with games moving forward and getting more complicated, that this really isn't the way to do things anymore. So, we added two different attack buttons - a fast weak attack and a slow strong attack. You can intermix them for combos, and there's also a dodge button, to help you evade an enemy attack. And then, if you miss a dodge, you get new attacks. You need to learn what you can do, and monsters will require certain styles. We also added finishing moves to reward players that learn the combat system. There's a wide variety, each monster has its own finishing moves depending on the weapon you're using.

Homecoming is singleplayer only. Would you consider a multiplayer mode in the future, perhaps?

Its always an interesting idea. Like, if you got this working with multiple people how cool would that be... but its a matter of 'how would that work'. Because I don't think you could do it as an add-on. A two-player mode. It would have to be a multiplayer Silent Hill to ensure it worked really well.

Like Metal Gear Online?

Right. I'd be open to that idea. But it hasn't come up yet.

Any differences between the game's launch formats?

There are no specific differences. Obviously, the Xbox has achievements, the PS3 has rumble support. There's no amazing Sixaxis thing. Get whichever version is for your favourite console, there's no advantage to any particular release.

In a crowded genre..do you look at the competition... or does Silent Hill tread its own path?

We always have to look at the competition, to see where they're going and think how we can be different; see if they're doing something similar, or better. We need to up our game. What I've noticed with a lot of the survival horror games coming out is that the focus is on violence, 'Saw'-type, in movie terms. SH is more cerebral. So its important we keep SH different, we have our own style and this is where we belong.

Story is important, then I guess. What have you done differently on this front?

You've always met a lot of characters in the SH series. You'd meet them, we'd have a cut-scene, and so on. We wanted to flesh them out. Create real people. I meet my mom in the game, there's a cut-scene, she tells me what I need to do, furthering the plot, but at the end of the cut-scene she's still sat there. So I can go up to her and talk again, for players who want that, I can flesh out the story with dialogue. You can ask questions... really flesh out the story. There's no 20 minute cut-scene. Its an optional way to bolster the characters.

Does the story have an 'ending'?

It has a proper ending! This story concludes in the game.

Are you setting up stuff that might continue later in the series?

The interesting thing about the SH games is that each game focusses upon a certain character's psychology. So in that way they're all stand-alone titles. That said, there are always questions raised, elements in the background that we draw from... and add to. Two games later maybe it'll reference what happens here... its possible.

If you've played the previous games there's winks and nods you'll pick up on, but it is a stand-alone title. All you need to know is that there's a scary town [chuckles].

How long is the singleplayer experience?

I'm not sure how long one play through is... there are more areas to explore. It should be a couple of hours longer, with secret items, multiple endings, and so on. You'll play it over again.

Will there be trophies on the PS3?

I don't believe so.

Any DLC plans?

We considered it early on, but for now we've decided against it.

What has the advent of next-gen consoles allowed you to do with regard to creating ambience?

The sound design has always been a crucial element of the series. And the next-gen consoles really provide amazing depth of sound. There's monsters with 40 sounds going at once. It adds a textured experience to the sound design.

When is Silent Hill: Homecoming out?

November in Europe on all platforms. It comes out in October in the US... I think Japan is after Europe, actually!

Dear customer,

Thank you very much for contacting the Konami customer support team.
Silent Hill Homecoming was postponed. It's unfortunately not being released
this year anymore, we are aiming for Q2 2009.

Absolutely stupid on their part. People are not just going to wait for months and months for the release.

I'm just going to import it if that's the case.

Dear customer,

Thank you very much for contacting the Konami customer support team.
We are sorry that there was confusion about the release date, Silent Hill
Homecoming is being released in November in the UK and in all other European
countries, the delay only accounts for Germany (release there probably Feruary
2009).

"The violence is considered highly impactful in such scenes as where an electric drill is explicitly forced through Alex's right eye socket, remaining there for an extended period as Alex screams and blood sprays from the wound. There are several scenarios in which this means of death is used, on one occasion the drill being wielded by a zombie-nurse and on another by a woman named Margaret. In an alternative scenario, Alex turns the drill on his attacker and the drill is explicitly forced up through the woman's chin until she falls to the floor with the drill embedded in her skull."

The scene which made Homecoming a 18, and got it banned in AU and Germany (although the Germans are still getting a cut down version)

Glen - Judge Hollaway/Elle Hollaways family :spin2:

Lyrics
Enough...
With the light...
Tell me why...
No time...

My death, to the living...
The flame, has no living heart...

Came a little, too late...
It's over!
Silent, but screaming!

Damage done to flesh,
what they said,
in the name of the land

Damage done to heart,
is the start,
of the end!

Damage done to soul,
and you know,
it knows where my...

Damage done to light,
was it love?
And the pain dies!

Adam Shepherd and Judge Hollaway run the Shepherds Glen cult who are at war with the order, who they see as evil (dont worry if you read this, apparently, there is a hell of a lot more to this game
