View Full Version : Christmas TOTP Axed by the BBC and Simon Cowell's offer rejected

IT’S been an annual tradition for the past 43 years.

Turkey, Brussels sprouts, a minor family row and the Top Of The Pops Christmas Special.

But now BBC Scrooges are axing the iconic show.

A festive telly schedule without the Pops is like Christmas pud without brandy butter — bland and stodgy.

BBC top brass pulled the plug on the weekly TOTP in July 2006.

But the Christmas Day shows were continued so well-fed viewers could find out who had won the year’s biggest chart battle.

Last year a sterling line-up including KAISER CHIEFS, GIRLS ALOUD, THE PROCLAIMERS and KATE NASH kept the flame alive.

Not so sure about this decision ...

:cloud: Simon Cowell should surely take some responsibility for his yearly hijacking of the Christmas No 1.

So annoyed, now I can make a proper thread.
Why? At the end of the day its cheap, and a land mark show, didn't deserve to be knocked off. It would of suited BBC2 and 3.

He's confirmed it on video now, he may have approached the BBC today. He wants to take the show to ITV and with the power Cowell has over ITV I'd be more surprised if ITV said no than yes. Its just a case of whether the BBC will let Simon have it or not.

Is this just for the Christmas special, or for it to come back weekly?

The way he's going on about it I'd actually say weekly ...

I think doing it monthly could work in todays TV environment, the biggest selling songs of the month.

Glad Simon's doing this, I hope it comes back weekly.

Top of the Pops is just passed it's sell by date, what would be the point of the BBC bring it back. Music TV has moved on since it was first Broadcast and now we have loads of channels with 24/7 music on satellite and at least one on freeview.

And before someone says that cost an arm an a leg for satellite, as long as you have a old sky dish you can buy a satellite receiver for about £30 and get over 400 channels for nothing, including music channels.

Yes, I dont want Top of The Pops back every week, but it acts as a tradition at Christmas, like Turkey, Sprouts and No-One watching the Queens speach. At the end of the day its only one hour, and its a great show to bring people together and reflect on the music year.

I know what you are saying and they could show it on BBC 3, but if it's like the Queen then I want "The Sound of Music" and "Wizard of Oz" on every year too

The Sound of Music was New Year last year
Yeah, BBC2/3 are fine, just its a flagship, reletavivly cheap show, and I think if its axed, its a waste.
