A big surprise is apparently awaiting American Idol's Top 12 eighth-season finalists.

"There's a big surprise coming when we get to the Top 12, but I can't reveal it right now," Fox reality chief Mike Darnell told TV Week in an interview released Sunday. "It is something that will be talked about and is something I think that has some element of controversy surrounding it."

While Darnell declined to reveal specifics about the eighth-season surprise, Idol enthusiasts can breathe a sigh of relief since he hinted that it won't impact the show's "core.

"It's not going to change what you think of American Idol and we don't want to do that," he told TV Week. "This show is, you know, a phenomenon. It's American, it's apple pie. We're not changing the core of the show."

Darnell added that details surrounding the surprise are not widely known by those involved with and participating in Idol's eighth season.

"No one knows," he told TV Week. "It's a long season and you want to keep as many surprises for the audience, for the press, for everybody, as you go along. Some controversies will pop out. But this is something that we sort of felt like, here's one set of things we're doing, we're going to wait and give you the other set when we get to the final 12."

American Idol's eighth-season finalists will also apparently have some additional surprises awaiting them, according to Darnell, who said the contestants will be residing together in a house rather than several individual apartments like the show's last few casts.

"We'll be doing more behind-the-scenes stuff with the kids, and they're going to live in a house, so if anything -- if sparks fly there, we'll show some of that," he explained to TV Week. "We're hoping to get more of who they are -- more of the reality version, to be honest with you. It makes the show tick."

In addition, Darnell also hinted that the eighth-season contestants will probably be receiving a visit from original Idol champ Kelly Clarkson -- whose fourth album "All I Ever Wanted" is due to drop March 17.

"I believe you might see something actually in the next couple of weeks from Kelly," Darnell told TV Week when asked if Clarkson would be coming back to the show.

Clarkson apparently won't be the only big star to grace Idol's eighth season, as Darnell said some talented musical mentors will also be featured.

"We're going to big it up. (Musicians) will have to be ridiculously big this season for us to have them as mentors," he told TV Week.

But the ITV ones are broadcasts 2 days after the US. But since American idol is so popular, I always end up seeing who got eliminated somewhere online, even if I dont want to! This year instead of the boy v girls every week, there are 4 rounds of heats with 8 in each, with the top boy and top girl getting through, along with the "next top votegetter (ie the person in 2nd place voting). Then the judges pick 4 "wildcards" to make the top 12.

Anyways I found some lit as to how the semi finals will go:

The semifinals will see the biggest change as the Wild Card round returns for the first time since Season 3. Also, there will be 36 semi-finalists picked instead of 24. They will be divided into 3 groups of 12. The groups of 12 will perform on Tuesday. At the conclusion of each results show on Wednesday, the male and female semifinalists who received the highest number of home viewers votes for their previous night's performance will instantly become a Top 12 finalist. In addition, another semifinalist that had received the next-highest number of votes after the performance episode — regardless of gender — will also become a finalist. In the wild card round, the next highest finishers plus other eliminated semi-finalists will return for one more chance to compete. The judges will pick the 3 performers left that they consider the best. No voting by the public will be done at this stage

the actual show is on, on thursdays and the results fridays. you get it on repeats on saturdays, sundays and i'm sure it on early monday or tuesday but i'm not sure.

Just watched the results show. I am not surprised by who went through. But I am realy pissed because some good singers are left out of the top 12.

They have chose the people singing tomorrow in the wildcards BTW.

Did anyone on this forum even watched this week? youre missing out.
Anyways it was really good with the 3 picked from group 3 being Lil Rounds, Jorge Nunez, and Scott Mcintyre.

Then they had the wildcard round on thursday with 8 people singing fo 3 spots. BUt in a twist they allowed 4 more spots. They went to Jasmine Murray, Matt Giraud, Anoop Desai and Megan Corkrey.

So next week is the final 13 with one eliminated each week. The show is gonna be on a much bigger stage than the semis.

And Ryan Seacrest announced, the theme is gonna be Michael Jackson this week. I hope he is back home and is gonna mentor. Its gonna be a great show.

I want her or Adam to win, they're the only people I'm really bothered about this year. I think Alexis will grow on me but overall it's a bit of a step down from last year's talent.

&LOL Markus, this is like properr obsession. I downloaded all his myspace demos from youtube, his performance on AI, ahhh he's just amazing.

Why can't we have someone like him on XF? He has the whole package, phenominal voice, amazingly hot, great personality, he's different, good musical knowledge [assuming he wrote most of his pre-idol material].

Casey was underrated. Her vocals on the song weren't actually bad, it was just a bad arrangement and well, a terrible song choice.
Same with Arianna, I actually thought her voice was good.

yeah watching casey's performance back it wasn't bad. i think people got distracted because of the faces she was pulling but if you close your eyes and just listen to her sing then it wasn't as bad as the judges made out.

OH man, I got it opposite. I thought she did a great job with that Colin Bailey rae song. Not as good as Alicia from the xfactor, but pretty good. But I didnt like her wildcard song that much.

I dont think anyone will do Man in the MIrror, since someone did it already last round (I didnt really like it). Diana's, although I didnt really like her style, she sang that song better than anyone I have seen sing it, apart from MJ.

The 2 that I am most pissed didnt make it, were Ju not, and Jesse. Ah well! It might still be good finals.

Adam should sing something like 'Earth Song' LMFAO. It'd be an interesting mix, he's defo got the voice for it though.

I hope he doesn't get the Chris Cornell arrangement of 'Billie Jean'. I love it, but David Cook did it and it was WOW, Austin Drage did it and it was goood, it'd be like overkill if another male did it.
