If you don't remember The Arctic Monkeys' 2007 sophomore album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, you're not alone. Despite the fact that the band's previous album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, held the honor of being the fastest-selling debut ever in the U.K. (it ultimately went quadruple platinum), fans weren't as receptive to the new set of heavier, faster tunes.

This, paired with the departure of original bassist Andy Nicholson due to fatigue from touring and dealing with the band's sudden rise to fame, and it looked like Arctic Monkeys were destined to be yet another band that couldn't outlive the massive amounts of hype bestowed upon it. Then, after some recording sessions in the Mojave Desert with producer (and Queens of the Stone Age frontman) Josh Homme, the band finally seemed comfortable with itself—perhaps for the first time. With the recent release of Humbug the Arctic Monkeys have finally shown a willingness to venture into new territory; with the new album's experimental edge and dips into psychedelia, the band is proving that it is completely deserving of a new batch of hype—one worth garnering this time around.

Arctic Monkeys, Kings Of Leon, Bob Dylan, Super Furry Animals and The Horrors are among the acts in consideration for this year's Uncut Music Award.

Running for its second year, our sister title rewards one act for creating the "most inspiring and rewarding musical experience" released in the past year. Last year the award went to Fleet Foxes for their self-titled debut album.

An initial longlist featuring 25 acts in consideration for the award has been announced today (September 22) – see the list in full below – which will be whittled down to a shortlist of eight, announced in the November issue of Uncut (out October 27).

A winner will be chosen by a specially chosen panel of judges and announced in the January issue (out November 24).

Judging the albums will be the magazine's editor, Allan Jones, Fleet Foxes' Robin Pecknold, Billy Bragg, folk singer Rachel Unthank, radio host Christian O'Connell, BBC creative head of music entertainment Mark Cooper, Stiff Records founder Dave Robinson plus broadcasters Mark Radcliffe, Bob Harris and Danny Kelly.

"The inaugural Uncut Music Award was a resounding success," said Jones of the contest, which saw Fleet Foxes pip the likes of The Raconteurs and Vampire Weekend to the accolade.

"This year's award looks like it will be just as hotly contested, with the judges facing a daunting task. There has been a lot of brilliant music over the last year, as our long list of 25 albums vividly demonstrates. Deciding which of them most merits winning the 2009 Uncut Music Award is going to be an exciting process, but no easy task."

The Uncut Music Award longlist is:

The Acorn – 'Glory Hope Mountain'
Animal Collective – 'Merriweather Post Pavilion'
Arctic Monkeys – 'Humbug'
Bill Callahan – 'Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle'
Graham Coxon – 'The Spinning Top'
Alela Diane – 'To Be Still'
Dirty Projectors – 'Bitte Orca'
Doves – 'Kingdom Of Rust'
The Duke And The King – 'Nothing Gold Can Stay'
Bob Dylan – 'Together Through Life'
Fever Ray – 'Fever Ray'
Grizzly Bear – 'Veckatimest'
Levon Helm – 'Electric Dirt'
The Horrors – 'Primary Colours'
Kings Of Leon – 'Only By The Night'
The Low Anthem – 'Oh My God Charlie Darwin'
Madness – 'The Liberty Of Norton Folgate'
Raphael Saadiq – 'The Way I See It'
Super Furry Animals – 'Dark Days/Light Years'
TV On The Radio – 'Dear Science'
Tinariwen – 'Imidiwan: Companions'
White Denim – 'Fits'
Wilco – 'Wilco (The Album)'
Wild Beasts – 'Two Dancers'
The xx – 'xx'

Arctic Monkeys have confirmed that 'Cornerstone' will be the second single from their Humbug album.

The Sheffield band release the track on November 16. Following the success of the vinyl release of previous single 'Crying Lightning' in Oxfam stores, the band will be teaming up with the charity shop again.

New tracks 'Catapult', 'Sketchead' and 'Fright Lined Dining Room' will feature as B-sides.

Alex Turner's band are currently touring America, but will return to the UK in November for a sold-out UK arena tour.

The group scored their third UK albums chart number one with Humbug in August.

well releasing singles through oxfam also on vinyl doesn't help 'em but they are stilll a big band selling out concerts and getting number 1 album, i think the next album has to be a bit more commercial really

I think you need the right balance really, I know they probably don't want to be too much of a commerical band, but if they dissapear from the mainsteam too much, they're likely to be forgotten.

The members of Arctic Monkeys have announced that they wll be taking a break this summer.

The band stated they will not be playing shows in the United Kingdom, therefore not being involved in any of 2010's summer festivals. After their tour of the United States in April, the group will be finished touring in support of their third full-length album Humbug.

"I think we're doing a quick campaign this time round," said drummer Matt Helders. "We're quite eager to record again."

The Arctic Monkeys drummer also went on to comment about the band's next batch of material.

"It's going to be different again," he said. "Not necessarily in the same direction of the last record. There are some left overs from the last record - stuff that we saved because we thought it'd be good enough for another album but didn't fit with the third album - a bit heavier and more upbeat."

Before starting their US tour and break from performing, the Arctic Monkeys are scheduled to play at the Royal Albert Hall in London on March 27 as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust concert series.

Arctic Monkeys have revealed that they plan to start recording their next album as soon as their US tour finishes next month.

Speaking to NME Radio, the group affirmed that they are eager to start work on the follow-up to last year's Humbug now, rather than take time off.

"We've said we'll stop touring this album and we're eager to start working on new stuff again, not have time off again," explained drummer Matt Helders.

He added that the band are eyeing a return for Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme as producer, although it is currently uncertain whether both parties will be free at the same time.

"It's hard to say, both parties are up for it but they have a lot going on around the time we'd need to be recording," he said. "But we'd like to."

Echoing his bandmate's enthusiasm, frontman Alex Turner revealed that they have already started work on new material, adding: "We haven't tied our shoelaces yet, so it's hard to say [what it would sound like]. There's a few things we've been playing around together and we've spoke about how we might go about it. We haven't started walking yet, the laces are undone, never mind dancing."

Iceman
31-03-2010, 10:26 PM
Alex Turner has said that there are presently no plans for side-project The Last Shadow Puppets to return to the studio.

The Arctic Monkeys frontman, who recorded debut The Age Of The Understatement alongside former Rascals singer Miles Kane in 2008, admitted that it is unlikely the duo will return for some time.

When quizzed about the group's upcoming plans on Absolute Radio, he replied: "I wouldn't have thought so, no. Miles has just kind of completed his record, so that will sort of tie him up for a bit I think. Yeah, I don't think so."

Arctic Monkeys played at London's Royal Albert Hall venue on Saturday in aid of charity Teenage Cancer Trust. Turner revealed that he was looking forward to his family travelling down to see the band perform.

He added: "Yeah, it's the one isn't it, to bring them down to? My mum and dad are coming. It's got big heritage, but yeah, obviously it's amazing.

"It makes a difference when you play in a place that looks nice as well, inside, where it's like traditional."

Florence And The Machine are the leading act in this year's Mojo Honours List with nominations in four categories.

Florence Welch's band has been nominated for 'Breakthrough Act', 'Best Album', 'Best Live Act' and 'Song Of The Year' for 'You've Got The Love', according to the BBC.

Kasabian are up for three prizes, under 'Best Live Act', 'Song Of The Year' for 'Fire' and 'Best Album' for 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum'.

Richard Hawley and the Arctic Monkeys have two nominations each, with both nominated for 'Best Song', for 'Open Up Your Door' and 'Crying Lightning', respectively.

Hawkwind are to receive the 2010 'Mojo Maverick' award.

"Despite the fact that they have rarely flirted with the mainstream, their music and their attitude has inspired so many different areas of modern music," said Mojo's editor-in-chief, Phil Alexander.

The winners will be voted for by readers of Mojo magazine, and will be revealed in a ceremony on June 10 in London.

Arctic Monkeys have started work on their fourth album with producer James Ford - and are hoping to release it later this year.

NME understands that the Sheffield four-piece started sessions at the end of 2010 in London, and are continuing work on it in Los Angeles.

Alex Turner and are reportedly hoping release the album in late spring at the earliest.

Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders has revealed that the band's new album will be more accessible than their previous LP.

The group have been in Los Angeles recording new album Suck It And See, which is due to be released June 6 in the UK.

"Some of the songs are a bit more instant," Helders told NME. "A bit more poppy, certainly, than Humbug was."

"It's enjoyable for us and the listener. And it's maybe a bit more easy going. Not easy listening, but with a few poppier tunes. But in an interesting way."

Elaborating further on how the group decided the direction in which to take their fourth studio album, he explained: "With Humbug we recorded 25 songs and narrowed it down afterwards. This time we had a clear idea of where we were going before we even went to the studio."

The band recently surprised fans by unveiling new track 'Brick By Brick' with its corresponding video online.

Arctic Monkeys have announced details of the lead single from their upcoming album Suck It And See.

'Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair' will be available digitally on April 11. A 7" single backed by album track 'Brick By Brick' to mark Record Store Day will follow on April 16.

A second 7" vinyl featuring B-side 'I.D.S.T.' and 10" vinyl and digital bundle complete with the same track plus 'The Blond-O-Sonic Shimmer Trap' will be released on May 30.

The band's drummer Matt Helders has claimed that Suck It And See is "more instant" and "more poppy" than predecessor Humbug.

Other Record Store Day 2011 releases include a double-sided single by Radiohead and a Foo Fighters covers album.

Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner has apologised for his criticism of Take That back in 2006.

At the time, Turner labelled the band a "load of b*llocks" at the Q Awards. This led to later claims that the Arctic Monkeys missed the 2008 Brit Awards to avoid clashing with Take That.

Turner recently told NME that he takes the insults back, saying: "We love Gary Barlow.

"I think I really offended him a few years ago though, which I'm sorry about. I didn't understand it then. Didn't know what was going on, trying to rustle some feathers."

Turner also said that his band's next album, Suck It and See, will contain more humour that their 2009 release Humbug.

Turner explained: "There were times in the lyrics on Humbug when I went into some corners that I didn't need to. But I went there and I think there's still some humour on that album. But it's definitely more prominent on [Suck It and See]. There's a few more gags. Not just in the words but in the guitar solos as well."

Suck It And See Review by Alex Turner

She's Thunderstorms
I remember writing this one when there was a storm going on. They get like mad storms over there [in New York], like, apocalyptic. I’m always trying to think of different interesting ways to like describe somebody but compliment them too. So in that one, I like the idea that she’s not even a thunderstorm, she’s more than one. I quite like the fact she’s plural. 'Thunderstorms’ meaning just, y’know, awesome!

Black Treacle
This was much later down the line. I watched a couple of westerns when we were doing this, like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid which gets a reference in there. I also just wanted to put 'belly-button piercings’ in a tune, I thought that would be good. I’d kind of wanted to do it for a couple of weeks and then managed to fit it in there. Why? I’d not thought about them for a while and they came on my radar somehow. And then I thought about this thing of them and the stars being juxtaposed.

Brick By Brick
It’s just a ****ing laugh, isn’t it? It’s got, like, three “rock’n’rolls” in it. We were in Miami on tour once and we just got off a long flight to there and we had an idea for a song called 'Brick By Brick’ and so we wrote it that night just sorta in a bar. But it were quite loose, we thought about it as the concept of a song and all these things that you want to do – brick by brick – and we just made a list of them that was probably three times as long as what it ended up over that night and the next few weeks.

It was probably the first tune we had for this. We’re also working on 'Brick By Brick 2.0’. It’s called 'IDST’. Do you remember that? When you’d write on a bus seat, or whatever, 'I love whoever IDST’ – If Destroyed Still True? So that iron’s in the fire now.”

The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala
There’s always a load of words in our tunes, isn’t there. And I was trying to think of a way of being a bit more economical, so we thought the one way of doing that is having really simple choruses but quite complicated verses lyrically – and that were one of them. I mean it’s based on a place that I’ve been but I don’t necessarily want that to be what the listener associates it with.

’Cause maybe they can relate it to a place they’ve been. I don’t want to ruin that by giving them a map. Some great harmonies on this
song too. [Producer] James Ford’s favourite bit of this record is on that song. It goes “uh-oh-uh-oh-wo”. Maybe it’s because it sounds like the Klaxons. I always think he prefers them to us.

Don’t Sit Down ’Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair
Well, that’s something somebody said. Oh, in fact I said it to somebody whose chair I’d moved and I didn’t want them to hurt themselves. This was while we were in the studio doing the Submarine recording [Alex recorded the soundtrack to friend Richard Ayoade’s debut film] and James said, 'Oh, that sounds like it could be like a ’60s garage Nuggets tune and be called that’.

So then we thought, well, ok if that’s what you can’t do (sit down, ’cos I’ve moved your chair), then what sort of ridiculous things can you do that are probably more dangerous than if you just sat down? But also I quite like that it’s, y’know, well, you don’t want people to be sat down, do you? You want them to be up. That’s going to be our first single I think.

Library Pictures
“This is one where I definitely think the words are taking a backseat. It’s just about chaos. Like, all the sound of it – all the music and guitars and drums – everything’s just barmy and I’m trying to make the lyrics subscribe to that as well. Do I ever do that William Burroughs thing where you cut words up and arrange them randomly? No, I never actually do it physically but maybe in my head a little bit. We recorded it one day like really hungover and had a great day. It were a really good hangover, like a giddy one.

All My Own Stunts
Josh [Homme] comes and sings on this one. He’s very dominant, his voice. When you record his voice it just sort of leaps out, it’s great. What else can I tell you about that one? It’s got another reference to cowboy films. It just says, “I’ve been watching cowboy films on gloomy afternoons” which were something I were doing at the time. It’s also where we let ourselves have a bit of a wig-out.

There’s not as much wigging out on this [album] as the last one, we rationed it. Also at the end you hear a little snippet of this song we were making up while we in the studio there called 'I’m From High Green’ which is where we’re from. It was summat we were singing quite a lot, the four of us, while we were there. How does it go again? Oh yeah, so you’ve got to do it in a sort of Chris Cornell-style vocal: “I lost my accent/I live the dream/but I still like my ale/because I’m from High Green”. That sort of thing. Look out for it, you get a little snip.

Reckless Serenade
I think this sort of sounds the best. I really like the recording of this one, I think it’s come out the best. It’s just a love song I suppose. In terms of the sound I guess some of the stuff we were listening to was like the Pixies. And having the drums quite tough, that comes across on that tune a bit.

Piledriver Waltz
This one is on the Submarine soundtrack although I didn’t write it specifically for that. I had a couple of things lying around that were too quiet to be Monkeys tunes – well, that’s what I thought, anyway. So I said, what about these and Richard [Ayoade] liked them. But then we were putting this together and I really thought it might fit in with 'Thunderstorms’ and 'Suck It And See’.

So we thought why not just do another version [recorded with the full band] because the one on Submarine is just me and James, he played drums and there’s some strings and stuff on it. I think doing that Submarine album did lead me into some of the songs on this album too.”

Love Is A Laserquest
I’ve never listened to country music before, it was just something I totally didn’t get until pretty recently. I’ve always been, 'Nah, not into that world’, but I’ve started to get something out of that now. The sort of sounds of that music I’m still not crazy about but the words are really good. Like Hank Williams, George Jones and Roger Miller and even like Johnny Cash – they’re just smart-arses, those guys, who write good country tunes, y’know. It’s really funny or really sad. And they do that thing so well. This tune is the closest to that. Not like in the sound, but in the lyrics.”

Suck It And See
That is something that I started writing when we were recording those Submarine tracks. It just sort of came to me that melody and chorus, it’s quite Beach Boys-y which is something I’ve been listening to a lot recently, and always have. We decided to make it the title track quite near the end – once the pedals thing didn’t really come off. When we played it to someone earlier they were asking us about the fizzy drink reference in that where it says “dandelion and burdock” – a lot of people don’t get that and don’t realise what it is.

Something I like the idea of is putting colloquialisms where they feel strange – especially in some of the other tunes like the fuzzy, heavier ones, it feels quite funny when you can drop in something very British next to 'Raw Power’ guitars.

That’s Where You’re Wrong
It were all about having the words not get in the way of this one. That were one of the last ones we did when we were in London before Christmas. We did it in one day. It’s a bit like '505’ – that tune on the second album, where it’s just two chords all the way through and we’d wanted to do a tune like that again for a while. There’s loads of good examples of that like that LCD Soundsystem 'All My Friends’ tune.

It’s just the two chords that build and build. But for a while I didn’t have words for that – I was just singing 'Edge and Bono’. There’s a demo of it somewhere where it’s mostly 'Edge and Bono’. I dunno what else to say about that one. It were a bit of a late runner that one but it worked out.”

It were a bit of a late runner that one but it worked out.”

read it in NME :p got a bad feeling if 'Brick by Brick' made the album (I really can't get into that at all) and the first single isn't amazing (like Brianstorm, Crying Lightning and ...Dancefloor were) :(

Having started their music career like a runaway train in 2005, it was inevitable Arctic Monkeys would hit the buffers at some point.

A fresh-faced indie-guitar quartet from Sheffield, they were barely out of their teens when their first album, with pithy songs about mini-cabs and nightclubs, became the fastest-selling debut in history.

But the party didn’t last. The band’s Glastonbury headline slot in 2007 was disappointing and their last album, Humbug, saw them abandon catchy choruses for heavy, muscular riffs.

In a bid to be seen as more serious musicians, they grew their mop-topped hair and adopted the look of Seventies rock gods.
All grown up: Arctic Monkeys have returned with a rejuvenated sound

All grown up: Arctic Monkeys have returned with a rejuvenated sound

Singer Alex Turner has done some serious thinking — and made more regular visits to his barber — since. This fourth album, built around potent hooks and chiming guitars, reaffirms his status as one of his generation’s sharpest songwriters.

From the album title (apparently chosen in tribute to Carry On films — though some worried U.S. stores have covered it up) to the accessible arrangements, it is a huge step in the right direction. Made in the same LA studio as Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, it has a sunny feel.

‘Everyone was in a good mood when we were there. The fact we were having a laugh comes across,’ says Turner. ‘We wanted the album to sound up; not too serious.’

The band — Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and Matt Helders — also changed their approach in the studio. Rather than piece songs together by jamming, they finished the words and music before starting work with producer James Ford.

The outcome is a tight, melodic affair in which a dozen songs race by in 40 minutes.

Turner has upped his game as a singer. Once noted for barking out his lyrics in short, sharp bursts, he’s now more versatile. As a songwriter, too, there are signs of maturity.

Once surly in interviews and spiky on record, the four rapscallions from High Green are now well-travelled individuals.

Turner moved to New York when his girlfriend, model Alexa Chung, took a job with MTV. Drummer Helders has had rap mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs on speed dial since they worked together last year.

With lives like these, another batch of songs about provincial dancefloors and chip shops would have had a hollow ring. The impression that this is a more thoughtful affair is clear from the first two tracks, She’s Thunderstorms and Black Treacle, both jangling, melodic workouts owing plenty to the Sixties beat boom.

From that point, the songs swing between sweet, chiming pop and harder rock ’n’ roll numbers in thrall to glam-era Bowie and The Jam.

Reckless Serenade and Piledriver Waltz show the band’s softer side, with their rock instincts apparent on Don’t Sit Down ’Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair and Library Pictures.

When they broke through, Arctic Monkeys were hailed as saviours of British rock. But they turned out to be the last of a breed before being replaced by electro-popsters and rappers. This rejuvenation — especially if it gives homegrown guitar music a boost — is timely.
