BRITNEY Spears made an embarrassing on-stage gaffe last night when she forgot what city she was performing in.
The 27-year-old singer stunned fans in Manchester by shouting out: "What's up, London?"
The blunder drew boos, jeers and a few laughs from the packed MEN arena.
One fan said: "It was really odd.
"I'm not sure if she noticed as she then continued with the performance."
The concert was the controversial star's only British date outside the capital on her current Circus tour. Once again she mimed all her hits.

I was wondering. How many of you would be happy to pay for concert tickets to go and see somebody mime? I certainly wouldn't.

I only like either powerful shows, or small intimate gigs. Preferably the latter. No miming.
IMO if she can't perform live then she shouldn't tour at all

No I wouldn't be happy. I would rather slighty bad vocals and a live performance than miming.
Take That manage to dance,sing,unicycle(lmao) and put on an amazing show. Oh and play instruments! They even did one song where they put on clown make-up while singing.

I'm not sure what to choose. Technically I have, as I bought Britney tickets. However I really see it more as a big rave than a concert as I only got them as I figured it would be a fun night, not because I absolutely love her.
I think I'll go for no way as, if it was an artist I truly loved or was going to because of their music and they mimed I would be pissed off. I have no respect for Britney as a performer these days, its not even fair to say it okay if she mimes cos she puts on a great show - because she doesn't, Her dancing is beyond mediocre, it's the backup dancers that do all the work.

To be totally fair though, it is possible to do both - just look at Beyonce, Christina, GaGa. They all put on big, big shows but manage to sing live and pull it off well. I'm not saying that Britney is capable of this so it's not really fair to expect it of her.

I think if it was anyone but Britney people wouldn't be happy with it. But if the fans are alright with not hearing a live performance then whatever.

Why should I see a problem with it when myself and the whole of Britney's fan base knows she mimes? It's my prerogative whether I want to go see something like that. I'd rather go see a spicy show which features an artist with stage presence than a dull boring artist attempting to dance whaling their 'meaningful' songs into a microphone.

Fair enough, but people who aren't "haters" can also discuss it. The question was just asking whether we'd see a band if they weren't live, not specifically asking about Britney, that was just a preface as it's topical.

Well that's a fair point I suppose. I can make a full judgement then. From what I've seen though, she does more strutting and hand movements than actual dancing.

nope i wouldnt i would be rather peed off at that robbie at milton keynes performed live through a throat infection that near on had him puking on stage through singing and moving about all over the stage (he didnt) but then its what britney has always been like so her fans know this and happily pay money to see their idol lip syncing her way through it its cos her songs are so edited she wouldnt stand a chance singing live

HOWEVER, I do agree that although her confidence has been knocked an awful lot since her breakdown, I do at least think she should have attempted 'Everytime' live, and maybe centered the setlist around more ballads to prove she still has an amazing voice. And it's obvious she has because on For The Record, clips are shown of her in the recording studios and demos leaked in 2007 with no editing whatsoever were amazing. I think all she needs is a kick and she would be excellent live.

It was a general question. I didn't ask "How many of you would be happy to pay for concert tickets to go and see Britney mime? It was an extension to a story I found amusing.

Britney fans don't care if she mimes, $61,000,000 made in America alone on ONE leg proves this. Britney isn't known for having an 'amazing' voice, she's known for being a popstar i.e has catchy songs, hip dance moves and good looks. I'm not going to a Britney show for Mariah Carey live vocals, I go to see a spectacle and be entertained - that's what she's good at.
Obviously people who don't like Britney or are just against miming would say its wrong, and that's fair enough. But some people don't care.And Gary, don't judge on the YT clips. When I saw her dancing it was crisp, in-time and those videos did it no justice!
Now I'm leaving this thread because I'm expected to be attacked for having this opinion. ttyl.
I'd rather hear a singer hitting a couple of bum notes while performing live than hear a flawless rendition of the song at the expense of hearing it live.

On the other hand, if she can get away with selling them for a high price (which she does, cos she sells out), why would she go lower? People want to see her enough to pay the high prices.

Not really. The definition of a true fan is someone who sticks by the artist, and if some fans are willing to pay more than a $1,000 for a ticket when she mimes - well that screams true fan to me.

Absolutely, I do. I personally love Britney Spears as a performer because I love the hype at her concerta and the hype surrounding her as a superstar, I think she has a kind of stage presence that no other performer these days can match, & I also love her concerts because I love how dedicate her fan base were and how warm everybody was to each other. I absolutely think it's fair and cannot fault her concert last night.

I think this is a bit of an unfair point to make actually.
I mean it makes sense that an artist who mimes has a higher priced ticket because they have to employ more dancers, and generally but on a much bigger show to compensate for them miming.

And Girth, honestly, I attended also and heard no boos either, if anything the crowd cheered even more because she messed up. Either way there is always going to be conflicting opinions, it's not always at fault of the Britney fans. Change the record.

Artists put huge ticket prices because they know the fans will buy them. Take That are decent and only charge about 50 pounds for a huge production(this tour cost them 10 million) but fans compensate by going to many shows rather than 1 highly priced one.

If she is advertising her shows as "live" and yet she is not singing live (she is famous for being a singer is she not?) then her fans are getting ripped off. Bottom line. I fail to see why people would spend over £50 to hear the studio version of a tune. Performing LIVE should mean that she sings LIVE, not miming to some bullshit backing track.

I thought when concerts we're advertised as live it meant you were seeing them live, like RIGHT THERE, in the flesh, I didn't think it meant live vocals, I may be wrong though. But they're not getting ripped off though, and it is a point that has been raised many times before, if people outside of her fan base seem to be such experts on her miming, obviously her fans know that she mimes, therefore they're not getting ripped off.

It's not a studio version. Britney records 'playback' which is a new version made to sound live. Many other artists do it too, even ones who don't mime. It's for better effect.

I'd pay to see her if I had the money - singing's only one aspect of her performance. I'd expect it from other musicians, but with her...there's an exception for some reason.
And I don't understand the argument "she shouldn't tour, shouldn't charge that much". The fans aren't being ripped off, they're conscientously and willingly buying the tickets for a reason, because they're fans.

I'm not going to continue with this thread as everyone's posts are just getting recycled and the same points are going around and around. In my opinion, the fans are NOT being ripped off as they KNOW to expect lip syncing and not live vocals, they go to see a spectacle, to be entertained and that's what Britney does. I even said in an earlier post that it's obvious she still has a pretty amazing unique voice and I think she should have attempted 'Everytime' live despite her confidence being hugely knocked over the past few years. Even if they get labelled as appreciating hype over talent, I would very much rather go see an, in some people's opinions, 'overpriced' show with lots of dancing, movement and entertainment than a drab, cheap show with live vocals, yet no stage presence, hype or feeling whatsoever. I know my opinion may seem biased because I am a Britney Spears fan, but this topic is purely down to preference, would you rather see a show with on-point vocals and a calm atmosphere? Or a show with lip syncing, but dancing, tricks and an epic hype?
I do respect people's opinions on that she is famous for being a singer and that she should sing, but she has sung many songs live at previous tours, this tour is purely going ahead to get her back out there interacting with the public, and one bad live song would get her SLAMMED and knock her confidence big time.
I'm glad this thread has not resorted to an argument though, and has not created any hard feelings, but I am just tired, in general being subconciously degraded because I'd much rather go see an artist mime than sing live.

I think this is a bit of an unfair point to make actually.
I mean it makes sense that an artist who mimes has a higher priced ticket because they have to employ more dancers, and generally but on a much bigger show to compensate for them miming.
Its a perfectly fair point. As Princess has already pointed out Take That charged about the same price for a huge production AND they sung live. A Take That ticket would be worth a lot more than a Britney ticket and a TT concert would be an all round better experience. Singing live adds to the experience.

Did I call her a *****? Nope. Also, Britney married Kevin Federline, shaved her hair off, and had a complete meltdown. Madonna never did any of these things. The fact that she's been going for so long adds to her credibility and success. First off, you don't go to a Britney concert to hear her sing, you go to a Britney concert to see her perform.. any fan knows that.
I went to see her last week and she was amazing. I was quite disappointed that she didn't at least sing Everytime live, as it's a ballad but she's been through a lot during the last few years and maybe she just needs a bit more confidence to start singing some songs live like she used to.

Have not read the entire thread but from what I gather, she is a multi talent, international celebrity icon, and all around pop virtuoso.
Then I read that singing one song wrong on her tour live could potentialy knock her confidence.
Contrast, much? What sort of artist has their confidence knocked by a **** performance to the point where they just dont bother singing live for a while for ***** and giggles?
And why on earth do some people have the assumption in this thread that to be singing for real you have to be crooning on a stool under a spotlight? Most artists sing live. Dancing, pyrotechnics, you name it. Most of them still manage to sing live.
I think Britney might be in the wrong business. I think the fact that by seeing her live without her main prime selling point, the voice, your essentialy just buying into a brand image and stage show not attributed to her own personal talent, but to a team of hundreds of stage designers, marketing people and various other personas. And theirs no shame in that?
Really, I cant see the point.
