Is there any chance of having the bed wetter to come stay for a couple of weeks uninterrupted in the summer holidays or is the mum quite strict with how much time they spend together? Because if you could even get them doing it for a fortnight it might make a difference... man that's so rubbish and I relate so much to your step kid - it was THE worst thing and it happened every single morning and I swear it's the root of so many of my confidence issues as an adult; I couldn't go to sleepovers when I was a kid or anything, it was so embarrassing and so awful! I wish I could help!!

Cut her out, let her see the grandkids she wants to see under supervision by all means but don't put the 8 year old through any more time with her.

2) I'm nearly 24 and I'd more or less say that I'm being bullied by my mum. I decided to cut her out of my life for the most part and keep our communications limited to either me going home to visit or speaking on the phone. Even then a lot of the time it ends in arguments and her playing the victim while being horrible to me. I watched her do the same things with my older brother and he ended up choosing his wife over our mum and I fully applaud him for doing that - Gav can see what his mum is doing to his kids and it's putting him in an awful position. Whether she's just a horrible old bitch or if she's going through a difficult time and taking it out on the bedwetter because they're an easy target, I don't know, but I do know that Gav, like my older brother, has a pretty clear choice to make - protect his kids from a nasty environment or let his mum add to his kid's existing problems.

I too had to wear nappies all the time and every morning went through the daily shame of stripping my bedsheets and being belittled by my mum for what had happened... I wasn't doing it on purpose!! So yeah, advice there that might be of some use to you, it'll no doubt be difficult for you all but probably not too dissimilar to checking on the newborns in the middle of the night - monitor the 8 year old and establish when it is roughly they're wetting the bed and start waking them up every night before that time hits and guide them to the toilet and help them train their body to start associating needing to pee with waking up and going to the toilet. I realise this'll involve a joint effort with the mum and it'll be difficult but it's how my parents helped me and I'm now proud to say I no longer wet the bed in my sleep...

1) I was a chronic bed wetter until I was about 9 years old and even to this day I'm convinced I have undiagnosed bladder problems - I was taken for x rays and all sorts as a kid and they never diagnosed me with anything but I'm forever 'breaking the seal' - today I had a large coffee and I must have gone for a pee about 10 times at work as a result, it's mental... my parents ended up having to get up in the middle of the night every night to wake me up and take me to the toilet and literally help me train my bladder and body clock to sync up so that I didn't pee myself in my sleep and that I would wake up when my body needed to relieve itself and go pee in the middle of the night like a normal person.
