I mean I've sadly witnessed the police attend a number of "assaults" that were more accurately mutual fights that escalated, and they definitely don't barge in pointing fingers until they've asked bystanders what actually happened.

That’s how it should be.

I think the ‘always believe the accuser’ thing is not from the police but more a current social media trend.People want to look like they’re on the ‘right’ side.

With things like the Covington Catholic school and now this, you'd think the media would be more careful before peddling fake news...

It's not fake news though, the incident actually happened, whether it was a set up or not is another matter (which should also be reported about)

Is there an 'always believe the accuser' trend?

Isn't it more of a 'take all accusations seriously and investigate'?

There are people in this thread still acting like they don't know what happened here, or even more ridiculously, still trying to malign the people who expressed skepticism initially. This is what happens when you adhere to an ideology. Any ideology is going to diverge from reality sooner or later, causing this type of cognitive dissonance where people can't accept reality.

You need to brush up on what constitutes fake news before you try to brand stories with that label.

The Covington story wasn't as initially painted, and this one seems to have been orchestrated by Jussie himself. They're pushing the boundaries for true news quite a bit tbh

They are developing stories, not fake news.

Fake news is something that's completely false that is published to push an agenda or garner a reaction. Smollet was actually attacked, it's just not known whether or not he orchestrated it or not.

Oliver_W 19-02-2019 04:29 PM

How do we know he was attacked, there's no evidence for this. For all we know, his two friends might have given him the mild bruises in his apartment, and then met him at the CCTV blindspot to hand him the rope.

Still not fake news no matter how hard you try to make it so. Whether it was a fake attack or not, it's still an attack. People aren't questioning it happened, people are questioning whether it was orchestrated or not.

It's a developing story.

Chicago Police now want to Interview Him
again.

Nothing, I just saw it and thought it was funny, and someone upthread questioned what kind of name "Jussie" is.

Firewire 20-02-2019 09:20 PM

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago detectives suspect that “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett filed a false police report when he said he was the victim of a racist, homophobic attack in downtown Chicago late last month, a police official said Wednesday.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi also said Wednesday that detectives and two brothers who were earlier deemed suspects in the Jan. 29 attack were testifying before a grand jury.

Smollett’s attorneys, Todd Pugh and Victor P. Henderson, met with prosecutors and police earlier Wednesday afternoon. It’s unknown what was discussed or whether Smollett attended the meeting. The attorneys didn’t reply to requests seeking comment.
