Police have confirmed that a rope was put around Empire star Jussie Smollett's neck when he was attacked in Chicago.

Cops have told TMZ that the assault was caught on a building surveillance camera.

The black, gay actor, who plays Jamal Lyon in the programme, was brutally assaulted by two men in what is believed to have been a homophobic and racist attack.

Jussie was walking in Chicago at 2am when he was allegedly beaten by two men who put his head in a noose and screamed "This is MAGA country".

Sources close to the star said he had arrived in Chicago from New York late on Monday night and decided to head out at 2am to get some food.

It's said he'd gone into a Subway store and when he walked out, someone shouted: "Aren't you that ********t Empire n****r?"

The two men, who were both wearing ski masks, are said to have viciously attacked Jussie, beating him so badly that he fractured a rib.

Jussie was taken to Northwestern Memorial hospital where he was treated and discharged the following morning.

Now, a woman who lives in Jussie's apartment building told police she saw a suspicious man, who she said looked like a "redneck", loitering outside the entrance

The unnamed woman told the site she left the building at 12.30am to take her dogs out and saw a man near the door, pacing between the parking garage and the entrance.

She said he looked agitated and was smoking a cigarette, adding that he looked "out of place"

The woman described the man as white and with scruff on his face and said he was wearing a blue winter beanie, blue zip-up sweatshirt with a hood and blue jeans that were too short, exposing "thick, grey hunting socks" with camel-coloured dress shoes.

She also said that she noticed what appeared to be a rope or a clotheslines, made of white and blue material, sticking out from the bottom of his sweatshirt.

The woman said the man was staring at another man standing outside another entrance to the building about 300 feet away.
She says she went back into the building after five minutes and woke up at 4am to go to the gym and noticed a lot of security.

She says the concierge told her about Jussie being attacked and she passed on what she had seen, with the staff member uring her to contact the police.

Police have released images of two persons of interest, but it is not known if one of them is the man the woman saw.

Officers had been checking footage of the area and say they have video of Jussie with rope draped around his neck as he walks through the lobby of his building.

Jeez Alf, what if this were a rape?. Would you want footage of the crime to believe it? He was hospitalised, the police have released that he was filmed with a rope round his neck. He was the victim of what sounds like a pretty awful and violent attack and you want footage? That's pretty grim

You've gotta be a complete knob to not believe this story or want real life footage to believe it when even police are confirming the attack based on evidence they have seen.

Not all evidence is posted public as it could be distressing.

Why has this guy and his manager refused to give police access to their phones? His manager has claimed that he heard the attack on the phone.

Healthy scepticism about extraordinary claims is good - but don't you think the police might have evidence the rope was forcibly used? If he'd just draped it around his neck we'd certainly hear about it.
