Pepe Reina Signs New Six-Year Contract: The Future Liverpool Captain?

Pepe Reina has finally agreed to a four year extension that will see his contract run until 2016, ensuring Liverpool have one of the very best 'keepers in the world for a long time to come.

It's testament to Reina's commitment to the club as the Spanish shot stopper makes his decision during what looks set to be an unusually poor season under the tenure of Rafael Benitez.

Quite possibly the first name on the team sheet, Reina has been the most consistent player at Anfield during this difficult campaign. When heads have dropped, the Spaniard is still doing all he can to rally his teammates and get them focused again.

The Madrid born 'keeper is highly respected in the dressing room, looked up to on the training ground by academy trainees. Even when Reina is on the bench, he can be seen encouraging the players with the commitment and vigour that makes him one of the best loved personalities on and off the field.

With Steven Gerrard nearing the end of his captaincy, there really could be no finer replacement than the current Liverpool goalkeeper. He has all the trademark leadership qualities necessary: the ever important consistency wanted from a captain, as well as the respect needed to direct his troops and have them running through walls for the cause.

Quite easily the best signing Rafael Benitez has made since taking charge. The 27-year-old is about to hit the peak of his career and the new long term £80,000 a week contract ensures Pepe Reina's best years are seen at Anfield.

Agent dismisses Serie A link for Arsenal fullback Sagna

The agent of Arsenal fullback Bacary Sagna has dismissed talk of a summer move to Serie A.

The France international has been linked with Juventus and Roma this month.

"Sagna is very well at Arsenal and I don't think right now there may be a club willing to make an important offer for the player," Christophe Mongai told Calciomercato.it.

"If not, in front of a valid proposal, Arsenal could think about it.

"Roma and Juventus? Nobody has called me from Italy."

Arsenal’s Under 18’s begin their difficult final run in tomorrow with the longest trip in the League, to Wales to face Cardiff City. With an 11 game unbeaten run, Steve Bould’s side have remained consistent where his team selection hasn’t. Injuries and Reserve team duty has depleted the resources on various occasions this season, opening the door for some of the starlets of the future to make an early mark. One player who looks to be taking advantage of the game time is promising midfielder Jamie Edge.

A summer signing from Cheltenham Town in a protracted transfer saga, Edge began his career with Arsenal in the Under 16’s where he always looked ready for a step up to the next level. Form at Under 18 level has been difficult to come by, with injuries scuppering the potential to put together a string of games. After last weekend’s excellent performance against Milton Keynes Dons, Jamie is showing real signs that he is beginning to settle down to life with the Gunners and show his real qualities.

Jamie started on the right of a three man midfield and turned in a typically hard working and stylish performance. The delightful back heel to release Oğuzhan Özyakup for Benik Afobe’s second goal showed exactly why Liam Brady was happy to splash out £100,000 for his services. Throughout the game, the 16-year-old chased, hassled and fought for every ball in a dominant box-to-box role. Quiet but effective is the ultimate way of describing this hard working talent.

Whether Bould feels Edge is ready for a tough game such as Cardiff City, we’ll find out tomorrow. Home games are easier to show off his technical talents, yet at well over 6 foot, a physical away game would be no problem for the former Manchester United trialist.

With such a large price tag and little to show for it so far, many will be critical of Jamie Edge, but as he begins to settle in, the signs certainly look good that Arsenal have another promising and versatile prospect on their hands.

Armand Traore released an official statement on the Arsenal website dismissing suggestions he was looking for a summer move to Paris Saint Germain.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been given the green light to make a summer move for Juventus midfielder Felipe Melo after the Brazilian combative midfielder responded to criticism over his form by criticising the Turin fans.

Juventus lost 4-1 to Fulham to crash out of the Europa League with Melo coming under intense scrutiny from fans of the Old Lady. The big summer signing from Fiorentina has struggled to find the form that persuaded Juve chiefs to invest a reported £15 million in the player, with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger ready and waiting to snap up Melo at a bargain price.

Arsenal failed last summer in their attempts to snap up the 26-year-old with the player opting for a Serie A stay by switching from Fiorentina to Juventus. However, following a testing first season in Turin and heavy criticism in the media, Melo has been heavily tipped to cut short his stay with the bianconeri with several suitors lining up to register their interest, however Arsenal are sort to be the frontrunners for the Samba star's signature.

Melo told Football Italia: "I’ll continue to defend the Juventus jersey,”

“I’m not bothered about the fans. I’m paid to go and defend the Juve shirt on the pitch and that is exactly what I do.

“Perhaps our fans can learn from the example set by the Fulham supporters who continued to back their team even when they were losing.”

Melo could be sold in the summer along with fellow Brazilian born stars Amauri and Diego, who are also reportedly unsettled with life at Juventus. Arsene Wenger, live on French TV last month could not rule out making another move a move for the Brazilian following his unsuccessful spell at the Old Lady. Regarding the future of Melo Juve chief Blanc said before the Fulham fixture:

"Felipe Melo will remain with us but we won't be commenting further on any future dealings."

I’m sure Harry Redknapp will be interested to hear the comments of his Moroccan playmaker Adel Taarabt who says: “I don’t want to go back to Tottenham.”

Currently enjoying his loan spell with QPR, the man once dubbed ‘the new Zidane’ also admits it was a ‘big mistake’ going to Spurs in the first place.

He wishes he’d gone to Arsenal when he had the chance and reflects: “I was going to go to Arsenal and Comolli was there with Wenger. “But he went to Tottenham so I went there. That was a big mistake for me.

"My friends in England - like Armand Traore and Abou Diaby at Arsenal - told me Tottenham were not the right fit for me.

"The big mistake was to sign for Tottenham and not go to another club when I first came over."

Taarabt insists Redknapp believes in his ability - but after failing to impress at Spurs he does not want to return following his loan with QPR.

"Juande Ramos didn't know me at all and I had one bad performance when we lost 4-1 to Newcastle and after that he never gave me my chance," he continued.

"Harry Redknapp told me I was a fantastic player with a big talent but he wanted me to go to the Championship, play some games and then come back to play for him. But I don't want to go back to Tottenham."
