Reid and Delph focus of Bluebirds boss Jones’ spying mission
Jan 4 2010 by Terry Phillips, South Wales Echo Comments (2) Recommend (1) DAVE Jones went on a Villa Park spying mission after Cardiff City’s FA Cup tie at Bristol City was postponed. The Bluebirds manager had talks with chairman Peter Ridsdale about transfer targets before setting off to watch Villa beat Blackburn Rovers 3-1 in the third round. The Echo understands that Blackburn’s Steven Reid and Villa youngster Fabian Delph are both on Jones’ radar as possible loan signings. Reid, the Republic of Ireland international, underlined his progress after long-term injury problems and proved his fitness with a 90-minute display. Former Leeds ace Delph also shone in a rare first-team outing before going off ill at half-time, to be replaced by Steve Sidwell. Rovers were down to 10 players when they had El Hadji Diouf sent off during the first half and Reid’s fitness was tested to the full. Ridsdale was also due to take in an FA Cup match and left Ashton Gate with the intention of going to the Wigan-Hull tie, where Jason Koumas was among the players involved. Jones has already made a couple of enquiries about Koumas, but the former Welsh international is not keen to drop down to the Championship from the Premier League. Reid would be an ideal signing for City if the Bluebirds can persuade Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce to loan him out. The 28-year-old joined Queens Park Rangers for a month, returning during December having made only two appearances for the London club. Jones needs midfield players who can step in and do a job immediately and Reid certainly went a long way towards proving that by completing the 90 minutes at Villa. He has only played in cup-ties for Blackburn this season and Allardyce might welcome the chance to send him out to build up match fitness. Delph went off feeling unwell, but that is not a long-term issue and the key for Jones with the Yorkshireman is whether Martin O’Neill would allow him out on loan. Villa have a two-legged Carling Cup semi-final this month, again against Blackburn, and O’Neill may want the youngster involved. “The manager was out watching players on Saturday and we fully intend to strengthen the playing squad as soon as possible,” promised club chairman Ridsdale. “Dave has given me a list of players who would fit the bill and we are working on that.” More than 10,000 Bluebirds fans have snapped up season tickets for 2010-11 to hand Jones a £3m January war chest. “The chairman has promised that all the money that comes in will go to bringing in players,” Jones said last week. “Up to £3m has been mentioned and if that’s the case we could do a lot of damage with that. “For the first time since I have been here we are able to push on during the January transfer window.” Cardiff hope to bring in at least one player, possibly two, in time for Saturday’s Championship home game with Blackpool. With Stephen McPhail (thigh) and Gavin Rae (broken fingers) now ruled out by injury and Riccy Scimeca retired, the Bluebirds have big issues through central midfield. Joe Ledley is playing on despite a problem with his hips and will have benefited from the rest provided by the postponement of the FA Cup tie at Ashton Gate. The real loser from that postponement was teenage midfielder Aaron Wildig, who looked set for a first full-team debut. Now, though, City will hopefully have new players available for Saturday. If they are out of the Premier League on loan then it is probable they won’t be able to play in the rescheduled FA Cup tie tomorrow week – and that could hand Wildig his chance after all. |
By the looks of it Coyle is indeed going to Bolton.

Arsenal youngster Fran Merida is thought to have snubbed a new deal with the Gunners in favour of signing for Atletico Madrid.
Reports from Spain on Wednesday indicate that the 19-year-old has decided to sign a five-year deal with the La Liga side rather than stay at the Emirates Stadium. The Spaniard had initially agreed a new five-year contract with Arsenal towards the end of last year but never put pen-to-paper on the deal and will now join up with Atletico in the summer, the club he has supported all his life. I said big things for him, he would be quality, leaving arsenal for a struggling team.. he wont be. |
Reports today suggest that two of the Premier League big guns will move for 23-year-old Porto striker Hulk. The Brazilian forward has a rumoured release clause of nearly €100 million but a more realistic sum of £15-20 million would surely tempt Porto to sell.
I hope not hes not very good. |
Injured striker Nicklas Bendtner targets Bolton match to make Arsenal return
Injured striker Nicklas Bendtner hopes to make his long-awaited return to first-team action when Arsenal travel to Bolton in the Barclays Premier League on January 17. The Denmark international has been out of action for over two months, after picking up a recurrence of a groin injury during the Gunners 3-0 win over north-London rivals Tottenham at the Emirates in October. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had hoped to have Bendtner available for action at the start of the new year, but the hitman's return has been blighted by a number of problems. |
Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale has revealed that Arsenal are tracking Bluebirds £4m-rated defender Adam Matthews.
The 17-year-old has impressed this season in the Championship, making 14 appearances for the Welsh club and scoring one goal as they push for promotion. Matthews' form has now attracted the attention of Arsenal who are keen to sign yet another Cardiff youngster after capturing former Bluebird Aaron Ramsey 18 months ago. Is he good? Chels? |
