It's the other way around, really. It's popular because it's there. It's a common misconception to think that the public controls the charts and what 'popular' music is, but really they don't in most cases. It's handed down to them like any other product and they consume it.

You could probably try out a lot of bands and genres who wouldn't normally be 'chart' in the same positions and with the same level of exposure and I bet you people will start to like it with sheer repetition.

They like it because it's popular. It's popular because it's in the charts. The whole pop industry is like an end unto itself.

What a typically intelligent debate the Wright Show have there. Disgusting show. Anyway, charts are 80% crap.

It doesn't matter how old you are to like a certain type of music. I know 15 year olds who love Metallica and Iron Maiden (average age around 50), and loads of young people are rediscovering the Beatles (Paul McCartney is 67 and Ringo Starr is 70), and Rolling Stones are in their 60s. Madonna is 52 this year, and Michael Jackson was 50. I have no difficulty in enjoying a range of music from opera to pop, from heavy metal to soft rock, from classical to r&B, from reggae to rap. Great music never dies, it has longevity and will always find new audiences in the future.

Music has no boundaries, and age is certainly not a consideration.

other people's musical taste disgusts me

yes exactly, I find it funny how some younger people think it's ok to say us oldies can't listen to younger music but I doubt they'd pleased if they were told that they couldn't listen to Madonna etc. cos they were too young:joker:

the test will be when we are old wrickles will we be talking about the number 1 of today or will the same people maddona george micheal frank s etc etc still be selling ? i think there will be some good music that comes through from today but the majority of it will be forgotton and thats where it belongs./

Good music has No age.

Marvin - Lets Get It On (1973)

Is a Cool Example.

Erm, first of all could I just say (admittedly as a 30 something) that being in your 30s is NOT old !!..and just because somebody in their 30s likes chart music, does not mean they "are trying to look young!"
Age has absolutely nothing to do with musical taste. I am 34 and listen to music from the moment I get up until I go to bed. I have a varied taste; some even may say strange... I love the "old" classics like Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Beatles, Neil Diamond, James Taylor etc but I also grew up during the 80s and 90s so I like (ok, maybe liked) the cheesy tunes of the Stock Aitken and Waterman era and then following that the Britpop years... The Stone Roses, Oasis (never liked Blur) and The Charlatans etc. I love a lot of chart music nowadays too and think there are a lot of fantastic bands around.. I don't feel too old for it though!
My ipod right now has almost every kind of music on it.. old music, new music, rock, rap, classical, pop, opera and probably more.. I do think there's a lot of p1sh in the charts but that's not an age thing; Justin Bieber just sucks... big time!!
