A couple of years ago, more bankruptcies were caused by healthcare costs than any other reason in the US. That was in a global meltdown. I don't know how those figures stack up today, but I'd guess they'd still be pretty similar.

The right wing in America even held up a bill to provide ongoing healthcare to the first responders on 9/11. People who are dying because of the toxic environment they faced on that day.

Nothing is free in America. Even basic human rights and dignity.

I am aware of that, but thanks.

The psychological aspect is one issue, however the percentage affected by that will be nothing in comparison to the percentage who just overeat and don't exercise.

I've lived in a couple of places in the USA and even though they have massive portions my weight didn't change at all while I was there. And it's not like I can eat anything I like and not put on weight. I still say if you are psychologically prone to overeat, no amount of portion control will encourage you to cut down, you'll just eat more portions.

Is everyone prone to overeating in america then?
Do they all have pyschological issues? If I ask for a ham sandwich I want a slice of ham between 2 slices of bread.
Not half a pig in a 6ft baguette dipped in gravy....

Not sure where you're going with that.

It's a statement, it's not going anywhere.
Do you have a response to it?

No, I do not think all Americans overeat. I'm not sure that really needed answering though.

Just because big portions are served doesn't mean everyone eats like a pig. So long as you expend more calories than you take in you can eat what you like. And having one large portion of something a day is preferable to eating five packets of biscuits, half a loaf of toast with butter, some crisps, lots of chocolate, a takeaway and several cans of beer. Which is the kid of diet a lot of fat people have.

Suppy and demand, if people didn't want mega meals then they wouldn't provide them.
Establishments would be saving themselves a fortune too if they didn't pander to the overeaters. Let them go out and buy more food if thats what they want to do, businesses don't have a duty of care to chubbers :)
And I didn't say ALL Americans overeat did I?
Cheers for the nutritional info, appreciated.

No, you didn't say all American overeat, you asked me whether they do. You said "Is everyone prone to overeating in america then?"

If you ever go to the USA you will see that not all outlets serve their meals in buckets. If you eat at burger joints and fast food outlets then you will be overwhelmed with food. But then, not everyone eats fast food every day. The only people responsible for their obesity is the obese person themselves, regardless of portion size.

I know what I said livia thankyou. I have seen the food served at these outlets, that is why I raised the issue in this thread.
To return to the initial point, yes I think that gastric bands to those who have exaused other avenues of weightloss should be made available.

Arista there are these amazing things called tellyboxes... You can see what it is like to visit other countries without actually going. ;)
I'm aware that not every single American is obese...haha.
If they were given the opportunity to have one I think most would take it. Even if say 2 thirds maintain a healthy weight due to this it will have a great impact on the US socially and economically.
It does need to be used with education to help them make healthy choices for themselves and their families in the future.
And if they have food issues then that may be easier to address post op, as those who still feel the need to gorge can be identified easier.
