eh, for all we know this has ruined his life anyway. Knowing he's killed someone just from one split second. I think 4 whole years of contemplating that is "enough". Of course the sentence length seems ridiculous next to manslaughter charges for those who've killed whilst drink-driving or acted completely reckless, but that's because drink-driving is far more stupid and preventable than a punch.
edit: what Nedusa said  I agree with that. |
Kinda on the fence on this one; I don't think 4 years is enough but then I do think 4 years is more than enough punishment for what clearly wasn't intended to kill someone... but again, I've been the victim of two random assaults just like this one, it scared me the first time and it scared me the second time that that could have been the end of my life. Just like that. Wasn't hurting anybody, wasn't even provoking anybody, was just attacked on two separate occasions by lunatics. Unusual for camera footage to capture the incident and so clearly too... which is a good thing, gives context and IMO is a good example of why CCTV monitoring is a positive thing.
Anyway, R.I.P. to the victim, I'm sorry that this happened to you and I hope that the man who ended your life never does anything like this ever again. |
Livia is right as to the sentencing of manslaughter and therefore the constraints as to what sentence can be given.
The guy didn't punch the victim with the intention of causing him to die, that is why this was manslaughter and not murder. I personally agree too with Lee, I think it was who said, why do people feel the need to use their fists. I really don't understand that at all. What I find really bad in this case was the guy who hit the victim just walking off and leaving him there. |
If he can kill someone with one punch, he would be pretty valuable on the olympic boxing team, so I can understand the lenient sentence to make sure he gets out in time for the next olympics.

I agree that manslaughter sentences should be higher...especially when the attack was unprovoked and not some form of self defense or something. Even if you didnt plan to kill the person, you still did  |
I live 5 minutes from there literally - I recognise the guy as he was always in the area walking down the street
He deserves more than four years :( |

I think the sentence is definitely too light, I can accept that he obviously didn't intend to kill him but idiots like him should realise that one punch can be all it takes to kill another person, cases of it are more common than might be thought. If he's the type of person who will go around punching someone full on in the head over a petty disagreement then it's no wonder that one of those times the victim might end up with more than a bloody nose or a bit of a bruise to show for it, he's obviously just an all round asshole, not someone who's committed just a one off mistake or an accident. Like Lee and Joey said, this can easily end up the consequence when people feel their fists are the way to end any disagreements |

The more I look at this the more I think this guy needs to go away for a very long time.
If you look at the CCTV footage he is not even involved in the verbal exchange , he just decides with a clear head to knock this poor blokes head off. He is far bigger and far younger and his attack is so unprovoked that it suggests this person is suffering from some sort of serious mental defect for which he responds with violence against strangers. This person needs to be removed from society until he can prove he is not a danger to anyone. I for one would like to see more than just a prison sentence , I would like to see him undergo treatment for mental illness and all that that entails. 5 yrs , 10yrs whatever it takes to convert this violent thug back into a normal member of Society.
