But they're not in jail on the charges of 'causing a natural disaster', the charges are obscenity, and you can be charged for pretty similar in the UK

The fact that some people do think the two things are linked - well shock horror, not everyone thinks as most Westerners do, different cultures have different belief systms, it doesn't do much good taking an attitude of 'those silly little tribal people should get over themselves'. If you're not comfortable with a belief that - though alien to us - is deeply held and embedded in their society then there's not much point in visiting in the first place. And if it does result in their jailing then there is not much point in our finger wagging and tutting. Politely requesting that they are met with clemency fine; demanding their release shouting that it's based on nothing more than 'fairies' and 'nonsense' - not so fine

user104658 11-06-2015 10:57 AM

It IS based on fairies and nonsense though, and of course there's a point in visiting the place. The world is stunning. It's stunning with or without stupid people and their backwards beliefs. To reiterate, again, what they did was stupid. It is not stupid enough to warrant being locked up or having their safety threatened. Anywhere.

MTVN 11-06-2015 10:59 AM

I don't think you are cut out for international diplomacy TS :inamood:

The world is stunning I agree but there is more to appreciate than its geography and architecture

I appreciate what you're saying about what helps them (being humble etc. Etc.) and if I was a lawyer or diplomat representing them I might employ a different tactic, feign acceptance of their juvenile beliefs, and what not.

However I am neither of those things and I doubt (though can't be sure I suppose) that the Malaysian authorities aren't on TiBB. They probably think that the Internet is the work of Abaddon and that browsing forums may cause a terrible hurricane the likes of which has never before been witnessed.

smudgie 11-06-2015 11:24 AM

Silly beggars.

People do stupid and disrespectful things, well then they have to be prepared for the consequences.
I am not saying lock them up, but that is up to the law of that land I suppose.
Perhaps a public apology showing some genuine remorse and then a lifetime ban from the country would do the job.
Depends how deep the feelings go for the Malaysian people and how offended they are.

Someone owns Westminster abbey, as far as I know nobody owns a mountain.

Yes her being naked caused an earthquake. We all have different cultures it seems put apparently politicians being lying ***** is a universal thing.

Kizzy 11-06-2015 01:22 PM

Well they don't, it's just people laying claim to things and imposing rules in the name of religion again.
Locking up innocent people does no good.

Jack_ 11-06-2015 01:43 PM

People should be able to get naked wherever they want (with very few exceptions) so long as they aren't harassing any other person without their consent in the process.

Regardless, I'm with Toy Soldier, arresting them for this is utterly ridiculous.

Not really the point, its about respecting cultures regardless of who owns what

Young people travelling to far-flung places need to be a little more grown up and aware of their surroundings Everywhere is not Ibiza. In some places you have to behave a certain way - your actual life may depend on it. And really, if that's not understood they should stay at home. And ridiculing people's religious beliefs because you think it's a bit silly will cut no ice in a prison cell, and don't bother calling the embassy to dig you out because they won't help you.

So Lock That Bitch Up

Crimson Dynamo 11-06-2015 01:53 PM

Whilst I agree that when in Rome etc I heard that the fuss is more about politics in that part of the world than fuss, if that makes sense.

The locals should be rounded up and told about plate tectonics. thick twats

I feel sure this young woman wouldn't have got her kit off in Mecca or in Medina. Have some respect for other cultures or stay at home.

Yes I accept that all of this is accurate, however, that doesn't make it right nor stop it from being utterly ludicrous. I have always been and will always be of the opinion that stupid things are not made any less stupid by the mere fact of being believed by lots of people.

Unless it's something that you yourself believe in, of course. Then everyone else must accept it as right even if they think it's stupid. If hundreds of thousands of people believe something and you think it's stupid, you don't have the right to override their feelings with yours.

People of other cultures have foibles, customs and idiosyncrasies and if you want to travel to their country and experience them, then be respectful of those people. If not, stay at home.
