Default Malaysia : British Girl arrested for doing a Naked Selfie on Sacred Mountain

[A few days later, a 5.9-magnitude
earthquake struck nearby and
killed 18 climbers – prompting
one of Malaysia's most senior
politicians to say that the
tourists' behaviour was to blame.

Oh yes. Let's start locking kids up because people are superstitious. Next step: hanging people for putting an umbrella up indoors.

People never stop banging on about people coming here and respecting our traditions, should we not show the same respect abroad even if we don't believe in it? This would be the equivalent of stripping off in Westminster abbey

No it wouldn't, in Westminster abbey there would probably be other people around which would make it public indecency. If someone stripped off in Westminster abbey when no one was around other than their friends, it shouldn't be any sort of a problem at all. On a personal note, I would be quite pleased if the entire world showed up to strip down and defecate on Westminster abbey's doorstep, but that's another thread for another day.

The mountain isn't "sacred", they sure as **** didn't cause an earthquake, and whilst yes it's arrogant and immature to go travelling and act like idiots (which they were) there's a pretty massive chasm between that and it actually being illegal. Send them home, ban them from the country, whatever. Don't lock them up Ffs. I can see this going really badly and some backwater idiot hurting or killing one of them for angering the mountain gods.

On another hilarious note, apparently the stripping naked occurred weeks ago but the earthquake only happened after the pictures appeared on social media. Who knew that sacred mountain earthquake gods were on facebook?

Obviously it didn't cause the earthquake no one is suggesting that, but my point still stands about respect. If it emerged someone stripped in the Abbey there would be public outrage make no mistake I doubt very much they will be detained for long at any rate

Like I said, I agree that it's arrogant and immature but the appropriate response would be to ban them from returning to the country, surely. Not to pander to local superstitions (the politicians doing this should be locked up IMO, I don't believe for a second that the people in power there actually believe any of the mountain god twaddle) by suggesting that they are responsible for deaths. Like I said, I can easily see this going horribly and one of them being hurt or worse by some superstitious vigilante.

If you can't respect other people's customs and traditions you have no right having a passport. To say I'm entitled because I think your religion is bullsh1t is ignorant. Go and enjoy other cultures, go and see the world, but don't impose your drunkenness and your nakedness on other people because you feel you can.

Like I said, send them home, ban them from the country. That would be appropriate. Locking naive young people up and potentially endangering them by suggesting that they have effectively committed manslaughter, because they angered fictional mountain deities, is absolutely not the appropriate response.

I agree with Girth, Ban them from the country but a prison sentence is dumb, especially when the only reason this story got traction is because of some moron politician decided to scapegoat them for an earthquake.

I think it's hard for us - as a secular country which is generally religiously apathetic these days - to appreciate the depth of feeling that could be had over this incident. Jail would not seem inappropriate to a lot of the local population for completely disrespecting one of their most sacred spots where spirits are supposed to go to rest. Part of the appeal of visiting places like this is surely the longevity and resilience of local customs and beliefs - don't be surprised if those then turn against you if you show no respect for them. Mind you even though we are less religious I still would expect a fair amount of outrage if - like Cherie said - someone did this on Westminster Abbey or if someone did it in a graveyard. Respecting the dead is pretty universal. And as for blaming it for the earthquake, well we have had councillors in this country claim that storms and floods should be blamed on gay people..

Frankly... if a group of foreign students came here and got naked in a graveyard, then were accused of causing a natural disaster and put in prison, I would be ****ing horrified.

Again though it seems like people can't separate a feeling of "that was stupid / that is wrong" and "PUT THEM IN JAIL!!11!1!".

No one is arguing that it was a good idea or that they aren't idiots. No one is arguing against the fact that they disrespected local culture and it's wrong to do so, or that they would be quite justified in saying "please never darken our doorstep again". All of that is totally valid. They're a bunch of young people who did something stupid, arrogant and naive and I could even bring myself to agree with Livia that when they get home, they should have their passports locked away until they can be trusted not to be twats.

All fine.

Jailing them for angering fairies and invoking the wrath of some non-existant yet apparently exceptionally moody bastard god... essentially accusing them of being guilty of causing a number of deaths... is not fine. It's ****ing nonsense, and just because it's in a country that still widely believes in said ****ing nonsense, does not make it acceptable.
