I agree Clootie. One of those with no regard for the Past or the Future, just the Here and Now.

That's how it came across to me anyway. And I find it hard to believe that even Jackson wouldn't have known about her.

This was my initial thought too

The effects of her abhorrent legacy are still being felt today and we're not in any fit state whatsoever so in fact history would say the opposite

Only those south of Oxford, on middle incomes and who weren't a labourer think Thatcher was anything other than one of, if not the worst PM we've ever had

Northern Monkey 19-07-2016 06:10 PM

It was'nt sexist in any way:shrug:
It was either a question or statement of fact.He did'nt follow it with anything derogatory.I see no issue.

Agree with that. There is still alot of unemployment in many of the mining towns in the north and Wales.

To be fair to her, people prospered more then ever before under her premiership.

Before she came in, lot's of household's still had outside toilets, no household had more than one television, hardly any household had a three piece suite, and most people still went to the launderette, because they didn't have washing machines or tumble dryers, nobody had computers, games consoles

By the end of her premiership, all households had inside toilets and bathrooms, most households had a television in every room, most household now had a three piece suite, and most households had washing machines, tumble dryers, dish-washers, microwave oven, games consoles.

So we did prosper under her.

The problem with the philosophy of 'a rising tide lifts all boats' is the failure to acknowledge that not everyone has a boat in the first place. When you fail to focus on equality of opportunity, you rig the system in favour of those who already have a platform upon which to start.

Yes, more people may have acquired material possessions under her premiership but that is one of the only benefits of neoliberal economics. Offset that with the major job losses across the north, the systematic destruction of collectivised communities and the social problems like drug abuse and crime that inevitably followed and has never recovered - and it's not a pretty picture.

given that many on this forum experienced her premiership first hand and prospered, it is somewhat amusing to be told how crap she was by someone that wasn't even born then.

I was there and I didnt prosper. I think jacks post was quite accurate.

To call her a bad Prime Minister isnt true up until the poll tax fiasco she pretty much did what she wanted and without that I think she'd have been in charge till well into the 90's. She cant be unsuccesfull when she's changed an entire nation even if the changes were not for everyone or even a majority. She smashed two of the UK biggest industries in Steel and coal and changed the commercial emphasis from manufacturing to services. The effects can stil be seen today.

And I'm sure there'll be people on this forum whose lives and communities or the lives and communities of their family, friends and relatives were destroyed by her premiership, because they definitely exist (certainly outside of the perimeters I outlined to LT) and I'm sure in your wonderful everlong life you've met some of them - or perhaps not, I don't know.

But you continue to patronise people because of their age as if that's an accurate marker of someone's knowledge of a subject, and that reading and research isn't a thing. Perhaps you should try it yourself? It's ever so enlightening!

Just giving an example how people in this country prospered under Thatcher.

Before Thatcher, some people had to go round to watch the neighbours telly, if an event was on, because they couldn't afford a telly of their own, but by the end of Thatcher's time, all households had a telly in each room.

I know that's probably not a big deal to you, but to the people who lived it ,saw the difference.

So yes, I'm fooking serious treacle.
