I'm not excusing it because it actually is embarrassing on his behalf and it shows no intelligence but I don't believe he was shocked that a woman is pm because they are female. So there really isn't anything awful for not remembering/not knowing that stuff.

When he said it, I assumed he meant it in a sexist way, like it just came out without him thinking first, and he didn't say 'first' when he said it... it was only when Sam reacted to it that he said his comment was because he hadn't realised there was one before... but I actually think that was him trying to backtrack a sexist comment, rather than it necessarily being that he genuinely didn't know about Thatcher. That's how it came across to me anyway. And I find it hard to believe that even Jackson wouldn't have known about her.
