Making "social commentary" is no excuse for this, I mean really...

Tom4784 10-09-2020 06:28 PM

I remember the poster for this going viral a few weeks back. It's gross.

arista 10-09-2020 06:28 PM

Yes Oliver
I am Shocked that Ammi
is sticking up for Netflix, on this production.

bots 10-09-2020 06:30 PM

i won't be watching the film, but the context is always important, so i wouldn't rush to judgement on a clip

Shaun 10-09-2020 06:41 PM

There are audience members audibly booing and making rude gestures throughout the performance, I wouldn't say it really glamourises their performance at all. It's uncomfortable to watch though, as are child pageants.

...I didn’t ‘stick up’, Arista ...and can you imagine my shock that you’re saying that’s what I’m doing......I posted some reviews that are pretty good reviews of the film so I won’t go Twitter cancel crazy vibe, until I’ve seen the film and the whole context of it ...because from the few reviews I’ve read...it doesn’t seem to sexualise, so much as show how children can be sexualised in this digital age of social media etc...

...behave yourself, Arista, with your sticking up nonsense...I’m properly shook...

bots 10-09-2020 06:56 PM

*ammi starts cancel Arista twitter campaign*

...indeed I did say that...would it not be necessary to watch a movie before cancelling it, do you think...?...

Oliver_W 10-09-2020 07:05 PM

I wouldn't recommend watching that thing, you might end up on a government watchlist...

...the context of the movie from its reviews, Arista...your ‘judgement’ may be guided by social media ‘cancelling’ and that’s cool, but mine isn’t...

Cuties opened to positive critics' reviews in Sundance due to its succinct portrayal of a sensitive topic. The film focuses on the very private experiences of a young girl who has grown up in a traditional family but is seduced by the overtly sexualised "dance clique" that her friend runs. The film tries to critically analyse a media culture and society that pushes or inspires young and impressionable girls to sexualisation. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film "establishes its critical view of a culture that steers impressionable young girls toward the hyper-sexualization of their bodies". Screen Daily also felt that the film was for mature audiences and "explicitly designed to shock mature audiences into contemplation of today's destruction of innocence".
Originally titled Mignonnes, the largely well-received French-language film premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, won the World Cinema Dramatic Directing Award. If anything, the film appears to be a comment on the hyper-sexualisation of children, the very thing that critics are objecting to. It was well-received for its mature handling of hyper-sensitive topics.

Cuties, Netflix review: a provocative powder-keg for an age terrified of child sexuality

Articles like that don't help defend the movie tbh :joker:

A lot of the controversy could have been avoided if they went for the "Dawson Casting" approach.

The question should be is why is it allowed to happen in the first place? Not that its being aired as a TV show

user104658 11-09-2020 12:25 AM

Neh the more I see and read about this, the worse it gets. It doesn't matter if it's a well made film or what the message is; the content is horrendous visually and unquestionably exploitative of the child actors who are in the film, to such an extent that I'd call it negligent or even abusive. This should never have been allowed to be made using real child actors. Not in the name of art, nor anything else.

"Forget the moral panic – Netflix’s controversial French import is disturbing and risqué because that’s exactly what it aims to be"

...by using actual children to push a provocative conversation topic. Wow aren't those film makers edgy!!

Honestly I can only imagine that the people writing these articles haven't realised that the half naked (and apparently, there is partial nudity) children in the film are actual children who cannot possibly have known what they were making "for the adults to have a good ol' think about". Vile.

It’s a paedo’s dream dressed up as art, was it Slim posted a video a while back from some TV show where kids dressed up as adults and sang in the 80s, it’s as vile as that, for once Twitter is spot on

I have watched the first 30 minutes, the ‘story’ so far is very basic

What in the name of God was that! They can keep their arty farty 'social commentary'; I don't care what it is about, using children like that is just WRONG.

Netflix deserves this as do the ones who have made it.
