Whilst I agree that when in Rome etc I heard that the fuss is more about politics in that part of the world than fuss, if that makes sense.

The locals should be rounded up and told about plate tectonics. thick twats

Regardless, I'm with Toy Soldier, arresting them for this is utterly ridiculous.

I feel sure this young woman wouldn't have got her kit off in Mecca or in Medina. Have some respect for other cultures or stay at home.

And ridiculing people's religious beliefs because you think it's a bit silly will cut no ice in a prison cell, and don't bother calling the embassy to dig you out because they won't help you.

Yes I accept that all of this is accurate, however, that doesn't make it right nor stop it from being utterly ludicrous. I have always been and will always be of the opinion that stupid things are not made any less stupid by the mere fact of being believed by lots of people.

Unless it's something that you yourself believe in, of course. Then everyone else must accept it as right even if they think it's stupid. If hundreds of thousands of people believe something and you think it's stupid, you don't have the right to override their feelings with yours.

People of other cultures have foibles, customs and idiosyncrasies and if you want to travel to their country and experience them, then be respectful of those people. If not, stay at home.

Neh, I accept that people can have different beliefs but there surely has to be a line... And the idea that taking naked selfies can cause earthquakes leaves that line a speck in the distance. C'mon.

I'm not asking you to believe it, I don't believe it myself. But if they believe it, hey, it's their country... and that girl is a guest.

Vicky. 11-06-2015 02:50 PM

Idiot. You have to respect peoples beliefs and way of life really when you visit their country. When I went to Tunisia is was sweltering hot but the day we ventured out of the resort to go to the markets I had to cover up as walking around in shorts and stuff is seen as really disrespectful :S

Right but if a guest disrespected my house I'd ask them to leave and not to come back! I wouldn't lock them in a room or try to harm them...

Hold on a minute... Last I heard, Kirk was headed for your house to check you were OK. I haven't seen him around for a while... D:

Like, fully naked? Honestly you can't expect not to get in trouble... I don't agree with this whole 'always abide by the countrys rules' principle though, especially if the government is corrupt/fascist eg. in Nazi Germany.

...just silly and disrespectful but I'm sure that she'll be very respectful of different cultures in the future when she's travelling, probably saying that more religion/culture should be taught in schools, not less of it..(I'm joking TS..)...

...anyway, I thought a large part of things like Buddhism are forgiveness, kindness, compassion, joy and calm/balance so maybe those could be applied to her as well with this...

..it's not all Muslim Arista, Buddhism is the second largest religion there and multi-culture is very much promoted there as well, especially with young people.. she was dumb most certainly for doing what she did..and maybe through 'ignorance'..?.. but I doubt she'll do anything like that again...anyway the earthquake has already happened, the Gods have spoken and putting her in prison won't change that so maybe a little 'Buddha Law' as well if they want to encourage people to visit their beautiful country...

No one is arguing that it was a good idea or that they aren't idiots. No one is arguing against the fact that they disrespected local culture and it's wrong to do so, or that they would be quite justified in saying "please never darken our doorstep again". All of that is totally valid. They're a bunch of young people who did something stupid, arrogant and naive and I could even bring myself to agree with Livia that when they get home, they should have their passports locked away until they can be trusted not to be twats.

All fine.

Jailing them for angering fairies and invoking the wrath of some non-existant yet apparently exceptionally moody bastard god... essentially accusing them of being guilty of causing a number of deaths... is not fine. It's ****ing nonsense, and just because it's in a country that still widely believes in said ****ing nonsense, does not make it acceptable.

Well apparently the guide they were with was telling them not to strip off and actually pleading with them not to - but being Tory kids they told him to go to hell - so they deserve everything they get - bastard spoiled rich kids with no morals or thought for other people. -Bunch of turds

That's a good point actually, too harsh a punishment for this will have a hige impact on tourism in the country, surely.

Also surprised this Mountain God lark has been allowed to go so public if it is indeed a country with a Muslim government and large Muslim population. Allah being the "One True God" is a pretty huge deal in Islam, and worshipping or putting stock in any false deity (for example, mountain gods...) is really not part of the deal.

Kazanne 11-06-2015 07:23 PM

I just don't see why she needed to do it anyway, does she have a short memory or something.

Why would a Muslim country be incapable of having other faiths within it? Malaysia has always had a huge range of beliefs and that is particularly going to be the case in remote regions like this on Borneo

She was just Rushed into Court
The Police were in Swat type clothes.

Mark Stone (SkyNewsHD) the only Live Reporter
from the UK there Shouted "how are you"
but she was rushed fast
to stop any Locals attacking her.

When you travel to such places you need to use your common sense and the only way you can do that is by informing and understanding some of the odd customs and laws.

Taking half a dozen packets of chewing gum into Singapore can land you a year in jail and you could be landed with a hefty fine if you sipped some water from a bottle on any of there metro systems.

Its the same in Dubai or the United Arab Emirates. During Ramadan if you are caught eating within a public space you can be fined and even jailed.

Don't walk into any Eastern temple without covering your shoulders and if you have any visible tattoos that depict Buddhism, don't let anyone see those tattoos whilst in Sri Lanka www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-27107857

Accidentally walk onto someone else's land in many American states and you could be legally shot dead. 'Castle Law' permits land owners to shoot, maim or kill trespasses without any legal restraints.

If you accidentally drop your money in Thailand, whatever you do, don't step on it. stepping on the kings head is seen as sacrilege and could land you in jail.

Understand the customs and be a respectful traveller.
