It's a television game show-the producers probably selected the housemates on the basis of their potential (repeat potential) entertainment value, more than on the basis of ethnicity.
I think the OP has a hidden agenda here.

is that the entertainment and potential youre talking about?
Yes because producers can't tell how housemates will perform until they are put into the house.Producers can only assess housemates' potential during the audition process.
I don't see why a house 'representative of UK society' would be any more interesting.Maybe BB11 should comprise of Daily Mail readers.
Hira is rather boring but that is to do with her personality and nothing to do with her ethnicity.

She's just a boring woman though, same with boring white/indigenous HM's.

BB will NEVER be representative of society anyway, whether that be ethnicity or sexuality, because the majority of people applying are fame-hungry 20-somethings. It's impossible to get a representative sample, because they all have the confounding variables.

jgfrise 22-07-2009 12:58 PM

I think it is a very accurate representation of our culture today. When I visit my local shopping centre I feel like a tourist and very rarely hear english spoken.

rsj 22-07-2009 01:08 PM

I agree with the original poster. I just don't think it concerns BB whether the selection of housemates represents the society. They look for people with "personalities" rather than the average person in UK.

I don't have a problem against any ethnicities, but it's not a fair representation of our country.
I think it could be looked at another way : the house represents the "diversity" of society ..if that is so it does not have to proportionally represent sections of society....

the mix of culture, race, religion, class and sexuality also provides an interesting "challenge" and dimension to show ..where contestants are put outside their comfort zone and get to meet people they may not normally socialise with........

i need to dismount my high horse now

As they say " a change is as good as a rest!!

Look, I have no problem with having ethnics in the BB house.

But only 1/10 people in the UK are ethnic minorities.

So the BB house is clearly not a fair representation of our society, as there's a much higher % of people in there from an ethnic background.

I know we have a multicultural society, but the facts still show it's only about 1 in 10.
I'm an ethnic minority but I have to agree.

Maths is Maths. Most people in the UK are straight, white and indigenously British, so the majority of HMs should be as well.

I'm not saying it has to be dead exact or anything, but out of 21 HMs so far this year, you'd expect at least 14/15 to be fairly typical of the UK.

Ideally so it's fair for every applicant, in that their chances aren't enhanced/diminished because of their racial background.

But the BB producers may argue that foreign/gay/whatever applicants tend to be more interesting and entertaining in BB terms than straight/white/indigenous applicants, on average.

But who knows. In reality though, out of thousands of applicants, it should roughly balance out in terms of 'types of applicants' being comparably suitable for BB. I wouldn't imagine that one type would be much more amazing than another, overall.

I mean they've cast all types throughout the shows pretty much, with success, and also failure!

deja vu anyone?

They've gone for people who are interesting ... not "representative". Average people are be definition average and the producers want extreme characters. Why do you think that it needs to be a " fair representation of our country"... nobody thinks these muppets are representative of people in the UK so don't over thing it and just enjoy the tragedy .:P

I think this thread is a good representation of our country. There are plenty of intelligent, thinking people who realise that idiots come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Unfortunately there are also a couple of uneducated, right wing, BNP-voting plastic-Nazis who forget that this country fought a war against fascists just a few decades ago. And it's those people who make me ashamed to be British.

Yes that's what I mentioned above. Maybe because the ones that don't tick the usual boxes of most average people, tend to be more interesting/entertaining. But I felt that in general this wasn't the case, for large samples. I mean out of thousands of applicants, there's gotta be some interesting/entertaining 'typical' people; you only need 14/15 or so, can't be too hard.
