Understand the customs and be a respectful traveller.

I don't know how anybody can defend the idea of jailing her. To what benefit? This whole ordeal is probably fitting punishment as it is, and sure, ban her from coming back. Prison would achieve absolutely nothing.

Clearly a disrespectful act, but this attitude of "well, it's what they believe so it's right to them" is no defense for whatever punishment they end up handing out. Many countries have all sorts of horrific laws, and yes ideally you should be aware and follow them while in the country, but if they are to be broken it shouldn't mean whatever punishment is decided should be respected or defended simply because it's "what they believe".

Thing is their beliefs aren't even that relevant really, that's a separate issue. They're being charged on public disturbance offences which basically every country in the world has. Someone got 16 months jail time in this country for swinging from a cenotaph. There was all sorts of outrage over the graffiti on the WWII monument and you can be sure that if they knew who did it they would be prosecuted as well. How well would it go down in America if you burnt the USA flag in public? But because this is a strange foreign country with weird beliefs it doesn't matter as much if you violate their most respected practices and locations?

They have strict rules (I think its on all public transport) that you can't eat or drink anything whilst travelling. They do have signs up with the penalty charges.

I don't know why other than, they don't want you littering or spilling drink.

Quite a stretch from what I was saying, perhaps I should have read more into it but it seemed to go further than public disturbance, when the blame for 18 earthquake-caused deaths were being aimed at the girl at least by a senior politician.

Though I don't even support prison sentences for the things you mention.

Admittedly I was being a bit polemical lol, but still the charge itself is relatively uncontroversial really. Tbh even if we do talk about their beliefs it's not that uncontroversial to claim that human wrongs provoke godly anger either. In the grand scheme of human history it wasn't that long ago that that was the commonly held belief in this country, it's not surprising that it prevails in some parts of the world particularly in more remote regions where indigenous religions still hold a lot of sway. All I'm saying is that to chastise them for that is as futile as it would have been to chastise our ancestors over it. If it is a problem then it is not one that can be confronted with mockery and insulting those faiths - they're deeply embedded in a lot of societies and won't die out overnight. You don't have to be pleased about that but if you are visiting those countries then you should show some acknowledgement of it.

Sadly intelligence can't be taught, TS. Some of the stupidest people I know have degrees, some of them two or even three. As Sandy Toksvig said, Cambridge is full of people who can split the atom but can't wire a plug.

Very true, some of the cleverest people I know don't have a degree at all whereas I know plenty of stupid graduates in Law, Engineering of various descriptions... Anything you can think of really. Most worrying in my opinion is the number of straight-up idiotic Med students I encountered at Uni. I can only assume many of them are now stupid doctors.

She's probably sold her story "exclusively". If she has and makes money from this she should be made to donate the money to charity. Anyone who makes money from a story where they were found guilty should be made to give the money to charity.
