[Mayor of London Sadiq Khan responded to news
of the deaths saying it was

"heart-breaking".

He said: "My thoughts are with their families and
friends at this truly terrible time.

"This violence is shocking, completely
unacceptable and a betrayal of the
values that (Notting Hill) Carnival was founded to celebrate."]

He can use that same statement every year.

There was more of a fuss made over buildings being attacked in the riots than there was over 8 stabbings, 4 critical and now 2 dead...

shocking stuff really, not downplaying the riots but they should be getting equal response from the government surely

I have heard people moan on the radio saying we never get any stats from Glastonbury, and that its racist that stats are released for the Carnival not sure anyone gets stabbed at Glasto and do they injure or sexually assault the police

What for the holy weekend of diversity and culture??

I cant see 2 Tier Kier getting up in front of the flags to condemn this...

Met Police deputy assistant commissioner, Ade Adelekan, said at the weekend the carnival was supposed to be a "family day" but was "marred by unacceptable violence".

"We are tired of saying the same words every year," he said. "We are tired of telling families that their loved ones are seriously injured, or worse. We are tired of seeing crime scenes at Carnival."

During the previous two carnivals, one person was killed, 14 others were stabbed and more than 125 police officers were assaulted.

About 500 arrests were made at the carnival during those two years.

Measures had been taken to reduce crime, including officers being given greater stop-and-search powers and being allowed to order the removal of face coverings.

The Met said it had worked with event organisers for months to secure the event.

Kensington and Chelsea Council said rubbish to the equivalent weight of about 27 London buses had so far been cleared from the streets.

Approximately 30% of the waste will be recycled.

Great point.

i think there have been some stabbings at Glastonbury in the past, but not in significant numbers and definitely not with any regularity.

The carnival has always had lots of violence and robbery and nothing is ever really said about it and the police largely keep out of the way

More people died at Carnival than during the multiple riots.

But some dustbins being set alight is the real problem.

I've never been to Glastonbury nor Notting hill ,but I would imagine trouble causing can still happen in both these settings. But it seems alot more violence happens at Notting hill for some reason, it's out of control . I think there's more security at Glastonbury...it seems there's more of a wits about them there .

I remember years ago I went to a music festival, and there was talk of checking people for weapons...and I'm sure there was a knife that had been chucked on the floor outside.

Beso 04-09-2024 09:51 AM

How many stabbings were there over carnival weekend outside of the carnival? I wonder because the police had walk through metal detectors set up, yet still couldn't fully control the stabbing figures. I'm wondering how many saw the gates and took their knife fights elsewhere.

Luckily we have the canary to tell us its everyone elses fault but the carnival goers.

Maybe the Met and the Corporate Right-wing media could just leave them to get on with it next year. See what happens...?
