I do everything on google pay these days, the only reason I carry a card AT ALL is because fuel pumps are dragging their feet upgrading to contactless but loads of them no longer have a shop/booth, so if you don't have a physical card you can't fuel up at all!
Morrisons pumps have contactless now so it's possible and the rest will presumably upgrade over time. Only places I pay cash is when I get a haircut because although they take card he strongly prefers the cash, and the local Chinese take-away because it's the best in the area but they don't take card or do any of the delivery apps ... I strongly suspect this is less about the extra charges, and more about tax fiddling and questionable immigration status of some of their staff ... but damnit their chicken noodle soup is amazing... |

All these coffee places are so full of pretension anyway. I used to go to a COOP cafe for my coffee at lunch, was just a nice and a lot cheaper. And no upper middle class teens "putting the world to rights" thinking they're important and sophisticated.

I would be very concerned if we lost the ability to pay with cash, there have been a few instances in the past few years where the systems have gone down and if you had no cash you had to leave without your shopping. I don't think there are any establishments in Spain where you can only pay with card, they all take both and that is how it should be.

if retailers did not net more money accepting cards than not they simply wouldn't accept cards. Taking cash creates it's own overhead

I think one main issue is finding a bank to take it to. 10 years ago the valley had 3 banks now it has none. Retailers now have to go 35 miles to the nearest bank

I just can't see us becoming a 100% cashless society, machines are always breaking down....and there's always going to be digital errors. I understand the convenience of just using and taking card payments, but we still need to carry a bit of cash around. I know when it's a coffee shop or other food or drink place, the workers probably don't want to be touching money and then touching food at the same time ...for hygiene reasons and as it's less messing about. But to completely scrap cash.... is a mistake. I've seen it when people's cards get declined over and over again due to the shop's Machine playing up . I find it funny when the worker assumes it's the customer's fault ...they always say " oh it must be an issue with your card" . |
