The only info stated is that it was done by sad vandals.

Crimson Dynamo 07-07-2025 04:05 PM

The bench was installed in 2022 to combat loneliness and the rainbow design
was chosen because it was 'cheerful and fun'

People can think what they want of me but Glenn is making a mountain out of a molehill. I've agreed that it's extremely likely to have been a homophobic attack, I just take exception to the statement it definitely was. That's why the title is wrong.

Why else would a rainbow bench be vandalised? Seriously, enlighten us. What other brilliant motive could there be for someone so pressed about a few colours they thought were a Pride symbol? You’ve already conceded it was probably homophobia, yet you’re still desperately clinging to a technicality like it magically redeems the whole thing. Spoiler: it doesn’t.

Funny how you only seem this invested in nitpicking when it’s me pointing it out. It’s almost like you’re more bothered by who’s saying it than by the actual bigotry itself.

Incredibly sad

Please yourself. I don't have to explain to you. It doesn't matter who said it, the assumption is wrong. I'm not clinging on to anything. I'm as appalled as you are by a senseless act.

If you’re as appalled as I am, you might try acting like it instead of spending half the thread arguing over semantics. You don’t have to explain anything to me, but let’s be real—if it didn’t matter who said it, you wouldn’t be this defensive every time I open my mouth.

Oops, I may need to clarify my position more.

I did say in my post we don't know WHO did this.
As to the individual or individuals identity we don't.
However just about all the rest of my post was indicating this blacking out of the rainbow design of this bench was more than likely done from homophobic thinking and actions.
In my view, the weight in favour of that is extremely strong, indeed overwhelming.

I say again, WHY would any person or persons even think of blacking out the rainbow design of this bench, never mind actually ending up doing so, UNLESS those doing it ARE homophobic.
I can only answer myself one way as to that, which is, because he/she/they ARE.

Vicky. 07-07-2025 04:51 PM

Bloody ridiculous and petty. Also imo clearly homophobic

Over the last ten years Jewish graves have been desecrated, headstones smashed or daubed with swastikas. Jewish graves in the UK, London, Manchester, Kent, Belfast.... I mean... When this was mentioned before I remember being told by one of TiBB's gay community that it was probably just high spirits. So forgive me if I don't get bent out of shape over a bench being painted over nor spend any more time watching you go on a crusade to support an inherently homophobic religion.

:umm2:

An... Interesting perspective from whoever said that to you.

I do agree with you.

That's just sad. It's a lovely bench.

The rainbow was a symbol of hope during the pandemic. Maybe it was an anti-vaxxer!

This is interesting as are the views on it expressed here too.

No one knows who did this, therefore it can only be assumptions as to why whoever did.
However it would appear no other benches were painted over, only this one with a rainbow pattern on it.
I'd say it's fair to assume in that case, that since the rainbow image IS associated with the gay communities, that the probable reason for this rainbow imaged bench being painted over, was from a more likely homophobic thinking and action.

As to comments about plaques on benches, I've sat on benches and not even realised there was a plaque on them.
I'd doubt anyone seeing the rainbow and being probably more homophobic would even read the plaque anyhow.
However IF it wasn't done from a prejudicial homophobic thinking, then why on earth would anyone else even think about painting over this bench, never mind actually doing so.

I agree Joey.

I personally wouldn't be surprised if there isn't some 30 year old Anime fan who sees two guys being friends as "gay" in the town, who saw the bench and thought that it was a Pride Bench and then decided to vandalize it.

Crimson Dynamo 07-07-2025 06:20 PM

New suspect in this case has been announced

Usually it's the anime folk here who are less homophobic. And yeah, they're getting up there in years. 30yrs is generous, in some cases.
