Francis Maude is a moron. If he did say that he probably doesn't even remember it. I'm waiting for the day his press officer shoots himself... or Francis.

I fail to see firstly why any strike should be necessary and secondly why such a directive needed to be given by any cabinet Minister, worse still the PM.
The very slightest hint that something may soon be in short supply for a time, immediately has the less responsible and selfish going out gathering all they can.

In January a bad forecast for the weather was made predicting arctic temperatures and lot's of frost and ice likely, in less than 3 days the supermarket near me had no salt.
Crazy. also as pointed out above, the advice given to fill cans and store petrol in garages was not only foolish but dangerous too.

I totally agree as I often do with you arista, I cannot see any major reason whatsoever as to things being so bad to warrant any strike action.

There will be no threat to services the Civil Contingencies Act has this stuff covered...Got to love the Daily Mail though using words like 'militant' and 'civil disobedience' lol
It does make you think these are not workers threatening to strike but a group of naughty kids.

Will the PM run dry ?

Quote:

The Prime Ministerial Car refers to a number of British manufactured vehicles used by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The vehicles currently used are armoured, custom built Jaguar XJ Sentinel supercharged 5.0-litre V8 models. Prime Ministerial and ministerial limousines are operated and administered by the Government Car and Despatch Agency, an executive agency of the Department for Transport, and stored and maintained at 10 Downing Street. The cars are driven by specially trained UKSF close protection drivers.

General specifications

Many details are classified, but the current Jaguar models are estimated to have cost up to £300,000. They feature a number of security features, including a 13 mm explosive resistant steel plate underneath the body, titanium- and Kevlar-lined cabins, armoured windows with bulletproof polycarbonate toughened glass, run flat-tyres and 'gun ports' to enable bodyguards to return fire at any attackers. The cars are also equipped with an independent, self-contained oxygen supply to protect the Prime Minister and other passengers against chemical or biological attack. The car also features state-of-the-art communication systems, televisions, as well as adjustable, heated and cooled rear seats, and a Bowers & Wilkins 1200-watt, 20-speaker Dolby 7.1 surround-sound system. The vehicle is B7 level armoured, and is understood to be capable of withstanding the blast of 15 kg equivalent TNT and sustained attack by a variety of other armour-piercing weapons.

The car has a 5.0-litre supercharged petrol engine producing 503 bhp, with a top speed of 121 mph and is capable of reaching 62 mph (100kmh) from stationary in 9.4 seconds.
They probably only do 2 or 3 miles to the litre .....

I am getting fed up with people striking as it just hits us poor spods trying to go about our business - I have a 60 mile round trip to work and back every day so this is going to have a major impact - I can't afford to lose my job. This doesn't hurt anyone but Joe public and these tanker drivers earn a bliddy good wage if you ask me maybe if they had no work they would appreciate the money a bit better *steps off soap box*

I think as I read through political history, the Unions caused as many problems for Labour Govts as they have for Conservative ones.

Really, from what I have read and seen on documentaries, the Unions brought down the Labour Govt in 1979,so I doubt really any party can influence the Unions once they decide they want action of some sort.

I agree, the issue this Union has now though does not need any strike action whatsoever in my view.

So you think as they earn a decent wage they should be worked to death....Can I just remind you of one important issue....They drive tankers full of flammable liquid around...
Who would get the blame if a diver fell asleep and caused a major catastrophe?....

Yes but back in 1979 the Unions had stronger power.

Yes a Truck Petrol Strike
could destroy us for the time they Strike
as the Army may get petrol to Buses
and Lorrys and Police , Hospitals etc

Kizzy 28-03-2012 04:18 PM

This is what Ed actually said...
This morning Labour leader Ed Miliband said a strike 'has got to be avoided' and called for negotiation on both sides. He said: 'They've said that they want to get round a table, they should get round a table, and I think this strike can be avoided and it must be avoided.'

They want to talk... Why is the government not talking to them?
Because they are too busy whipping the nation into a frenzy about it....
