Mobile phones should be banned in schools

Mobile phones should be banned in schools - Gavin Williamson

Bloody Right
it's an Outright Distraction.

[Phones can act as a “breeding ground” for
cyber-bullying and social media
can damage mental health, he added.
"It’s now time to put the screens away, especially mobile phones,"]

so the safety that phones bring is worthless is it

Mitchell 07-04-2021 04:54 PM

In the current day and age, it’s important for children to have phones on their commute to and from school imo

Kate! 07-04-2021 04:58 PM

I've had this argument with my sons school several years ago. They took his phone off him and refused to return it till they had spoken to me. I don't think they should have the right to do that in this day and age.

Ammi 07-04-2021 05:01 PM

...not having phones in classrooms etc is fine but if a child was walking to and from school for instance...and there was a safeguarding issue, that child needs to have a form of contact...that’s very important...

Ammi 07-04-2021 05:03 PM

...oh, during the school day...I’m not sure there would be a need to have one during a school day but the school would have to provide secure places if they don’t already...

No as they leave

Working well, right now
in better schools

Can you imagine the 2,000+ kid queue for their phone at the end of the day?

Clever Schools have solved that
kids leave at different times

Glenn. 07-04-2021 05:12 PM

Taking their phones off them won’t stop cyber bullying

rusticgal 07-04-2021 05:27 PM

Perhaps they should give them phone lockers....I know they are a source of communication for safety reasons but they are not a necessity.

Ammi 07-04-2021 05:29 PM

...sadly bullying can and will still happen without the use of mobile phones and those phones offer a feeling of safety as well if in an actual situation of being bullied...and it would be such a complicated thing also...(...is Gavin Williamson going to provide extra income for the schools to staff such a complicated and time consuming system of removing phones from every pupil and returning them each day...)..many children need their phones during school hours for things like insulin injections etc and other medications that are dictated by times of the day and having alarms set...

Crimson Dynamo 07-04-2021 05:32 PM

no reason at all for any kid to have a phone in a school building

get them banned immediately

hijaxers 07-04-2021 05:41 PM

I don't think phones shoud be allowed into classrooms.

It is a Total Distraction in the Classroom,

Then as someone else suggested, supply lockers or take the phones away from them whilst they are in the classroom. Banning them from school completely is pointless.

Livia 08-04-2021 11:26 AM

Considering the bullying and abuse that abounds online - one of my nieces lost almost a year of school after being bullied by a bunch of girls online - there is no reason for pupils to have phones at school. If there's a problem at school, staff will contact their parents.

Exactly

What if something happens going to and after school and they have no phone for help?

In that case I imagine the same thing would happened now that would have happened more than fifteen or so years ago, when no one had a phone.

Marsh. 08-04-2021 11:42 AM

I don't think it's at all realistic to have a total ban on phones in schools. Not least because everything is online nowadays, kids don't need them to get on the internet and any bullying would not be confined to school times if being done online. Naive to think it would.

However, schools should be at a stage where procedures are in place to ensure phones have minimal impact on the actual lessons. Phone lockers etc.

joeysteele 08-04-2021 11:49 AM

Surely it can be procedure for during lessons ALL mobile phones are switched off.
Visibly so on desks whatever.

How hard can that be?.

No need then to gather them up or have a queue and time wasted getting them back.
