Mobile phones should be banned in schools - Gavin Williamson
Bloody Right it's an Outright Distraction. [Phones can act as a “breeding ground” for cyber-bullying and social media can damage mental health, he added. "It’s now time to put the screens away, especially mobile phones,"] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-56663010 |

In the current day and age, it’s important for children to have phones on their commute to and from school imo

I've had this argument with my sons school several years ago. They took his phone off him and refused to return it till they had spoken to me. I don't think they should have the right to do that in this day and age.

...not having phones in classrooms etc is fine but if a child was walking to and from school for instance...and there was a safeguarding issue, that child needs to have a form of contact...that’s very important...

...oh, during the school day...I’m not sure there would be a need to have one during a school day but the school would have to provide secure places if they don’t already...

Can you imagine the 2,000+ kid queue for their phone at the end of the day?

Perhaps they should give them phone lockers....I know they are a source of communication for safety reasons but they are not a necessity.

...sadly bullying can and will still happen without the use of mobile phones and those phones offer a feeling of safety as well if in an actual situation of being bullied...and it would be such a complicated thing also...(...is Gavin Williamson going to provide extra income for the schools to staff such a complicated and time consuming system of removing phones from every pupil and returning them each day...)..many children need their phones during school hours for things like insulin injections etc and other medications that are dictated by times of the day and having alarms set...

Then as someone else suggested, supply lockers or take the phones away from them whilst they are in the classroom. Banning them from school completely is pointless.

Considering the bullying and abuse that abounds online - one of my nieces lost almost a year of school after being bullied by a bunch of girls online - there is no reason for pupils to have phones at school. If there's a problem at school, staff will contact their parents.

I don't think it's at all realistic to have a total ban on phones in schools. Not least because everything is online nowadays, kids don't need them to get on the internet and any bullying would not be confined to school times if being done online. Naive to think it would.
However, schools should be at a stage where procedures are in place to ensure phones have minimal impact on the actual lessons. Phone lockers etc. |

Surely it can be procedure for during lessons ALL mobile phones are switched off.
Visibly so on desks whatever. How hard can that be?. No need then to gather them up or have a queue and time wasted getting them back. Last edited by joeysteele; 08-04-2021 at 12:52 PM. |
