Where do you buy books?

I thought I'd make a thread to recommend that HMV (I'm aware that on times I do sound like their PR gimp) have got a bundle of cult classics around the £2-£6 mark which is really worth exploiting.

I went in earlier today and picked up American Psycho and Kafka's Metamorphosis (&other stories) for £4 for the pair. Have also got Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World from there before - they also have some Dickens, Verne, some others I'm too tired to remember.

Other than HMV - I tend to buy from The Works a lot. Their 3 for £5 deal

Well it used to be Waterstones before the Dublin ones closed down *sob* So I'm taking to either Hodges and Figgis or Dubray Books. I usually get a good bulk at Christmas from Amazon.

InOne 09-03-2011 04:46 PM

Usually off the net or in Waterstones. Might check out HMV though

I like the idea of recycling, so I belong to www.greenmetropolis.com where people can buy and sell their books, or from Play.com. I never pay full price for a book so wouldn't buy from a high street store, but if it's a really obscure title I get it from Amazon. And of course I always have a browse in any second hand shops .

Callum 09-03-2011 05:36 PM

Waterstones

Kerry 09-03-2011 07:05 PM

Amazon, Play.com, The Works, WH Smiths & market stalls/charity shops

BigBrotherfan4ever 09-03-2011 07:06 PM

I usally buy my books from Waterstones or WHS, but im thinking of buying from amazon, cause there loads im wanting & im thinking will be cheaper in the long run, is anyone else bought books from there & what are they like, is it a good service.

Shaun 09-03-2011 07:07 PM

I got a few of Stephen Fry's on Amazon - it's pretty good :) much cheaper too. But then I did get second-hand

I can't recommend Amazon enough. Brilliant

GypsyGoth 09-03-2011 07:15 PM

Secondhand bookstores or amazon, I'd also drop into charity shops if they have books.

Stephanie 09-03-2011 07:24 PM

usually waterstones or borders.

Niamh. 09-03-2011 08:25 PM

amazon as I'm too lazy to go town to a book shop

Benjamin 10-03-2011 01:09 AM

Waterstones, online and at markets.

Beastie 10-03-2011 01:30 AM

The last book I bought was from play.com! "Room" for only £3. Not sure if it's still £3 now.. it was on Pancake Day when there was a few deals on play.com!

Beastie 10-03-2011 01:33 AM

The book I am sort of reading now "I never fancied him anyway" was only £2 from Sainsburys! There are some bargains out there.

MTVN 10-03-2011 07:56 AM

If I just want a cheap second-hand copy then alibiris and amazon are pretty good sites, if I want a new book it's normally WH Smith

Oh, have you read it yet? I read that a few weeks ago, it's really good

Livia 22-03-2011 03:28 PM

I buy a lot of books at my local Oxfam shop. They're cheap compared to new ones which is great because I buy a lot of books. The back part of the shop is completely given over to books and there are comfy chairs where you can sit and have a read before you buy. I’m lucky enough to have an independent bookshop with a coffee shop near where I work and I buy quite a few books there. Other than that it’s mostly Amazon.

Bojangles 20-08-2011 04:22 PM

Online and at second hand bookshops.

Kate! 10-10-2011 03:57 PM

Amazon, The Works, second hand book stalls and Charity Shops. I would never pay a lot for a book (when they first come out in hardback they can be up to £15), I get through them too quickly, as I suffer from insomnia and often read through the night. lol.

Boothy 10-10-2011 10:38 PM

I buy most of my books from Amazon. Either there, WH Smiths or, occasionally, Waterstones. Waterstones is usually too expensive though.

Black Dagger 11-10-2011 10:41 AM

WHSmith
Ebay
Amazon
Waterstones

Mainly Amazon though, can't recommend the website enough, it's grand.

MTVN 11-10-2011 10:44 AM

It's a shame that so many bookshops are struggling for business now, I miss Ottakar's :(

Yes, I find that too, even when they have 3 for two on, it's a costly shop.

MTVN 11-10-2011 10:47 AM

3 for 2 has finished now, they ended it on friday after 10 years of having it

Chuck 11-10-2011 11:50 AM

Here:

It's near my house and even if I'm not gonna buy books, I just love going there and spend a few hours reading and having a coffee with my friends, it's a very calming and peaceful environment.

I can't wait until I'm 60 years old, retired and just spending my days at bookstores, cinemas and cafes. <3

WHAT? Now that's bunk... definitely sticking to Amazon.

Niall 15-10-2011 02:10 PM

I get mine on Isohunt. http://gagadailyboards.com/images/sm...7ytco1_100.png

nicole_burks 08-02-2012 04:08 AM

We have Books-a-million or Barnes and Noble.

I buy from both of those places

I buy most of my books from Amazon. But that's because I live in Denmark and English books cost a fortune. I would much rather have a WH Smith or Waterstones to browse in, although Amazon is cheaper and give a very good service.

i buy like 7 shelves at a time via auction and amazon

Nick. 03-01-2015 06:09 PM

Waterstones. Although I'll often read it at the library, I often read books more than once but if I keep them for more than a few weeks they'll become too tatty.

Niamh. 03-01-2015 06:22 PM

Amazon mostly

InOne 03-01-2015 06:48 PM

Off the internet mainly but in Waterstones if there's one I want on that day

Black Dagger 03-01-2015 06:49 PM

Amazon even more so now that I have my Kindle.

BigSister 03-01-2015 08:52 PM

Waterstones Whsmiths or if I see one I like in a charity shop. Sometimes I also use the supermarkets too

Jay. 03-01-2015 08:57 PM

Amazon.
