Goodfellas V Casino

Which is the greatest of these 2 scoreses gangster masterpieces?

Its hard to believe but they were only made 5 years apart, yet goodfellas feels a throwback to the 70's/80's

Both imho are sensational movies, the stories, the books, the cinematography, the cast, the directing, everything , just awesome

on IMDB goodfellas has 8.8 out of 10....one of the highest scores in movie history, casino has a healthy 8.2 out of 10

goodfellas is movie history, it created a movie style and genre all of its own for future generations of movie makers.

However i would argue that IF scorsese had edited out about 40 minutes of sharon stones domestic tantrums, then casino would have been as good if not better.....as 80% of casino is just awesome

I watched it in the cinema and its the most exciting cinema experience Ive had. even the bit where deniro gets blown up in the opening credits, you knew this would be a hell of a ride

Whilst pesci is in full psycho mode, james woods plays a fantastic cameo as a dentist chasing loser, don rickles is great too, theres a long list of legendary italian/american actors whove starred in goodfellas, raging bull, etc

But for me the diamond here is deniro...hes not playing a real gangster here, hes a gambling maths genius.the role he plays in casino as sam "ace" rothstein is just cinematically awesome, the attention to detail, the way his genius built up the vegas gambling strip for the gaangsters, meanwhile him being jewish , despite being nicknamed the golden jew, hes always an outsider who has to quell his gangster friends.

his attention to detail, like deniro himself, is mindboggling, the man weighed every showgirl, measured the number of currents in every fruit bun, tested the hardness of the floor on basketball courts before giving odds. test drove every yokel on the gambling floor, oversaw every camera, every cheater, meanwhile as he made the mafia millions he wasnt even allowed a license to work in nevada....so changed his job every other month.

In the meantime he has to fight his gold digging missus every 5 minutes as she bleeds his fortune

so what happened to scorseses legendary editor thelma schoonmaker here? cut sharon stones endless blubberings and you have an all time classic
very few actors could have played . To be frank your heart actually bleeds for this man. Only a legendary actor could make your heart bleed for the man who built up the mobs vegas empire.

Goodfellas

Both crap, I hate films that glamorise crime.

Shaun 03-04-2013 12:19 AM

Have you watched Goodfellas Kizzy?

Kizzy 03-04-2013 12:24 AM

Of course I have, why would I comment if I hadn't? They're not my cup of tea but can see the appeal some.

Fair enough, I find it a bit odd you have images in your sig/avy from a movie that inspired real life crimes but then say these 2 glamorise it.

kizzy just trying to be controversial again, but ultimately hypocritical
casino and goodfellas are real life stories. they dont glamourize crime, in fact they show the ups and downs and how it all ends in total ruination. theyre amazingly well made, brilliantly scripted and acted movies. the detail and intertwining of the history, the individual stories is unparalelled in america movies. the amount of work that must have gone into these movies and sopranos that followed must have been enormous. neither of these films encourages crime, it simply tells the story of these crime syndicates. it exposes the corruption and exploitation and tries to get the the truth and reality , just as most great movies do.

I would actually argue that awful shows like eastenders glamourize crime more. Its only mainstream tv every day, the criminals get awya with endless crimes and try to pass it off as reality? at least the criminals in scorseses movies usually get some justice one way or another. theyre far more realisitc brilliantly told detailed crime stories.

I'm just messin, you mean 'A clockwork orange' that film was a satirical look into the future, the whole film was a metaphor, as was 'Natural born killers' another fave of mine.

I know what "A Clockwork Orange" was about but it had very violent scenes and actually inspired real life crimes thats why I thought it was odd.

wow kizzy became insincere and disingenuous? whata surprise. so predictable to shallow so tedious. whatever happened to sincerity and integrity

It did but the context was totally different, it was not recreating real life crime in the film if you know what I mean, it was not in anyway based on real life events and it was totally not the intention of the film to inspire any violent act.

Brother Leon 03-04-2013 01:25 AM

Niamh. 03-04-2013 08:57 AM

hhhmmm I actually preferred Casino, both were brilliant though

AnnieK 03-04-2013 09:08 AM

Goodfellas...although both fantastic films....

SharkAttack 03-04-2013 09:43 AM

Goodfellas easily. I remember seeing Casino in the theatre and amazed at how much it was trying to be Goodfellas in a slightly different era and location. Sort of ruined it for me, but I still enjoy it. Also got the best and last of Sharon Stone out of it.

InOne 03-04-2013 10:42 AM

Goodfellas is my all time favourite film so definitely that. I'm actually going to watch Casino tonight. I've not seen it for a few years but always remember it seemed to go on a little too long. Still brilliant though of course. What film wouldn't be with De Niro and Pesci starring?

yes but she still managed to destroy an otherwise brilliant movie. she admits she spent the whole shoot chasing after scorsese demanding more screen time, sadly he gave in, watch the movie from start to finish and its clear she should have been 905 edited out. she ruined the movie.

Vanessa 03-04-2013 08:52 PM

Goodfellas is better, but i also like Casino. I'd watch both!

Roy Mars III 03-04-2013 09:02 PM

Robert De Niro 's suits are the best thing about Casino

Just having watched Casino it's nowhere near as good as Goodfellas. Just doesn't run as slick and you can't really relate to anyone

Yeah she got annoying in the end. I just didn't buy that he'd go to all that trouble for her. Sharon Stone has next to no screen presence. I bet with that screen time thing she thought she'd be able to pull off the gangsters wife as well as Michelle Pfeiffer did in Scarface. It's safe to say she failed miserably.
