What religion do you follow?

Joe's thread got me thinking about this actually, so in what religious system do you believe, if at all?

and Catholic is Christianity

Niall 13-04-2013 11:01 PM

I was brought up as a Catholic, but I'd consider myself a Christian now seeing as I want nothing to do with them anymore. I don't really believe in Church either, but just sort of a personal relationship with God. I don't see the significance in wasting an hour a week in some stuffy building in total boredom.

That said, recently I've been feeling increasingly.. nihilistic (I think that's the right term anyway). So I'm not sure what to believe. I try to convince myself that there is a God, but I just feel like I'm trying to fool myself into some fantasy nowadays.

why do people need an actual religion though even if they do believe in God or whatever?

I had a teacher who believed in God but he wasn't any specific religion, so he'd go to Church/Mosque etc. There's a name for it but I can't remember

I don't know really. Most of the people I know that attend church say that it's all because of the community aspect of it.

It's a weird thing anyway. I don't see why people are required to go to some building every week to listen to passages from a 2000-year-old book that they've probably heard before. None of it seems to have any significance on the personal relationship with God which is what Christianity is meant to be about (well not to me anyways).

most Protestants, baptists, and Presbyterians would say that Catholics are going to hell and aren't actually Christians

At least from my experience

Catholics would say they are going to hell as well.
But isn't that why they split in the first place? They differ on their interpretations of the bible.

Like a stopped clock, Marsh is right. Atheism is not a religion.

I'm an anti-theist.

Ammi 14-04-2013 09:29 AM

..I really don't like threads/questions like this..(nothing personal Redway..)..what religion are you..?..what political party do you support..?...how old are you..?...etc...does it make you a different person, have different values, interact differently..more compassion/sense of right or wrong...there is a reason why these type of questions are no longer asked in job applications etc...because they serve no purpose except to invite prejudice and judgements....

Marc 14-04-2013 09:32 AM

No it doesn't Ammi. I'd prefer to know somebody for who they are rather than their beliefs. I don't need to know about your S&M addiction or your love for splashing kids with puddings Ammi

lostalex 14-04-2013 10:23 AM

Atheist.

I think all organized religions are a lie and just a means of controlling people and/or making a few people very rich. It's a way for a small group of people to control a large number of people. I see very little different between religious leaders and politicians.

That being said, I do believe that the Universe is vastly more complex than what science can currently explain. I definitely think the universe is full of mysteries and things that we have no idea about. I just don't believe that any current religions know the truth about it though.
