Eurovision - What do the UK need?

They send their best song since 2009 but still Europe wont vote for us so whats next?

I honestly think the UK needs a break.

Amy Jade 14-05-2016 10:53 PM

We couldn't win with Beyoncé tbh

Cherie 14-05-2016 10:53 PM

Neighbouring countries that like it

Headie 14-05-2016 10:53 PM

It wasn't even that good of a song idk what y'all were expecting

They need to take it seriously again, get a top composer to write the song, do a search for the best singer/performer and promote it throughout Europe non stop like they did with Jade. It's not complicated to see we're sending trash every year

Samm 14-05-2016 10:53 PM

Jack & Joe weren't all that, they were ok but nothing special, we need something different and unique (by that not something like Electra Velvet)

Amy Jade 14-05-2016 10:54 PM

I hope we don't drop out though, I don't think it would run without us?

I agree they weren't special but they were definately more deserving than the televote awarded them.

LukeB 14-05-2016 10:56 PM

Spice Girls

Definitely,I agree.

MTVN 14-05-2016 10:56 PM

Agree with Hayden. It's simple really - we need to put the effort in. This country has a strange relationship with Eurovision where we treat it is a joke, send a very average act and then act surprised when we don't do very well. Tbh I thought Jack and Joe were poor and would have put them in my bottom 5, sounded flat and it was low key and didn't stand out at all. Yeah there's always gonna be an element of political/neighbourly voting but we could still challenge if we really wanted to.

Pete. 14-05-2016 10:57 PM

I can never win Eurovision again imo. We were lucky to do well with Jade but I feel that there's no formula to winning Eurovision unless for overt geographical/political reasons/statements or occasionally good songs or luck. You can't make a winning formula and song from Eurovision it just all how the votes line up and it's usually nothing to do with the song

_Tom_ 14-05-2016 10:57 PM

Adele.

Mitchell 14-05-2016 10:58 PM

Judging by tonight's winner, a political song

Amy Jade 14-05-2016 10:59 PM

I don't think we can just blame Geography either, look at Australia...They just sent a great singer and song and they did brilliantly.

Braden 14-05-2016 10:59 PM

Yeah, I feel sorry for them because there was a slight hype that probably made them feel like they were going to do well. The juries giving us a fair amount of points also caused a bit of a kick in teeth when it was found that we did really badly on the televoting...eek.

I did find the performance really average imo. I think it was wishful thinking because the two guys were really nice people, but it's like others have said; we need to take the competition seriously to do well. This year and Molly's year were marginal improvements, but we're still entering really average songs/singers. It's not going to cut it when other countries take the contest so seriously.

Not a song about the battle of hastings? :worry:

EspeonBB 14-05-2016 11:03 PM

We need to send a great song (Joe & Jake weren't bad but they weren't amazing either) and actually put effort into the staging. I don't think it's a geographical thing because Australia did well this year and they have no neighbours to vote for them

Can't wait for next year when every country sends a song about what the other countries have done to them, it's like indirect tweet vision.

Denver 14-05-2016 11:03 PM

I think we should ask a American artist to do it since they won it for us last time

Samm 14-05-2016 11:05 PM

tbh if I wasn't from the UK I wouldn't of remembered our song

LukeB 14-05-2016 11:07 PM

Russia was only favourite to win because of their staging and the effects.. we need something like that.

Shaun 14-05-2016 11:07 PM

Someone with at least a semblance of a fanbase, really. Blue did well because the fans knew of them and they finished 5th in the public vote in 2011. They just messed up the jury rehearsal and slipped to 11th.

Jade Ewen wasn't known in 2009 but she had the name Andrew Lloyd Webber attached to her so that was something.

I wouldn't say that's exactly true; the song was favourite to win before the staging or effects had been planned. But you're definitely right about us doing something a bit more special.

Amy Jade 14-05-2016 11:13 PM

We need to send Adele

It's something we lack off tbh. And like Shaun said we someone with some fan base.. The Spice Girls (unrealistic) would be perfect imo.

DrunkerThanMoses 14-05-2016 11:19 PM

Either a young female singing a boring power ballad or a 20 something hot guy singing a up beat techno song.

Not being funny but that is what majority of the entries are. I am surprised the uk did bad this year, easily one of the better and original entries.

Here for Billy Bragg singing about David Cameron ****ing a pig, food banks and how we want back in the EU

Babayaro. 14-05-2016 11:23 PM

Whatever we send we still wont win.

Denver 14-05-2016 11:24 PM

Take all our money out and **** them over

T* 14-05-2016 11:29 PM

Guy Freeman to be locked in a cupboard

Amy Jade 14-05-2016 11:49 PM

I just read on FB that the Eurovision rules on songs are no political subtext so if that's true how did Ukraine even submit that song?

Headie 15-05-2016 12:02 AM

I remember reading something saying Simon Cowell wanted to try and send an unknown act one year and see how they do, as a challenge. I would be here for that tbh :clap1: BBC would never let it happen tho

Edit: this was it http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...r-s-entry.html

Not only that but due to Russia being Soviet Union with lots of today´s countries being part of it at one time in the past and then collapsing, they have a multitude of bordering countries who vote for them just because they share them same border with them.

Ie Russia has lots of neighbour countries + slavian countries that usually vote for them regardless (because of shared history and similar culture) of whatever the song is or whatever the performance is.

Even if Russia sent a person to do fart noises for 3+ minutes, they would almost certainly be guaranteed at least a top 10 spot.

Pretty much.

Just had a random thought - it would never happen but I wonder how different it would be if ITV took over the selection/broadcasting in the UK. Like the BBC, they're a member of the EBU (along with Channel 4, S4C in Wales and STV in Scotland). Again, it would never happen, but I wonder how ITV would treat the competition.

Tom4784 15-05-2016 12:16 AM

We could send a supergroup consisting of every superstar going and we'd get no higher than 5th, it's pointless to try. Better to treat it as the ridiculous farce it is.

Mokka 15-05-2016 01:06 AM

I am a devoted Anglophile... But your song was not good compared to the competition this year

I want nothing more than to root for the UK... But I just couldn't

LaLaLand 15-05-2016 01:43 AM

A one-off from One Direction, seriously.

But even then we wouldn't win. Everyone goes on about how it's political - sometimes it is yes, but ALOT of the singer in the ESC are very well known and established in alot of European countries, they're not plucked from obscurity like some of ours, so countries are bound to vote for them (Bonnie and Engelbert excluded).

OR do what Jade Ewen and Andrew LW did, campaign and promote like mad around Europe in the months before, we came 5th then.

Pick the song earlier - promote, promote, promote - get votes?

It would be a six hour marathon with all the ad breaks

Crimson Dynamo 15-05-2016 08:50 AM

Well the soing was pretty bland but should have been perhaps half way. The song that won was not the best, but people hate Russia. You need a great song to kill the politics. Lst year and Conchita did it. This year politics won.

But our song was bang average

joeysteele 15-05-2016 08:55 AM

Wining it is out the window in my view, as we would never get really current big stars to enter for the UK like the days of Sandie Shaw,Lulu and Cliff Richard naming just 3.

Also, ours was okay and I liked it,I hoped it would do well but it was better when it went to the up tempo parts.

The Jury voting showed we can pull in votes across the board again,Russia and Estonia gave us votes,Malta gave us 12, we got votes from 11 of the juries this time.
The song has to register though with those watching and clearly it didn't last night.
