School subjects poll

Apart from the core subjects maths, english, science which 4 or 5 subjects would you make compulsory from yr7?
please wait for poll :)

Saph 11-10-2012 01:09 PM

I think ICT and PE are already compulsory so apart from them i'd say perhaps sociology and psychology, i'd have loved to have done them instead of PE and History in school

Vanessa 11-10-2012 01:19 PM

History, Geography, Arts, Domestic Science and Languages.

Kizzy 11-10-2012 01:25 PM

Dammit forgot to add PE to poll, wasen't sure if ICT was compulsory or not thanks saph =)

Marc 11-10-2012 01:25 PM

Geog, IT, Languages & Economics

It's good to have a language, I regret not paying much attention to French
Economics seems key for every adult
IT helps with jobs
Geography is fun

"Domestic science"? Can't just make up subjects Kizzy

MTVN 11-10-2012 01:42 PM

History and Economics are the only two I'd actually make compulsory up to A-level really, picked IT because it should be for a couple of years but when it got to GCSE it was just a lesson where you'd piss about really

Think that's cooking and sewing lol

MTVN 11-10-2012 01:46 PM

tsk trying to make it sound clever and important by calling it science

Marc 11-10-2012 01:47 PM

Everybody needs to cook and god only knows the number of sewing related accidents you will encounter when you finish school.. Dreadful

MTVN 11-10-2012 01:50 PM

I'll have you know I was a bit of an expert on the sewing machine in school

Kizzy 11-10-2012 02:08 PM

Domestic science was called home economics when i was at school (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) I meant cookery, meal planning, nutrition..
Textiles is sewing/ dressmaking.

Jamie585 14-10-2012 11:55 PM

Biology, Psychology , Sociology and Art :D want to be a graphic designer!!

LemonJam 15-10-2012 12:51 AM

ICT is a no brainer, I chose Economics too. I never studied it but I feel like I should have because I'm clueless about it.

Novo 15-10-2012 12:57 AM

Should be more hours of PE then what there is now anyway, when i was in School think we had PE Twice a week but it was only 1 hour each time.. should be at least doubled to 2 hour lessons

Shaun 15-10-2012 01:01 AM

ICT's pretty much a must. History, languages and economics seem the most useful and offer a varied syllabus. I clicked other to include something along the lines of PSHE, but that could be covered by biology and sociology I suppose.

Most of what is being taught in IT nowadays is not what is being looked for in the working world. Yes, computer skills are important, but all I learnt from mine was how to print screen.

LemonJam 15-10-2012 01:13 AM

I know this may seem hilarious to some being a music student, but I've never really seen the use for History.

Shaun 15-10-2012 01:56 AM

the knowledge of how we got here and vastly important events? no me neither james :idc: twat

Jessica. 15-10-2012 02:16 AM

History and Geography need to be taken more seriously.

I managed to fail Key Stage 3 History and can easily say that I've never used it for anything remotely important in my life or felt that I should know more about it. I've never felt the subject has given me a certain skill (such as PE and teamwork, Maths and problem solving, Technology and innovative thinking etc) Most of the main historic events I know of anyway so I don't see the point in it being compulsory when it's not really helpful, I don't gain any real skill from it and I have no interest in it.

Shaun 15-10-2012 02:36 AM

the basic skills it gives are analysis of evidence and credibility, they're pretty useful :p I lost count of the number of times we had a "HERE'S SOURCE A, IS IT RELIABLE?" moment.

not to mention its links with politics, heritage & english... it's more of a solid basis for loads of other subjects to link with, really.

Its called food technology now.

Apple202 15-10-2012 02:30 PM

History, Geography, Art, Politics and Economics. I didn't see Languages though, would probably replace Art with it.
