UK 'now has seven social classes - Take the test

Quote:

Traditional British social divisions of upper, middle and working class seem out of date in the 21st Century, no longer reflecting modern occupations or lifestyles.

The BBC teamed up with sociologists from leading universities to analyse the modern British class system. They surveyed more than 161,000 people and came up with a new model made up of seven groups.

Answer five questions to see where you fit in:

I am:

Traditional Working Class

Everything gets rolled up - Trousers, shirtsleeves and fags .....

Livia 03-04-2013 02:26 PM

Established Middle Class. However... I don't consider myself anything other than Working Class, from a good Working Class family, and proud to be.

Traditional Working Class

Emergent service workers

This class group is financially insecure, scoring low for savings and house value, but high for social and cultural factors. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:

Are young
Enjoy a cultured social life
Rent their home - almost 90%

Niamh. 03-04-2013 02:29 PM

I did this earlier and I got a different result lol

Established middle class

This is the most gregarious and the second wealthiest of all the class groups. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:

Enjoy a diverse range of cultural activities
Went to university
Are comfortably off, secure and established

Result: the class group you most closely match is:
New affluent workers

This class group is sociable, has lots of cultural interests and is in the middle of all the class groups in terms of wealth. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:

Are young
Come from a working class background
Own their own home

I was established Middle class, but I'm definitely better than Niamh and Liv. It must have scored me down because I listen to hip-hop rather than jazz.

Technical middle class
This is a small, distinctive and prosperous new class group. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:

Mix socially with people similar to themselves
Work in research, science and technical fields
Enjoy emerging culture such as going to the gym and using social media

I don't like using social media so that is wrong:hugesmile:

Niamh. 03-04-2013 02:49 PM

What did you do in your lunch hour to push up the ladder?

Omah 03-04-2013 03:15 PM

I have reviewed my CV, telephoned my solicitor and accountant, checked my diary and address book - having taken the test again, I discover that I am

Elite

This is the wealthiest and most privileged group in the UK. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:
  • Enjoy high cultural activities such as visiting museums and listening to classical music
  • Went to private school and elite universities
  • Socialise with people who do a wide variety of jobs

I have already made enquiries about the purchase of a substantial property in Chipping Norton ..... :hmph:

 I think I missed ticking the box saying I liked Indie music the first time, who'd have guessed that would push someone up a class

That's a load of crap, doesn't ask you age, gender or even what job you do. What if I'm Mick Philpott, but socialise with a nurse, it could come out working class!

Niall 03-04-2013 06:23 PM

I answered the financial questions using what my parents earn, seeing as I don't earn anything. So even though my result says so, I don't own my own home okay.

And I guess that's quite true, regardless of how I answered the questions actually. But then again those statements are more than basic and general, so.
