Age discrimination

How come it is illegal to discriminate based on age.

But it is legal to pay someone less money because of their age, even though they do the same job as others?

18-20s get £5.02 per hour. Over 21s get £6.31. Both minimum wage.

18+ is deemed an adult in everything bar wages...why?

Marsh. 18-04-2013 04:55 PM

Is it not based on experience?

Vicky. 18-04-2013 04:56 PM

No. Its just age. Someone 21 might not have any experience in the role they go for...whereas someone who is 19/20 could have a year or so experience(or even have done college courses and such in the area they are applying for). But the 21 year old would still be paid more.

I don't get it either Vicky.

Maybe we should complain to Ofcom.

Yeah it's pretty bad, I was being paid minimum wage to work in offices for a few years before I turned 21 (from the age of 16) even though the workload was fairly intense in certain jobs. I spent a summer re-doing a company's filing system for a summer job. 9 hours a day of checking files were complete, giving them new stickers with the new filing system details on them and if they weren't complete, trying to chase up the information to complete them which was often several years old. Think I was earning £5.35 an hour for that job. Not quite minimum wage in that one but I worked harder than most of the office staff and I was there for 3 months :/

Jake. 18-04-2013 05:38 PM

Disgusting really... I work harder at my place than a lot of the over-21s

Marsh. 18-04-2013 05:46 PM

Yeah, when you're new and especially if you're a school leaver they think they can just get you to do anything.

When I worked as a clerical assistant I started doing paperwork for the sales manager and suddenly I started getting all the sales guys coming in asking me to photocopy this, find this, phone them etc. one or two is fine but I got to the point I just told the manager to inform them I'm not paid to be their lackey, I had my actual job to do. Lol

If they wanted me to call someone I'd pass them the phone, point them to the photocopier etc

If anything, the young work harder. As the older members of staff put all the jobs they CBA to do onto the younger ones. Managers give the worst jobs to the younger ones as they are less likely to complain about it too.

It's bizarre that they're allowed get away with it for no logical reason
