And gave a more technical answer, "Sound is vibration, transmitted to our senses through the mechanism of the ear, and recognized as sound only at our nerve centers. The falling of the tree or any other disturbance will produce vibration of the air. If there be no ears to hear, there will be no sound."

eggsactly. a tree falls in exactly tyne same way and creates the same sound(sounds is just vibrations in air). it has nothing todo with anyone being there not hear it. the same vibrations of air are created.

Sound is wave forms in air. those vibrations don't require anyone to hear them. they are simple wave forms, natural physical reactions of air disturbed. they exist, period.

hence my point, the idea that sound only exists if a human hears it, is ****ing arrogant and dumb.

I think it's just philosophers who think about stuff like this. But with a degree like philosophy, they have plenty of time to ponder this stuff, not being encumbered by work commitments.

I personally think the question is an earlier form of 'would you have done that if i wasn't here?' Nobody knows what happens when you're not there, to be able to directly establish if something happens, you have to be there to recognise it.

But in general scientific terms, sound is defined by 'vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person's or animal's ear'

So if we look at it as purely waves through the air that are only sound when it reaches and reacts to someone or somethings ear drum, taking the ear out of the equation, is it still a sound? Could nearby animals hear it? probably, but to us, not being there, it is technically not a sound because it hasn't got a receptor in order for it to become a sound.

So technically speaking, yes, a tree does make a sound when falling because somewhere an animal or a person would hear it, but if nothing hears it.. then it isn't a sound, just mere waves travelling through the air.

Of course it does, the sound waves still radiate but they just don't reach our ears. That doesn't mean they don't make a sound.
