Trump recognizes Jerusulam as Israel's capital

And Theresa May wants to speak to him about this foolish move.

The Prime Minister said the ancient city should ultimately be shared between Israel and a future Palestinian state, amid growing unease over the American president's proposal to move the US embassy in Israel.

Mr Trump is expected to make an announcement on Wednesday on the plans, first proposed during his presidential election campaign.

Is Trump 'declaring war' by naming Jerusalem Israel's capital?

I think this is an unwise move by him.
I just can't see it helping in any way at this moment in time really.

many presidents promised this - no surprise that Donald was the one to deliver it

Oliver_W 06-12-2017 07:24 PM

Let's be real - a "future Palestine state" isn't going to happen any time soon, unless Palestine changes everything about itself from the top down. But acknowledging this by naming it as the capitol isn't really constructive.

A couple of presidents wanted this but it was too problematic to go through with it.

well they would not know until they tried. Nothing is easy in the middle east due to a lack of education (Israel aside) and a reliance on cults and superstition (Israel included)

Oh, you mean the 1.5 million Palestinians that now crammed onto a speck of land... Gaza; need to change their ways before they can return to a land where their families once lived. A land that is now called Israel?

Perhaps Turkey will drop out of NATO which I'm sure would please Trump except for maybe closing the air bases there. Hmmm. Donald Trump, master of foreign policy.

Palestine needs to grow up and move on

I did say from the top down - they'll never get anywhere under Hamas and Hezbollah .

I think Hamas and Hezbollah are a necessary evil in the resistance against Israel. Granted, shooting civilians is never justified but the Israelis do that too. It was the West that declared Hamas as a terrorist group but interestingly Likud were previously Jewish terrorist militias.

I'm not going to hide the fact that I'm anti- colonial Zionism, though obviously I'm not anti Jew. I believe that if all us Brits were pushed into a town the size of Brighton and the group who pushed us out colonized the rest of Britian, we would fight back too.

This has never been about people, its about land.

I wonder if that could be a future prediction - unwittingly or not.

One in five of the citizens of Israel is an Arab, the vast majority (over 80%) are Muslim. They have equal voting rights and it's one of the few places in the Middle East where Arab women can vote. Just for a little balance.

It wouldn't be a tragedy if the entire area just became Israel, as long as the Palestinians were allowed to stay in their current houses.

There are Arabs sitting in the Knesset, it's not like they are excluded. One of Israel's Supreme Court judges is an Arab. People imagine it's all Jews.

A foolish and incendiary move from a man that should not be trusted with a pair of safety scissors

bots 06-12-2017 11:48 PM

Its not what one would call a calming gesture. Wonder why he wants to stir things up at this point, what possible motive could he have

DemolitionRed 07-12-2017 06:30 AM

Many Jews in Israel are anti-Zionist who lobby and fight to protect the discrimination, alienation, racism and inequality of the Arab Israelis.

Equally, many Jews in Israel are horrified at Trumps move because it goes against everything they have been working towards.

I believe its a promise he made to his Zionist supporters during his campaign for presidency. But it could be as simple as, Trump wants to go down in history for changing the state of Israel.

The Jerusalem Embassy Act was passed as law in the USA in 1995. Following this, every 6 months, whichever president was sitting, he postponed it. Every 6 months for 22 years. Clinton, Bush, Obama... because they didn't want to deal with the backlash, even though the law was passed almost unanimously and corresponds with what the Israelis made law in 1980.

I am not a fan of Trump, the opposite, in fact. However, he hasn't made this stuff up, it was already law in the USA.

Jerusalem is a big deal to Jews. It's like our Mecca, if that makes sense. And there's no one going to mess with Mecca, right? Or everyone would be up in arms.

Before he was assassinated, Yitzak Rabin, at a celebration of the 3000th year of Jerusalem's existence, said “Jerusalem is the heart of the Jewish people and a deep source of our pride. We differ in our opinions, left and right, we disagree on the means and the objective. In Israel, we all agree on one issue: the wholeness of Jerusalem, the continuation of its existence as capital of the State of Israel. There are no two Jerusalems. There is only one Jerusalem. For us, Jerusalem is not subject to compromise, and there is no peace without Jerusalem.”
