What killed BB on C5?
So we all know the combination of Nikki returning in BB7, the CBB5 race row and the abysmal production of BB8 are what led to the decline of the Channel 4 show, and arguably, the franchise as a whole, as the show hasn't been the same since then, has it?
But over the past year or so, interest and ratings seem to have sunk even lower. BB just about scraping a million viewers (sometimes even less) and CBB averaging almost half of what it was a few years back. Compare that to the earlier C5 series, where civilian BB could comfortably average 1.6m+ (almost 2m in BB14's case) and the renaissance of CBB, which saw an increase in tabloid coverage, as well as ratings above 3m for CBB13/15. Granted, C5's performance doesn't hold a candle to C4, they were doing somewhat well a few years back. Now it's not even their highest rated show anymore. What went wrong? |
It's just a bit rubbish

I was actually thinking of making this thread on the plane home last night so you beat me to it :fist:
depends really, CBB5 and Bear winning destroyed the ratings but C5 did most of the killing? |

Two winners - Bear and Helen Wood

Incessant twists, backdoor evictions and unbalanced edits

Everything has its day, and time isn't kind to things that are old.

Overkilled it with too many series
|
Sheer quantity of series, ****ty production tasks and questionable casting. Ppl like bear winning. BRING BACK LIVE FEED
|
too many series, annoying twists, too many housemates purely for shock factor entertainment

We all know that the three things that 'killed' C4 BB were the combination of Nikki being able to return and be eligible to win, the CBB5 racism row and then the BB8 all female launch which was mostly filled with 'fame hungry wannabees.' This resulted in the ratings decline over the last 3 years on C4 BB and resulted in C4 axing it.
After that, you could argue that BB had already been 'killed' - but for arguments sake BB14, CBB14, CBB15 did really well in the ratings after a worrying few years and then BB17 also improved in the ratings, providing evidence the show was building itself back up after Timebomb so C5 BB was doing 'okay' by it's low standards. Then Bear comes along, behaves despicably, bullies majority of his fellow housemates and then wins the series. People decide to switch off. Intense rumours follow for an 'All Stars' series of CBB with big former names rumoured including Katie Price, Perez Hilton and Katie Hopkins (the trio were a fixture in C5's most popular series CBB15). The 'All Stars' line up for said CBB series instead includes names such as Jasmine Waltz and Coleen Nolan. People decide to switch off this series and not watch due to the disappointing line up. THEN the next civilian run of the show BB18 features a large number of 'civilians' who are actually not civilians. Many have featured on other television shows and have large social media followings and would be able to qualify for the celebrity version of the show. Many people decide to switch off - hence the low ratings. SO IN SHORT - the 3 things that 'killed' C5 BB were Bear winning CBB18, CBB19 having a disappointing 'All Star' line up and then BB18 being filled with people who could have qualified for the celebrity show which already has 2 runs a year. |
These were my thoughts when I made a thread in the summer!

the constant mistakes, the constant tackiness, and the unwillingness to listen until it was too little too late
|
3 series a year, no line between BB and CBB housemates, and too much manipulation.

I think Helen Wood comparing Brian Belo a murderer/rapist, combined with her and Marc calling him words like 'psycho' and 'dumbass' as he tried to escape being bullied by jumping over the wall is another key factor, as there were thousands of Ofcom complaints for it.
