[New report which found
"at least 69 suicides could have
been linked to problems with
benefit claims" over six years.
Families and campaigners have
called for a full public inquiry,
says the paper, following the findings
by government spending watchdog,
the National Audit Office.]

This is not a good story,
they need a conclusion
on this.

It'll of course be dismissed by Conservatives because you can't draw a direct correlation between suicide and the "cause" of suicide, blissfully unaware of the very real and very persistent stress that living on benefits actually entails. I would imagine the number of financial-stress-related suicides (whatever their financial status) is far, far higher and it's just written off as a sad footnote, really.

The Universal Credit scheme is a farce and has absolutely destroyed the poorest class.

Yes Shaun
well put.

Yeah pretty much.

They’ll pass it off as basic depression related suicides and completely ignore the links to money troubles caused through their barbaric schemes

Disgusting, there definitely needs to be better support out there for people with mental health issues. The UC process should also be streamlined with waiting times slashed, and things in place for those who have difficulties in applying.

They want them to die.. That's the point, there's no other explanation.

I think it would be interesting to see some of our politicians trying to live on benefits for a few months and see how they cope.

...yeah this exactly...the whole thing of the benefit system is to help the lowest incomes but food banks are still becoming more and more used..it really has been and is a system that should hang its head in shame because it’s taken the ‘very worse times’ for people and made them very much worse...

Tom4784 09-02-2020 12:23 PM

Universal credit is a predatory system but it's a system that targets the poor and vulnerable whom the right wing likes to demonise for votes so who cares whether those 'undesirables' kill themselves or starve to death in their own homes, amirite? The only benefit they have to the right is to tear the working class apart by getting people in work to look down and despise those who aren't.

Universal credit is a boot to the head of the unemployed to 'keep them in their place'. The system doesn't really work to get people into jobs, it seeks only to withold benefits claimants are entitled to by subjecting them to increasingly ridiculous and cruel standards.

That's a lot of deaths, they really need to rethink this credit, very few people will have savings to last them 6 weeks and if they do they probably wont get it anyway?

user104658 09-02-2020 01:00 PM

The most ridiculous part of this story is the claim that it's only 69 deaths in 6 years. There are DEFINITELY considerably more deaths that can be linked to UC, whether that's through direct suicide, drug deaths, or simply people being unable to care for themselves properly.

My life has improved in countless ways over the last decade, but one of the things I am MOST thankful for is no longer being reliant on wage top ups to survive... Because the UC system is abysmal, and it targets working families on low income as much as the unemployed.

And if they do, they'll have to deal with a system that will look for any reason to deprive them of the benefits they are owed.

People who go on about 'scroungers' should count themselves lucky to be so ignorant of the system because anyone who thinks you can create a tidy little life on benefits have never been beholden to the system.
