Is a TV Show good if it's popular?

Basically I saw an argument breakout on YouTube between a fan of TLOU TV Series and a hater of the TLOU.

And basically the fan used ratings to justify the quality of the Show, whilst the hater (and I mean he hated it) was using things like the pacing and dialogue against the Show, and I secretly suspect that he didn't like the Homosexuality elements either, but tbf that's speculation on my part.

But in general do you think that good ratings either commercially or critically means that a TV Show is good or do you think it's always subjective?

Personally I always think it's subjective, I mean me and my Mom for example have had a massive debate out of what's better between Demon Slayer's Entertainment District Arc or Only Murders In The Building (because we've been watching them at the same time) and neither of us are factually correct imo, I may be very vocal and arguably even a bit forceful with my opinions (something I actually need to work on) but deep down it's always going to come down to personal taste.

For example someone for some reason could think that FBI: International is a 10/10, and they're entitled to that wrong opinion.:hehe:

But seriously I personally don't like the argument that Shows are factually good or bad, I think that obviously every Show has their appealing and unappealing aspects, but ultimately it's down to personal taste on if you like the overall package of the Show.

Sorry for rambling on I had a lot to get off my chest.

And just to clarify I haven't watched TLOU yet, but I did like the first Game.

I don’t think a show is good just because it’s popular .. just look at Deal or No Deal , Fools and Horses , Father Ted … etc etc

Or Love Island, Strictly come dancing or Eastenders. They're popular and truley awful.

It's obviously subjective. What does "good" even mean? probably different things to different people but imo when it comes to TV Shows you either enjoy it or you don't, that's really all that matters? If I don't like a TV Show or a Film saying it has a high rating on IMDb isn't going to suddenly make me like it and vice versa

Some of the popular shows out there I can't get into .

No, take Love Island for example, a very popular show, but it’s the actual embodiment of trash

The attraction of Love Island and Big Brother are kinda hard to explain .. If you don’t invest enough time in them and that means watching more or less every episode/ interaction then they are probably unwatchable but when you follow all the interactions / relationships developing / failing then they become fascinating … some of us are people watchers

Also someone just tuning in for one episode simply wouldn’t pick up on Jessie or Olivia being fake or devious or inconsistent.. or someone in a steady couple flirting with someone else .
