Christmas movies that aren't really Christmas movies but remind you of Christmas....

...because they're always on telly around Christmas time?

(sorry for the longest thread title ever)

For me, Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Both with the excellent John Candy. I always thought Planes, Trains and Automobiles was a Christmas movie but i was online gaming with one of my American mates the other day, and she was like "you dumbass, it's a Thanksgiving movie" And it is, it just has such a Christmasy feel though.

…yeah for sure Planes, Trains and Automobiles…and it’s one that’s often billed as a Christmas/festive movie as well …I watched it not too long ago and I might watch Uncle Buck sometimes soon as well…John Candy…..such a very likeable actor…

That film holds some precious memories for me. Still have the VHS of that (i know you know i have tons of VHS  but a lot i never kept unless they were ex rentals, or special to me (as 95% of VHS are worthless), Jumanji is special to me).

Matilda is one on often around Christmas time too.

Funnily enough, i was gonna put my fave "horror" (not really a horror) Christmas movie in the Advent thingy, and Gremilns is it. Set around Christmas, but not really a Christmas movie.

Or Silent Night, Deadly Night. Which is a brutal Christmas movie. It actually makes me feel quite uneasy watching. I watched it for the 3rd time, first time in years, the other day, and i was like "yeah, this might be a Christmas movie, but it's in no way a fun watch for a horror movie, or otherwise"

Kinda like Trancers, which is my ultimate favourite B-Movie of all time, it's set around Christmas, has it's Christmasy moments, but doesn't at all feel like a Christmas film though. It's a fun little watch though

The 1940s Flash Gordon series

Each year at Christmas in the last week as we could bring in games to play coz the lazy teachers went to the pub they wheeled in the big TV and we could watch Laurel and Hardy and Flash Gordon all day

Brewster's Millions has Christmasy vibes too, though they don't show it around Christmas as much now. Another John Candy classic. John Candy could literally be Santa Claus, all these films he's in that that remind us of Christmas, and give the man the white beard, you'd think he was Santa himself. Jolly, fun, sweet and completely inoffensive

Die Hard. Not really a Christmas movie, but it reminds me of Christmas

Sound of Music is aired at Christmas a lot. I once worked on the stageshow during Christmas time (Nov-Jan), so it encompassed a lot of the run up to, and hangover from, that Christmas.

E.T. was on council telly around Christmas every year in the early 90's when I was a kid, and thus always feels like a Christmas movie to me. We didn't have Sky, we was middle-class-poor like Rishi Sunak.

there is now a ''Bake Off'' style show in the world of Harry Potter on HBO Max

Wizards of Baking

where they have to recreate all sorts of things from those movies, but then as cakes, pies, cookies, macarons

Ammi 26-12-2024 05:30 AM

…the Indiana Jones movies also because they’re often on at Christmas time, or used to be…also Back to the Future…also The Goonies and Princess Bride, I might have said that one already…I think it’s because they’re all great family movies and Christmas time is a big time of family movie watching….

That sounds good Nicky. I think our Ness would enjoy that too, she likes cooking shows.

the lord of the rings trilogy. Each film was released in the cinema on Christmas week for 3 years on the trot

Titanic was a regular christmas movie for years

Many are probably too young to remember but the St Trinians movies always made a regular appearance at Christmas
