Breast screening (how the years fly!)

So I'm due for breast screening next Wednesday, it's flown by since my last check up. Extremely important. I would say to anyone, if you're invited for any cancer screening whatsoever, don't hesitate. Could be a lifesaver.

Best of luck, Kate.

I have mine on Monday, it doesn't seem like 3 years but I guess it is

Jessica. 30-01-2025 01:44 PM

It's so important to go to all your screenings, I completely agree.

I always assumed they were yearly. Learn something new everyday.

If there has been a history in the family or if you have previously had breast cancer it is yearly

I still have another year or so till I get invited - wish they did it earlier though. I have just lost one of my best friends to breast cancer, my Nan had it and my mum died of cancer (not breast) and so I would prefer to be able to be tested for everything to put my mind at rest.

I'm not sure on this Annie but I think you can request it? I'll research it.

Kate! 30-01-2025 03:51 PM

@AnnieK

Google says......

Yes, you can request a breast screening if you believe you should have one, even if you are not automatically invited; you can contact your GP or your local breast screening service to ask for an appointment.

AnnieK 30-01-2025 03:52 PM

You can only request it if you have a close family link with breast cancer (has to be mum or sibling - nan is too distant). You can request one if you haven't been invited by the time you are 53 (which is years away for me).

Ah, I see. OK then. They should perhaps rethink it and lower the age range?

Vanessa 30-01-2025 03:57 PM

Never had one. I'm going to be 52 this year.

If you haven't been invited by your 53rd birthday you can request it

Just going off what Annie said above. X

AnnieK 30-01-2025 05:03 PM

The NHS website says.....
When you'll be invited
You'll automatically get your first invite for breast screening between the ages of 50 and 53. Then you'll be invited every 3 years until you turn 71.

If you have not been sent a letter
If you have not been invited for breast screening by the time you are 53 and think you should have been, contact your local breast screening service.

That must have changed, I was called not long after I turned 49 so I suppose in my 50th year and my friend was the same she had her first mammogram done at 49, think covid has moved the goalposts here, pretty sure it was always 50

Yeah probably covid backlog.

I am sure most of my older friends were called at 50 too.
