I was in the same position as you, desperate to save videos from youtube and unable to, anyway a mate I know who's a wizard on computers and helps me loads sorted it for me and now I can save them but I save them as FLV files as I was told that the quality is better keeping them that way.

I just went with the flow and accepted his evulation:laugh:

Firstly http://www.wimpyplayer.com/

I downloaded the above player

Secondly http://keepvid.com/

Add the youtube link to the box on that page and when it's copied to your computer, you can then play the FLV file through the Wimpy player. I can't help you anymore tonight, but if nobody here can help you, I shall give you step to step instructions in a couple of days when I see my mate.

I could do with that:rolleyes:

Just clicked on that. I guess it's pretty much the same as Wimpy player right:puzzled: are FLV files better staying that way, rather than trying to convert them?

My problem is that I need the files in mpeg, .avi or wmv for use with Windows Movie maker as I make a number of multimedia presentations. The KeepVid sites sells software, which is not cheap, and it looks like the player may be one you eventually have to pay to register.

So an alternate method to save YouTube files in that format would be appreciated.

If you download the Wimpy player, you won't need to view the videos on Window movie maker at all. There are ways of converting the FVL files to MPEG or other, sorry that I can't help you with that. But I know that the quality will be reduced if those files get changed from FVL to MPEG

That's the one I use, which ALWAYS works for me...because it sends you the file in an email five minutes later. Whereas the others do it instantly, which means the sites have lots of downtime due to busy servers and won't work.

As far as im aware it lets you pick the file type, so that'd be the best choice for you sticks.

I have had partial success with ZamZar, but not all the youtube video I ordered seem to have been done, so trying the vixynet

Sticks 15-10-2007 09:12 PM

Addendum - If you use Vixy.net, then before you can use the avi file created, you need to use Windows Movie maker to create a wmv file. Then you can edit the wmv file into other films in process.

The other videos from zamzar finally showed up, but in the future I may just use vixy.net, I just have to remember to convert them to wmv files before working with them.
