He was not using his daighter for anything. He loves her with all his heart, Im thinking he is a good dad, a daughter wouldnt send a bad dad a card saying that they loved them, and his ex seemed to agree to the fact of Mia sending Stu the letter.

I think he is genuine but fair play to Wendy for sticking to her guns even though he was there
